Description
Thorin Oakenshield as portrayed by Richard Armitage in Jackson's movie "The Hobbit". Black ink and bloody grid.I made this some months ago (on January 2013 prolly) and just found it while I was putting old books on my brand new IKEA bookcase. x) People told me that the best way to draw portraits was to use a grid to make sure proportions were respected. I shouted "NO that's cheating! I prefer doing bad portraits than doing great portraits thanks to cheats". But finally I tried it just to see if it works. And damn, indeed it's well proportionned, for once.
But still it's CHEATING. >< I won't use that technique again... Plus, there's no fun drawing if you have to count squares and so on....

I hate this method as well. My high school art teacher was a heavy advocate of this square technique, and I despised it. After a while I realized how much of a cheat it was in a sense, and also how much fun it took away from the act of drawing. I am used to drawing portraits and stuff like that, so I quit using it after my first art class and never looked back.

No art teacher told me about this technique (well, I had only one art teacher and he didn't teach us any technique apart from the torn paper collages), but apparently some people on DA use it, they told me about it. They do as they want, but... I see no fun in counting squares, personaly. x) As long you find your own techniques that you really like, I think it's good you quit that technique.

Yeah, I would rather have an average piece of art that I did free hand than a magnificent one that was drawn using squares.

Well, I don't really count that as cheating. I count it as an artist's help. If that was hard to understand, I'll just put it this way: It is a very lovely photo "Cheating" or not

Hehe! x) Well, I don't count that as a drawing technique, so for me it's kinda cheating. And I don't draw to count squares, eh! >< But thank you very much.

x) Thanks, but as you said indeed, I'll use my own techniques... I prefer frankness and spontaneity rather than all the tricks in the world.
