Yeah, I've heard from people who experienced bad stuff here on DA. I have to admit, my run-ins with nasty trolls has been limited to an absolute minimum. If anything, I've mainly formed strong bonds and friendships with people here, which has helped improve my view of Deviantart. I know that there does occur nasty stuff, and I'm really sorry for the sweet people who have to endure that. It should be a nice experience, in here, chilling and sharing interests, tips and feedback.
Oh well.
You should definitely keep the positive angle - anything else would be a shame, and there truly are some nice people in here. I swear to the gods, I'm really flattered by your kind words - honestly, I just want to appear as a proper human being, nothing more - you know, general courtesy.
Btw. your comments are so amazing . they really brightens a day, and I truly appreciate them!

Much has happened to me on here in ways that would make others permanently run for the hills, never to return. The number of trolls and bad people I encountered here was staggering, and I just only hope I'm still not being bad-mouthed behind my back. I never imagined the capacity of evil inside one person could have.

As of now I'm moving forward from the ridiculous drama and trying to focus on what I care about most. You're very welcome! You deserve to hear praising compliments!

You're welcome. ^^

Question, how do you draw expressions so well? I mean, you have such lively drawings, and their expressions are just perfect. How do you do it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TopHatTurtle In reply to WingsOfASong [2013-11-13 00:55:40 +0000 UTC]

Exaggeration. Honestly, exaggerate your poses and expressions. Also work on fluid and dynamic poses, I think it's what does it for me. My early drawings were very static and stiff, but once I got a grasp of how to make fluid and dynamic poses everything else came rather naturally.

Not much of a help, I'm sure, but I think it's the only proper answer I have

WingsOfASong In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-11-13 00:57:18 +0000 UTC]

So, exaggeration and dynamic poses. Cool. ^^ I have trouble with those, actually. And how on earth do you draw your hands so well? O_o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TopHatTurtle In reply to WingsOfASong [2013-11-13 01:02:28 +0000 UTC]

Hands were fucking tricky, and it took me AGES until I finally found the method to do so.

I was watching some version of an X-men cartoon a few years ago; one of the characters had a very basic structure hand-design, but it was so useful to me.

But take a look at these, might be of help: drawasamaniac.com/2012/12/how-…

Amaryllex In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-11-13 00:55:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh well, at least you don't try to copy him and that's great!))

For me the most difficult character is Mr. Flaversham. I have no good works with him to submit at all So Basil and Ratigan can be seen in nearly all of my newest pics)) I draw them nearly all the time and everywhere))

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TopHatTurtle In reply to Amaryllex [2013-11-13 00:58:06 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, Flaversham came SO naturally to me. He's wonderful to draw, and I was just happy tog et away with drawing him as much as I've done.

Ratigan is another doll to draw.

But Basil is SO tricky, darn it!

Amaryllex In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-11-13 01:09:26 +0000 UTC]

Ahaha, great))) For me it's always a big pleasure to draw Basil)) I truly cannot understand why lots of artists find him so difficult to draw But it's normal, I think 'cause everyone has his own preferences and abilities))) But I must say I would never think that it is difficult for you to draw Basil. You'r one always turns out so natural, so alive Oo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TopHatTurtle In reply to Amaryllex [2013-11-13 01:13:54 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't really think it's a question of him being hard to draw for me, but more the fact that I'm not happy with how I drew him Yeah, well, I suppose we're our own worst critic. My problem is also that instead of taking Basil and converting him entirely into my own style, I'm trying to keep him as true to the show as possible.

This is a nice gesture piece that is visually appealing.  It shows you understand the underlying structure of the character and are applying squash and stretch techniques to really push his personality through your work.  In particular I like how you make his eyes very expressive and you emote through the whole body not just part.  The coloring and line work on this is fluid giving him your distinct "style" but maintaining respect for the original Disney design.

All in all a nice piece from you, but then, that's to be expected.

Thank you so much for these ace comments. It really makes me all warm and gussy on the inside, when people go so in-depth with their comments, and I want you to know how much I appreciate it.

ThermidorResistance In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-11-12 16:09:03 +0000 UTC]

Your welcome, normally I'm an avid fave bomber, but when an artist takes the time to actually request valid comments beyond "kwel" or "OMGZ itz Bazul I totally luff him lyke foreverz" I empathize with that.  It's nice getting those kinds of comments, but do they really do anything beyond stroke the ego?  Not really, so I just wanted to give you a bit more of a "reason" why I liked your piece.

Granted, as I get to know you better if you desire, I can critique too, but I tend to avoid it until I get to know the artist.  As the saying goes, point a finger at another, three more point back at you.  Giving a critique is a delicate process because just as I am looking at your work, you may look at mine and go "really?" So… yeah that's um where that stands.

I honestly really dislike faving without commenting, tbh, which is why I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to leave these stunning and amazing comments. They really encourage me to continue doing shits and giggles, so thank you very much

Not only are they really encouraging, one can tell you've spent more than 2 seconds writing an in-depth and really thoughtful comment. So thank you so so much.

ThermidorResistance In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-11-24 02:17:17 +0000 UTC]

I understand that, and I appreciate the feedback as well.  I will continue to offer feedback and comments as much as I can, to the best of my ability at least.  However, I would be lying if I said I comment on EVERY piece I fave.  Experience on DA has taught me that even the best artists do not have time to answer every single comment, and they don't really mind "fave bombing".  At the same time, if I like a piece but don't have the time to really write an in depth comment, I tend to fave it, and if I see more that I like I will go back and comment with something more in depth.

GMD is my very first fandom that I fell in love with, so much I have an entire room dedicated to my collection of GMD stuff.  I'd like to think I'm part of the original Baskerville Irregulars which was a group that started back in 1999 on an Angelfire forum long before DA existed.  The oldest GMD club here was started by who was one of the Irregulars and is still one of the largest fan-based clubs on DA to this date.

For this reason, and this reason alone I like to take the time to comment when I see art that both displays the original design motif of the Disney movie, but incorporates interesting and original characters that are not Mary Sues or copies of an existing character design into the fandom.  I find your work to exemplify that.  I wish more fan artists would take a page from your notebook and do the same.

TopHatTurtle In reply to ThermidorResistance [2013-11-24 02:24:02 +0000 UTC]

OH wow, again thanks.

Yeah, no I get people faving, and I get that it is a compliment. I would NEVER complain about faves, but I often miss comments; especially when I have pieces I've put a lot of energy in, only to have it receive one comment and eighty faves... Just gets to me in the end :/

But wow, that's really interesting. I have to admit, I've always been a fan of the movie, but I've only recently entered the fandom, and even that is very scarce.

I have to admit I do have my own Oc's, and I can't say whether they're Mary-sue/Gary-stu or not, but well - they're mine and I really like them.

Anyhoo, I really appreciate your praises, and I can't say much more thank you Thanks a bunch.

ThermidorResistance In reply to TopHatTurtle [2013-11-24 02:53:10 +0000 UTC]

From what I've seen of your OC's they are fantastic and well thought out.  They fit so well into the world of GMD and really add to it.  No complaints here at all!
