What everyone else said: it's a truly beautiful and uplifting photograph. What I like is the graininess; you rarely see that in color shots anymore.

This image makes me want to smile. The girl has a lovely warm expression, and it looks very natural. And I love the overall colour contrast between the pale blue and her red hair.
Strange question, but do you have any advice for getting shots like this? Getting the subject relaxed enough in front of the camera so the images are less posed and more candid?

I know you're asking them, but here's some advice from someone who is occasionally the subject of photography: Talk to them while you're shooting, and keep shooting while they're responding. Joke around, ask questions. It takes a while for some to warm up to the camera and/or photographer even if they are in front of one often. Give them enough direction to let them flow on their own. It could take ten minutes, it could take an hour, it could take multiple shoots. Basically, make sure you're both having fun. Hope this can be of some use to you!

Any good advice is welcome, doesn't matter where it comes from.
I'm just more used to shooting fully posed photographs, where every detail has been carefully thought out. I was hoping to branch out to something a bit more spontaneous.
Thanks for the tips!

A really beautiful photo, her laughter seems so genuine and warm. You did so well to capture and portray that!

To me, she looks like a mix of Lindsay Lohan and Emma Stone.
