So be honest. How many people, the second time round, just sort of hit their heads against a wall when they watched this bit again?

I figured everyone would get that out of their system the first time. I mean, there's "plot twist fueled by poorly timed idiocy," and then there's "how do you even do that by accident?"

Typical dumb sort of plot twist on this.Β  Everything might have gone differently were it not for the main characters doing some dumb ass thing.Β  Be it Vegeta not killing Cell (in his 2nd form) or what have you.Β  As the oh wise Dark Helmet "now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb".

Seriously people, Lelouch wasn't all that smart. Nor was he that good a Dark Messiah. Now Ozymandias from Watchmen, he pulled off his plan to avert world destroying thermonuclear and only killed 3,000,009 people to do it. That and he never cackled, never acted erratically, never acted in an ass backward way and never wasted either funds or personel, unlike Lelouch.

But that's why I think Lelouch is a better "Dark Messiah" character than either OzymandiasΒ or Light Yagami (Death Note); Lelouch's mistakes and emotions made him feel more human and relatable than most "Dark Messiah" characters. Also he had an actual motivation to do the things that he did as opposed to other characters of his archetypes.

Β

That's how I see it anyways...

I'd blame part of his erratic behavior on the fact that he's 16 and hellbent on revenge.
Also, if you're using R2 as basis for him wasting personnel etc, keep in mind that R2 was NOT what the creator had in mind for season two. That was a snafu caused by the tv station deciding that the series had gotten a sufficient fanbase to qualify it for a move from midnight on Sunday to a prime-time slot. Which meant they had to restart the series essentially and re-explain everything they'd explained in the series up TO that point.

Besides - would Lelouch be so interesting to watch if he were perfect?

To be fair, R1 wasn't what the creator had in mind. At all.

Right. Come down off the soapbox whenever you're ready.

Wasn't that the poinst you were making?

Nah. The point I was making is that of ANYTHING Lelouch could've said, he could not POSSIBLY have tempted fate more than saying that line. I mean really, he was trying to explain his Geass to Euphy and THAT was the first example that came to mind? Not, "do a jig naked" or anything else that wouldn't result in genocide?

My point isn't that Lelouch isn't that smart - I consider him the Patron Saint of Magnificent Bastards - I'm saying that in this particular scenario, he was asking for it. Diabolus Ex Machina.

As for Ozymandias... personally, I never liked the guy. He's smug, he's competant to the point of being uninteresting, and the idea of word peace stemming from the fear of being arbitrarily wiped out at a moments notice doesn't make much sense. We already have that possibility. They're called asteroids. Look at all the world peace we got.

Now, I'm by no means saying Lelouch is perfect. He fucks up several times. Some of his actions are outright stupid. However, I personally am of the opinion that Zero Requiem was so fucking awesome that he qualifies as the Patron Saint of Magnificent Bastardry.

Xanatos is the Master of Xanatos Gambits, of course. He's fucking Xanatos. (Admittedly I should finish watching Gargoyles before saying that. I stopped watching out of boredom of the globetrotting episodes.)
