Factuality

The aliens never once referred to themselves as poleepkwas.

The only time the term was used was once in Alive in Joburg. In the MNU Spreads lies blog, they refer to one another as outlanders. We know that there are differences in District 9 and AIJ, and it may no longer be canon. Also the human who uttered the phrase held contempt for the aliens and could be using a derogatory phrase for them.

Blomkamp stated this in an interview from io9.com

"As you may know, District 9 was inspired by Neill Blomkamp's short film Alive In Joburg. But what many people don't realize is that he created Alive In Joburg's footage of people being interviewed about aliens, by using real interviews.

I was asking black South Africans about black Nigerians and Zimbabweans. That's actually where the idea came from was there are aliens living in South Africa, I asked "What do you feel about Zimbabwean Africans living here?" And those answers — they weren't actors, those are real answers..."

So Poleepkwa may actually be a slur for an immigrant of probably Nigerian or Zimbabwean origin.

Question of authenticity

Should they then be referred to as "Poleepkwa" but as "Prawns" and "Outlanders"? "Poleepkwa" is not, technically, a canon term for them from the actual film District 9, whereas "Prawn" is used in the film and "Outlanders" is from Christopher's blog, which could be considered canon. The film was an adaptation of AIJ, but it was not the same film, so I don't think what is made in AIJ should be automatically applicable to District 9.
