Description Magazine illustration. Once again, I used scratchboard on this one. I really like how easy it is to do more realistic images with it.

Very nice on the lighting; enough to get a sense of what's going on, but also enough to hide it

Hey, bud.

I used scratchboard on this one. Basically, the board starts off black, and you scratch away the white areas with a knife or scratch tool. It's a bit like drawing a negative, as you don't draw the black, but scratch it away to reveal the white.

No... Can't say I am as proud these days of the work.. When I was a freshman in high school I was elected to be apart of a prodigy college art program at Hartford Art School during the winter semester. I took fine art illustration and printmaking. It was in my print making class that I learned all the techniques. I gotta tell you though had I had the materials these days to produce the acid plate work I cetainly would. Acid plate is pretty much as close as you get to scratchboarding. You take a sheet of metal and paint over it with a black acid resistent material. Once it dries you scratch of the material that you want printed like a scratch board. you then drop it in an acid bath and depending on the time and types of acid you can get different depths and textures. Once your done with the bath you wash and bring it to the print press for printing.. Although it is certainly not something you want to screw up.. The acid will burn right through flesh..

It's a piece of cardstock that has a layer of white chalk with a layer of black ink over it. When you scrape away the ink, you reveal the white underneath. So, instead of laying down black (like I do with my traditional inks), I scrape away the black in the areas I want to be white. It takes a bit to get used to, but it's a lot of fun.

Thanks so much!

I hadn't used it since I was 9, so I was a bit worried that it wouldn't work out. Now that I've got two under my belt, I'll definitely be using it again.
