If I understand the comics correctly, that was when it was first discovered with Elie and her husband Finn was now setting out to find a cure with Benedict, and it's been getting out of control ever since.

That I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine, as it's bbmbbf's storyline. Not sure what the outcome or ending will be, but his comic definitely has me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen in the end to everyone. I'm hoping it's a good ending and everything is okay.
But as of Chapter 10, bbmbbf has jumped ahead into the future and we're seeing what's happened so far without something in place to stop it.
