Description
Once Upon A Time in a land before digital there was a photographer in Hollywood who dreamed of a world where his images could be layered together; the combination of two or more of them creating an entirely new image filled with fantasy, sensuality and a dream-like wonder. So he went to his darkroom where he taped two negatives together and printed them onto a sheet of paper which he then dipped in developer, stopper and fixer. Oh yes, and he finished it all off in a bath of toner that would have made the image look sepia had he not left it in there for the better part of a half hour. So without further ado, although you know I'm perfectly capable of further ado, I give you the beauty of film and a darkroom long before photoshop was even a synaptical spark in somebody's brain.Related content

It is kinda weird, isn't it. Something about it works but I have no idea what.

Thanks Heather. I really don't think it could be done quite like this in Photoshop. The two negatives naturally canceled portions of each other out like this. I did nothing other than to place the two negatives one ontop of the other and then print. That was the sum total of the manipulation. I really would like to go back to more of this kind of work now that I have all of my negatives and transparencies with me again. But it's a lot of time and work so it'll have to wait awhile.

Thanks Claire. I was looking at this closely this week and realizing that this same effect would be very difficult to achieve in photoshop. This is the very simple sandwiching of two negatives together. One portion of the neg will cancel out another in a way that I've never seen done in photoshop. I use a lot of blending with my textures but I kept looking at this and thinking that I probably wouldn't be able to do it in PS. I worked on images like this for years and years before computers even came along. I had no concept anywhere in my consciousness of digital or computers or anything in that realm. These sandwiched images existed in a world of their own for me. I'm hoping to be able to effectively scan more of them as I have time. It's not that I think they're such great works of art but rather that they represent the beginning of much of the artwork I'm doing now.
