While most of the Train would be blocked by Homes and Foliage, i would get lucky with the Train’s Theater Car #994009 which was sitting short of the Greenwood Street Grade Crossing. This unique looking piece of equipment was originally constructed by Pullman in 1954 as a Diner. It began its career for the Canadian National as their #428 and saw service on many of their named Trains like the Super Continental between Montreal, Quebec and Vancouver, British Columbia, the Ocean Limited and Scotian. Both of which ran from Montreal to Halifax, Nova Scotia. It also functioned as a secondary meal car on routes like the Maple Leaf between Chicago, Illinois and Toronto, Ontario. The car would be inherited by VIA Rail upon its creation in 1977 and served the carrier for a few years afterwards. In 1982 Conrail acquired the car and had it rebuilt into its current Theater Car Configuration at their Reading, Pennsylvania Shops. The rebuild involved cutting out the rear of the car and installing a large glass panel ahead of two rows of stacked seats which face outward for riders to get a glimpse of the territory they are exiting. Under Conrail it served as Car #9 and wore a Brunswick Green Livery. Upon Conrail’s split between Norfolk Southern and CSX in 1999, the car was ultimately sent to CSX for their own Office Car Train. Under CSX the car was initially named the “Alabama” and repainted into a Dark Blue Scheme similar to YN3. In Spring of 2021 the car would be repainted into the current B&O Scheme. It has since been renamed the “W. Thomas Rice” who was the president of the Atlantic Coast Line from 1957 until its 1967 merger with the Seaboard Air Line. Afterwards he would serve as the first president of the newly created Seaboard Coast Line and rose to become the chairman of the Family Lines System in the 1980s. He would also ultimately help guide the merger of the Seaboard System and Chessie System which created CSX as we known it today in 1986.
