This is a simple side by side comparison of the turrents used between the Galmon/Gamilon empire and Earth Defence Force (EDF).

It is interesting to note the longer 'barrel' on the EDF vs the shorter snub design of the Gamilons.

It is clear the guns the Gamilons used were more effective, and that is mainly due to two major factors: Technology differences (Vastly greater then Earth's) and massive numbers.

Gamilon likely did not have to worry so much about radiation as their race was use to it. So maybe the lack of barrel is simply their lack of regard for this.

I would have to watch the series CLOSELY to know if the Barrel of the EDF gave them more accuracy, distance, or any advantage they tried to explore. EDF and Gamilons both rolled their ships to get a up/down motion in combat. so its not stated but likely they either had limited motion or not control up and down without SHIP turning that way.

Looks wise I am still more impressed with the Gamilons.
But the EDF seems more logical.
