Description Been so busy creating my work portfolio, but I did run into some old stuff that's scrapworthy here. Cardboard models of swords done for an art class. As a final project we hadta write about the artistic history of a particular object. Here we see from left to right a raiper, a gladius, a macuahuitl, a katana, an iraqui protosword, a scimitar, a khepesh, and a bastard sword. It was a pain in the arse to find good photos of each one that were historically accurate and that included dimensions. All of these are life-size, 'cept for the khepesh which came out a little smaller than it should, and the macuahuitl, for which I could find _no_ decent pictures. Only crappy drawings done by eccentric codex painters and artistically impaired jesuit monks. Thus this is just an approximation.

That is really cool. You are a cardboard weaponsmith! FWI a macuahuitl is about 3-4 feet in length, so I think you got the dimensions right.

Thanks! I wish I had found a better material than cardboard, though.

Hey, we all work with what we have (I have NO artwork posted right now because my computer is bipolar). You did a great job. Can't even tell it's cardboard!

That's a pretty good idea. Never thought of that before.

The rapier's a bit of a stretch, but they are near impossible to replicate. That's why I never made one. The macana (third from left) is fantastic, as is the shamshir (sixth from left). Man I wish I could do that with cardboard.

I imagine the guard would be nearly impossible, yeah. Hmm... maybe if you used one of those woody gourds like they use to make maracas, and just carve out the shape... Just a suggestion.

Wicked awesome. I make all my swords out of wood, with clay guards and pommels. If you get good enough wood, it paints very well.

I was a little pressed for time with this project, but doing wooden swords would have been great!

Heheh! I did make a sweet pair of sai for my cousin out of polystyrene sheet, pinewood and PVC tubing. The prongs were shaped like wings. Lotsa work. Lotsa fun! Damn, I need to get a picture of them up here.

Man, I'd love to be able to do costumes, too. In fact, I just heard that they're giving govermnent-sponsored tailoring classes in a nearby school. I might check it out.

Well, I've been wanting to have them since forever, but always they've been a) expensive, and b) on the other side of town. This is a dream come true. Or would be, if I had any money.

Oh, and what are you complaining about? You're already a kickass seamstress!

And I know tailor is a more accurate (and flattering) term, but 'seamstress' just sounds so much cuter to mine batears. More kickass, too. Like... "Mistress of the Seam!"

Great work, are they 3d or just flat?

Just flat. Still lots of fun to 'wield'. Wish I could think of a substitute that's stiffer, but not brittle, and that takes paint well. If I were to do them again, I would cut the cardboard to add strips of wood to them, and stiffen them. Hmm... maybe I can still do that.

Well I'm studying electronics so my knownledge of materials is not to great.
Anyhow if you search for something stiff, you might want to try the material printed boards are made out. The cheap material takes paint rather well. It's like hard cardboard. Plus as an added bonus you can get coper traces on them.

If you are searching for a flexible material that won't break, take thin disks of silicon. It might be a bit hard to get them and you probably can't really paint them. But they are extemely flexible.
