Description Once again, I must apologize.
This turned out much creepier then originally intended.

It's either the eyes...or the mouth....or both.
LOL...1920's Pinkie Pie.

XD

Was going for a Fleischer look...don't know if I pulled it off or not...
^_^;;;;

I was thinking about this creepy rotoscoped scene from the Betty Boop cartoon: "Snow White" ---> [link]

(might explain a few things.....lol...)

EDIT- Fixed the eyes so that they don't look so "soulless" thanks to everyone for the suggestions!
^_^

do you do commissions? I'd love to see a few OC's of mine done in this style

Unfortunately, I am not doing commissions at this time (although, I am flattered that you asked!)

alright. Still love to see some of my OC's in a style like this. Kinda reminds me of Timeless River, my favorite level of Kingdom Hearts 2

To fix the eyes so they don't look creepy, I suggest putting a triangle indent on each pupil like here:
[link]

It give the impression of light reflecting on the pupil and not empty holes.

I could give it a whirl...although I've seen cartoon eyes from the 1920's styled both ways. [link] [link]

I think you pulled it off! I recognized the style as soon as I saw it.

The eyes and mouth do make her look pretty freaky though... maybe a little triangle slit in the upper right corner of the eye would make it look better?

Toonfreak In reply to CheruCheriPie [2011-09-29 00:08:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes....you're the second person to suggest it!
I'm going to try it to see if it makes the piece any better (if it does, I'll upload it).

Really weird, but I like it!

Somehow, I think her legs are too solid though. Maybe some rubber hose? XD

Toonfreak In reply to Riatsila [2011-09-28 22:12:49 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately, I would have to completely re-draw her to get that effect....
-.-;;;

Riatsila In reply to Toonfreak [2011-09-28 22:42:31 +0000 UTC]

I know I was joking around anyway. Just the thought of reducing the trademark MLP thick legs into rubber hoses amused me XD

Toonfreak In reply to Riatsila [2011-09-29 00:02:01 +0000 UTC]

Their legs are already kind of rubber-hose-like though....so are the arms and legs for the Adventure Time and Regular Show crew.

They have very bendable skeletal structures.....

XD

Riatsila In reply to Toonfreak [2011-09-29 20:08:23 +0000 UTC]

I suppose so, just a lot thicker, but you're right, all three shows do have...questionable skeletons. XD
Just seems interesting to me how with these newer cartoons we've basically circled back around to a modernized version of the style used 100 years ago. Then again, I guess it's also a matter of having the entirety of animation history to look upon as inspiration.

Toonfreak In reply to Riatsila [2011-09-29 20:23:09 +0000 UTC]

I'm not surprised the cartoon style has looped around...animation trends are like popular trends.
We went through another "thick line" animation craze in the late 1990's like they had in the 1950's (such as PPG, My Life as a Teenage Robot, etc.).
Foster's Home For imaginary Friend's line-less style, slightly resembles the artwork of Disney-famous Mary Blair--> [link]

Animation styles tend to recycle in droves....kind of like a few years ago when ying yangs, peace signs, and smiley faces came back into style.

^_^

Riatsila In reply to Toonfreak [2011-09-29 20:56:44 +0000 UTC]

Not surprised either, just amused at the particular turn it took this time
*Nodnod* I rather enjoyed the 50's fad. :3 *Misses PPG* XD
*Looks* Yeah, I guess it does at that.

I guess the biggest thing that intrigues me is whether it's a conscious effort at first, or if it's just someone who does something as an homage, and then it just gets popular again?
Either way, whether fashion or animation, it's a fascinating phenomenon nonetheless.

Toonfreak In reply to Riatsila [2011-09-29 21:33:44 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes it's a stylistic thing.
If a person enjoys the style of a certain animated show or film from the past, their style can (in return) reflect that previous artist.

There are lots of homages too....despite the supposed "animation company wars" (stuff like Disney VS. Dreamworks), most animators from various companies get along splendidly with each other (It's mostly the CEO's that tend to fight and quarrel).

Animators LOVE putting homages in their films and making fun of each other. It's all in good fun.

Case in Point....
Mario Bros- [link]
Frank and Ollie- [link]
Katamari - [link]
Pokemon -[link]
Totoro- [link]
South Park- [link]
Star Wars (among others) -[link]

(I could go on and on...LOL)

Normally the homages are very desecrate (and go by really fast) (The ones above NOT being good examples)
Like...hrm...(a few I know off the top of my head)
[link]
[link]

Also, there are name homages too....
Ex. Mr. Harriman from Foster's was probably named after George Herriman, the creator of Krazy Kat--> [link]

Animators LOVE doing stuff like that! So it wouldn't be surprising if there was an entire show based on the homage to another show.
XD

Always meant to respond to this...feel kind of horrible taking so long to get back to you given how much time went into your response T_T

I guess mostly I was meaning the cyclical fad of making an homage to a particular era of animation, rather than a hat-tip to a particular show or character.

*Nodnod* I loved those those, especially the Cthulhu/Totoro bit, and the South Park in FLCL (They also did an homage to South Park in "Negima!?", [link] . FLCL did it better, but still funny XD)

I know they do It's always fun to give some credit to the people who's work inspired you :3

I think it's the fact that she's black and white that makes her creepy. xD

Oh gosh, her face xD I like it though!

That was a really weird video xDD but I was actually impressed by how smooth and natural the clown guy/white ghost man moved and walked. I always expect animation from back then to be more choppy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toonfreak In reply to Squeakcore [2011-09-28 21:32:30 +0000 UTC]

One of the main reasons why the animation was so smooth (as I said above), is because a majority of that dance was rotoscoped.
(A.K.A.-they film a person in live action, and trace over the movements to make the cartoon.)
^_^

Squeakcore In reply to Toonfreak [2011-09-28 21:40:19 +0000 UTC]

I read over it, but I had no idea what the rotoscoping procedure, or technology was like back then, not very good I assumed, but I was wrong xD

It makes me wonder if animation in general will ever go out of business because of all this newer and fancier motion-capture technology D: something I've been thinking about lately.
