Doolin's Journey

Story:

Hooves echoed a report across hard stone. How many horses were moving, one could not tell, but they seemed to plod at a slow walk. As they came into view, it could be seen that their heads were low, and their bodies thin. Their rocky descent seemed to suck more life from them than a climb might, because they had to pace themselves as they made their way down through a narrow path, single file, through a canyon of which a trickle of water was present after the recent storm.
Doolin noticed, with amused surprise, that the foals he had accepted with the wonderful Anise were growing steadily larger. But, then again, they were not growing as much as they should, with the lack of food. They were slowly being weaned, which was a blessing for the emaciated mare, but that also meant the stallion must find all the more grass for the three. He blew a small sigh, and Anise nickered encouragement. She had it hardest of all, Doolin realized, since she had to sustain two foals. He had admiration for the mare, still keeping her peaceful, gracious demeanor regardless of circumstances. He, regretfully, thought of his own quick temper and harsh words in this time. He sighed once more, remembering how he had snapped so angrily at Bud...

---

Doolin, plodding between sagebrush, reflected upon the day before. The night of that storm, he had been at a breaking point, and Anise had truly pulled him out of the darkness. Although he walked with his head low, he felt a new energy rushing through him, and his eyes sparkled with a new light. As he walked however, Bud darted into his path, making him snap rudely out of his thoughts. His head shot up, and he reared, stepping wrong behind him and tumbling over. Bud snorted in exclamation; obviously this was not his intention.
Doolin exclaimed, "BUD!? You rascal! Can you not tell someone what you're doing before you dart so... so..." the stallion was almost seething with apparent anger as he rolled over in the sagebrush, and his words hit the little one hard.
Bud's eyes welled with tears, and he barely pushed out a reply, "I- I'm so sorry Mr. Doolin, I really didn't mean it! I uh... uh..." he sniffled quietly, turning back, "Never... mind."
Doolin, rising, was about to retort to the words of the colt, but he stopped dead. What was he doing, snapping like that at a child, when it was his own fault? He glanced over at the white mare, now standing next to him, and he realized with a start the look in her eyes. She wasn't angry... rather, so very tired and, somehow, knowing. She smiled at him in her quiet way, and motioned toward the now obviously upset colt. His sister, in true sibling fashion, was making fun of him for being a crybaby.
Doolin, although awkwardly, made his way over to Bud, smiling halfheartedly as he did so. The colt's nose was a little runny as he looked up. "I'm so sorry Bud," The stallion nickered softly, "I was hasty there, and I guess... I'm tired and hungry, which is no excuse, and I shouldn't have said that, but I hope... you'll understand?"
Bud, nodding slightly, pressed his small head to the stallion's chest, "Yeah, I get it. It's been hard for you and mom, not having enough food."
Doolin stepped back and nuzzled the colt softly before returning to the front of the line...

---

What a day that was, Doolin thought to himself; finding such a wonderful mare and her foals just randomly out and about like that. And they even wanted to help him too! He could hardly believe his fortune at their company, and as he plodded still onward, now finding himself emerging onto a barren plateau, wondered why they ever came with him.

The hot sun beat down on the herd as they moved onward, and they drooped with the heat of an unusual fall day. It would usually be around the time for snow there, out on the plain, but surprisingly that was not the case. Doolin lifted his weary head as he saw something in the distance. With a start, he realized it was green! He picked up the pace, not even looking back to see if the others were following. When he arrived, he found a small patch of mossy water fed by the trickle of an underground stream. He immediately opened his mouth and gulped down the slimy sustenance, and soon heard Anise and the foals doing the same.
The young stallion's head popped up, and with a snort, he asked Anise if she also heard a far-off nicker. She shook her head, mouth full of slimy moss. Doolin, after taking a few more bites, moved to the top of the hill, head raised and nostrils flared. He could have sworn he just heard someone...
