So Paul Donn is just relaxing, laying on his back, and playing with his feet when Jessica runs by, throws a squash at his head, and then stops a few yards away so she can stare at him. I'm not sure what he did to piss her off. He doesn't seem to know either.San Diego Zoo, CA

- zoo is suitable only for goats and buffalo. Bears, lions, tigers and especially gorillas, are very complex because of its captivity.

I agree that apes in particular show far too much intelligence for it to sit quite right to keep them in cages, but if it mitigates things at all, these gorillas were all bred in captivity from individuals confiscated from poachers. San Diego Zoo is actually well known for the quality of it's enclosures and focus on animal behavior and welfare. They are also involved in conservation of the gorilla's native habitat.
In the United States at least, zoos either breed in captivity or acquire animals that were confiscated from poachers or unable to survive in the wild. For some species, captive breeding is the only reason viable populations still exist.
