Legoshi hummed to himself as he finished drying off the evening washing up, putting them back in their proper place carefully and neatly, ready for the next day.

Drying his hands he left the kitchen and made his way upstairs. It had been a long day and he was ready for bed.

He was just passing the bathroom when his ears pricked up to the sound of a slight whimpering.

Legoshi pressed his ear against the door and listened. He could hear the sound of the shower and just behind that he picked up the sound of low sobbing.

He stood there for a moment breathing in and out slowly. He was hesitant to deal with the animal he knew was on the other side.

The sobbing stopped for a moment but started up again sounding even more broken and pathetic then before.

The wolf let out a fatigued sigh and opened the door.

It wasn’t a big bathroom and was on plain side having little more than a toilet, sink and shower. His eyes were drawn to the shower or rather to the weeping bear curled up at the bottom of it.

Riz, his one time enemy and now, due to unexpected twists in one’s life, his house mate.

It had been nine years since Riz had been sentenced to prison for the murduer of his and Legoshi’s fellow classmate, Tem. He had served seven and then been released on good behaviour. He had been living on the streets for a while before he had run into Legoshi.

For some reason that the male wolf still couldn’t fathom, he had offered Riz a place to stay. He guessed it was because deep down he still felt responsible for Riz. The bear had reluctantly yet gratefully taken him up on the offer.

Things had been awkward and tense for a while. Riz for his part had tried his best. Cooking for them both and always trying to be polite to the other carnivore. Riz had't seemed happy but more at peace. Legoshi now saw that the bear might have just been hiding his true feelings. He was particularly good at that.

Legoshi made his way over to the crying bear and sat down. With the shower still on it didn’t take long before his clothes were soaking but he didn’t really care.

Awkwardly he placed a hand on Riz’s shoulder, ignoring the small jump the bear gave.

“Hey Riz, how are we doing?”

Riz gave a choked sob then replied, “Not so good today Legoshi.”

“You want to talk about it?”

“No. No, I don’t think I do. I just want to be alone.”

“I doubt that. If you did, you would have told me to get out of the room. I think you're just ashamed to be seen looking vulnerable. You don’t have to be. I won’t judge.”

Leghosi kept quiet about the fact that the bear was completely naked. Legoshi had seen

other males in the nude before but that still didn’t stop him from being uncomfortable.

Riz was quiet for a while before he spoke.

“I try to push all the bad memories and pains down inside of me where they won’t hurt anymore. It doesn’t really work so I just try and hide it. Sometimes I don’t have the strength for even that. Like tonight.”

The wolf nodded. “I understand. Even after all these years what happened to Tem still haunts you.”

“Y..yes but it wasn’t just about what I did to Tem. I hurt so many people. Tem and his family, my family, you, Pina, our classmates in school. Everyone.”

“What about you? I know you are hurting too.” Legoshi interjected.

The bear laughed bitterly. “What does that matter? I was the monster who tore our school apart and destroyed Tem. Anything that happened to me was well deserved.”

Riz pulled his legs closer to himself and began to cry again.

Legoshi was unsure what to say to that so he just sat there and began to rub the other carnivore’s back comfortingly.

“Legoshi?”

“Yes?”

“You do believe I deserved what I got don’t you?”

The wolf shifted slightly and thought for a moment before answering somewhat uncomfortably “I know you were sick and delusional but I don’t think you wanted to be evil. Not like some of the other people I've met. Still you did some terrible things Riz. You had to answer for them. Yes I think you deserted jail…but not everything else”

Riz’s ears pricked up at that.

Legoshi took a deep breath and then went on.

“I don’t think you deserved to be disowned by your parents or to be tormented and humiliated like you were.

“How did you…”

“ I know about the beatings and the way you were tortured and cut to pieces again and again.” the wolf said, cutting him off. “I know the guards would strip you and force your hands behind your back so you couldn’t even cover yourself.”

Riz was deadly silent. Legoshi went on.

“I errr..I also know about ox and the big tiger. How they tore every scrap of dignity away from you. How they used you for their stick amusement. How they… raped you.”

“How do you know about all that,” Riz asked in a hollow voice.

“Pina told me.”

Riz’s head snapped round, making the wolf recoil slightly. The look on the bear’s face was one of hurt and anger mixed with shame.

“Pina told you? Why the hell would he tell you something like that?”

“Don’t be mad at him. He thought I needed to know. He wasn’t trying to hurt you. He just wanted me to realise what you had been through. What the two of us put you through. I’m sorry I didn’t think it would get that bad.”

Riz swallowed then said that it was either the wolf or sheep’s fault. He did it to himself.

They were silent for a moment before Riz spoke again.

“I used to think I was so strong, so big. Being in prison, being used by others, that soon changed my mind. It was…humbling. It showed me that I wasn’t as strong as I thought I was. That I was weak and that I needed help.”

“I don't think that you’re weak,” Legoshi replied in a soft voice. “I wish I had gotten you some help, I really do. I want to help you now. I don’t mean just putting a roof over your head. I want to help you get better and to be there for you when things get hard. I guess maybe you’d call it being a friend. If you’d like that.”

Riz smiled slightly and told the wolf that he would like that more than anything.

“Well how’s about a deal then. I’ll try to be a friend and in return you stop beating yourself up. Leave the past in the best.”

The bear simply nodded his head, the smile on his face growing as he did.

Suddenly he jumped up and for the first time in a long time looked genuinely happy.

“I’ll make his work Legoshi I promise. For you and for Tem.You’ll see a new bear from now on.”

“I think I’ve seen more than enough bear actually,” Legoshi said with an awkward mutter.

Riz just looked confused.

“Riz you’re still naked remember. You're not a bad looking bear but I don’t need to see…all of you.”

Going a bit red Riz apologised and covered himself with a hand.

“S…sorry I got a little carried away. Oh and thank you…for everything.”

The wolf just smiled and said that he was happy to help and that next time he’d make sure it was when one of them wasn’t taking a shower.

Riz just laughed and wholeheartedly agreed.
