*Blares trumpets in the distance* THE LONG AWAITED RETURN!!
A big kiitos paljon to everyone who has read, commented, and encouraged me on this project! I've learned so much while making, it, about Finland, about history, about making comics in general! I'm happy I finally get to draw Finland in his winter war uniform, I've had enough of his sweater vest, heheh.
As you can see, I've tried to stay true to the style of the previous comics, though now I'm inking with pens instead of brushes so it a) looks neater and b) is less messy! I think I've improved a lot since the first comics, hope it's noticeable in the newer ones! I'm excited because now we're finally past all this prologuey political context stuff and can move on to the action of the event.
On to the History part!
I have to lol so hard at whoever thought telling the Finns "We're not bombing you we're dropping bread on your poor starving people!" was a good idea, because NOBODY was fooled. Finns in the countryside began sarcastically calling the bomber planes "Molotov's Breadbaskets", after Soviet Minister of Foreign affairs Vyacheslav Molotov. Also frustrating was that the Soviet Union at the beginning was still trying to excuse the invasion with a false accusation of "you guys attacked us first, so now our non-aggression treaty is null."
Also pretty much the rest of the world supported Finland verbally, and denounced the actions of the Red Army. Although there were a bunch of volunteers from around Europe who helped fight, and some places helped sell weapons and stuff–more on that later
as for the "good news and bad news" part for the battle of Terijoki. Good News: They did hold up really well and caused the Red Army a lot of trouble and delayed their invasion schedule as well, by basically barricading and booby trapping the entire town with mines, bombs, and a few strategically hidden snipers that made it seem like the Finnish force was bigger than it actually was. Bad News: The Finnish force encountered tanks for the first time! Heavy armored vehicles, while they would prove to be pretty impractical in the long run, were still pretty formidable weapons that the Red Army had a lot of. Hence Timo's freaked out face at the last page there.
Also: if you haven't read the previous comics, guess what Stalin wanted for his birthday :]
This is all done on my own research and reading, through various websites, history forums, and the book The Winter War: Russia's Invasion of Finland 1939-1930 by Robert Edwards. As usual, if anyone has anything to comment on, correct, add context to, please tell me! This whole project is a learning experience for me as well.
Moi moi!

I'm so sad this was discontinued. I loved this. But I understand getting busy, story of my life right now. But I enjoyed the first three chapters, so that makes me happy! Now back to my own presentation...

Thank you!! I'm sorry that I couldn't continue it!! Once it got into actual military/tactical stuff instead of the juicy political drama i kind of lost interest, and also tanks were hard to draw XD
Your presentation sounds super neat! Actually, to help fill the gaping hole left by the discontinuation of this comic, i suggest you check out a few of the extras in my gallery, as well as this fun Research Video I made on the Finnish Winter War as an independent project at school!!! It's funny because at the Research Week event, the moderator asked me "what was your inspiration for this project" and I smiled very wide and tried very hard not to say "I was kind of obsessed with Hetalia in high school and read something interesting in an old WWII photobook which led me to become obsessed with the Finnish Winter War for a bit" in front of all the professors and academic types out there XD . I also have a blog , which was originally started to host the comic when i moved to Tumblr but mostly turned into a way for me to store reference images for the comic. Also there area few other historical/hetalia comics i've made, one on the Russian Revolution and one on American History different content but a kind of similar style!
Thank you once again!! I'm still sad that this wasn't able to be as long as I would have liked it, but I've been super grateful for all the fascinating people I've met through both this fandom and through doing research.

Hahaha well considering I can't even draw except a pony or two, I can sympathize. No I really did enjoy your series and thanks for sending me onto your other projects! When I have a bit more time I'll try to check them out more thoroughly. Also wanted to say I read some of the comments on your video and ignore some of those harsher ones- you need to be given credit for the fact you were researching an entire subject OUTSIDE of the US and its hard for us to get our sources 100% accurate, so kudos for tackling such a tough project! I was impressed.
While I gave my speech last night, in my mind when I got to the Winter War I visualized your comic to help me calm down and recite the facts better. So take that to heart, it helped this girl with her first speech ever!

Ah take your time! I'm really glad that you appreciate it. Ahah yeah the video comments have been pretty vexing but aside from slightly changing the date I've resolved to leave them for now X0 I do have sources but as far as youtube comments go i feel like it's better to just leave them for now before getting dragged into an internet cesspool haha.
Wow!! I'm so glad that the comic was able to help you out with your speech, it pleases me to know that it's being helpful in Real Life™ situations I took a communications/speech class last year and yeah speeches can be nerve wracking, even short ones, and I'm glad that you got through it! So was it specifically on WWII history?

Bringing the artwork to mind just made the situation easier, I could remember Finny's face and Russia's smug one and that just made relating that specific part so much easier.
Actually I was asked to present a speech on the Nordic Five countries to the "Sons of Norway" group. I chanced a meeting with the directors at my work and didn't realize who they were, and noted the man was wearing a lutefisk shirt and started to talk Norwegian history with them. If I had known they were the directors I wouldn't have said a word, but after I explained why the Norwegian language has two versions they got my contact information and invited me to speak to the group. It was such an honor and very, very fun, though I couldn't eat anything 'cause I was nervous. XD I spent most of the speech going over the history of all five countries in general but I gave Finland a large share of the time because I wanted to explain how awesome they were.

Wow that's such a cool encounter!! It's really interesting, the sort of people you run into randomly, haha, and wow a real honor I'm sure! I'm glad that you were able to meet such cool people and give a speech, especially about Finland! The relations between the nations are very fascinating im sure

Just a tank?!?!? That is a soviet 3 turreted T-28 tank, armed with 76.2mm cannon, fear is understandable in this context. (RUSSIAN BIAS INTENSIFIES) Actually though i respect the Finns as magnificent marksmen

tomato-bird In reply to Sesshomaru56 [2015-05-21 06:19:36 +0000 UTC]
indeed it is!! most of the Finnish troops had yet to *actually* encounter a tank like this before, so most of its effects were in fact fear based...
...And then they realized that tanks are absolutely HORRIBLE for trying to navitate through wintery forests and in the landscape of the country known as "Land of a Thousand Lakes"

Is this the end of the series?
It's really awesome and interesting! I've learnt about a war that I didn't know existed, and the way you portray the characters is spot-on!

haha i discontinued it due to the fact that I'd kind of bitten off more than I could chew XD I'm sorry! I might pick it up again in the future buut probably not, I've learned a lot from making this but I feel like I need to move on stylistically and in subject matter though. I've learned that tANKS ARe VERY HARD TO DRAW and I'm a lot better at explaining the political reasons behind the actual war than the nitty-gritty parts of warfare itself XD It will always be close to my heart, however! and I'm glad you've enjoyed it and were able to learn from it
I've done other, shorter Historical Hetalia comics as well, if you'd like to check them out too!
Il Monumento (Italy)
Me and the Big Changes (Russia)
My Country 'Tis of Thee (America) (it was too long for DeviantArt haha)

At least Finland looks manly...
I say it because sometimes Hidekaz can't be accurate at all. (and the nordics are so rude and manly)
Greetings from Mexico.

That was awesome!!
I love how your comic is so accurate and still so funny. In here I did not see anything to correct. At least with my school knowing about winter war. I really enjoy that someone makes this based on real events and using history books. It really makes story so much interesting. And history is sometimes funny (darkly but still). I really love to see all countries commenting about Finland's position and even more Finland's reaction for them. Rarely sees Finland so manly. And Finland's face in the last picture. (Oh god we are in deep s**t now)
Your drawing skills truly are improved and I like this new style of yours.
Sorry to make so long comment but I am just so excited!!
Keep up your amazing job! Can't wait next one. Hopefully we get some drinks with Molotov's breadbaskets.

Thanks so much! Yup, we'll get some drinks to go with those breadbaskets soon! I'm so glad you like it, I try to be as accurate as I can, even though sometimes it feels like I'm flooded with all this information.
I tried to Balance Finland's cutesy, sweet and polite personality (canon) with his tougher side, I'm glad it worked out pretty well! And no problem, I love long comments, it makes me happy that people react to NiHFO and let me know the feedback.
