Hi there, I'm Katherine, I'm an aspiring Concept Artist, I know I have a long way to go before I become anything like you, and I'm working hard on it, but I wanted to ask... How did you get to where you are now? Do you work for an animating studio and what part of the animation department do you work in if so? Sorry for the bombard of questions, I just find your illustrations as such an inspiration and they're so beautifully done. You have this steady flow of style that so nice and consistent in all of your art, I could go on for ages about how brilliant your work is hehe
Hope I can some day get to where you are, life long dream

Thank you. I worked at Disney Feature Animation for about 11 years as an animator. Β I already had a cartoony style before that, but really adapted to a Disney style for a long while. Β I still have it in me, but I'm also influenced by comic books and comic strips. Β

I can see you're influenced through comics and it's BRILLIANT! Haha! So did Disney teach you along the way of you working with them bits and pieces of their style, or was it a gradual pick up self teaching thing with them. because I've been analysing the many different styles they've featured in many of their illustrations and films, what they do is very vast (in terms of style that is). I noticed as well that with the style of Sleeping Beauty, if I'm not wrong it's inspired of the old paintings of medieval Europe, due to Sleeping beauty being set in that era. Quite brilliant how they have these small hidden details, that sadly not too many people pay attention to.
How did you apply to Disney any way, and were you at any point tempted to work for Stan Lee and his comics? But then again Disney's bought out Marvel now so i suppose it's pretty much apart of the same thing now, same with Star Wars and Lucas Films
Sorry for the amount of bombarded questions. I'm just really curious, because I've wanted since I was 13 to work for Disney at some point in my life, I've never taken any art classes or anything but I've always been drawing since i can remember, and from what i can see getting better and improving bit by bit. My latest art work was one on Disney's latest film Frozen.
Once again sorry for the bombardment of questions. I just really love your art!

Hey Katherine, I can't answer all your questions since it would mean me writing my whole bio , but I've always liked different cartooning styles so adapting to the Disney style was already up my alley, I guess. Β It's become a part of my style, for sure, but I don't see it as much as others do. Β I got into Disney through an internship program WAAAAAY back when. Β Its still a good way to get in, but even harder to do these days. Β All submissions are via their website these days. Β I did some comic book work through the years also, but not for Marvel. Β I created my own comic series (only four issues) and also did comics for Disney Comics and Disney Adventures magazine (both gone now). Β

There is a new book out concerning Walt Disney's early years; the cover photo has him at his animation desk, as you are here. The similarity surprises me. You're in good company, to be sure.

It's so cool and this make me so happy when I see professional animators work and their projects and I'll also see the awesome workspace.
I love to see an animator bringing a character to life and the character also gets the awesome personality. I just LOVE it!
Tom - Thank you so much and thank you to the other people (also legendary people) to bring characters to life in all these years and still doing it.

I took a light board, glued a plastic peg strip on it, and called it an animation table. Mostly, I use it to clean up my own roughs, which is pretty effective in its own right.
So, which character are you animating in this shot?

It's a really nice photo Tom.Β
How much I wish I had a desk like that. To think that such furniture carries years of animation legacy. How much I wish I could have been a real disney animator. So that I may have carried on that legacy. Why must the public's fickle taste in media lead to the death of dreams. (sigh) Take care.
P.S. - I really hope your brother finishes my portrait soon.

He's good for his word. Β Busy maybe, but he will do it. Β Hey, I ALMOST used that commissioned art I did for you of my at my art desk with Mushu as a cover image for a new book! Β It didn't work out (because the publisher didn't want to have to get the rights to use Mushu) but it was there for one version! Β
