Description
This honestly felt like the longest thing to work on, in part because I had to go re-learn how to draw dragon wings, but I did learn a bunch while doing so! All in all, pretty fun.ΒFor CFerretRun of their character, August!Β

Not necessarily! Large pectoral muscles are needed for flight, if you look up bird muscles, which is what I reference when drawing dragons (wyverns especially), you'll see what I meanΒ s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/oβ¦

i know about the pectoral part, mate i've read about the birds' strong breastbone to maintain a safe flight. but i didn't think it would apply here. far as i know, some birds such as eagles, their pecs are big but not big enough to make them appear so.
my opinion is that this trait doesn't suit a dragon. all dragons in fiction have defined muscles without oversized pics.
i mean check out that guy for example vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/dβ¦
but if that's your style, then i respect it. after all, you're trying to keep an accurate anatomy here. my intention is NOT tell you what to do. i'm just stating what's on my mind, 'tis all
all in all, this is just my only critic on this otherwise glorious piece of art.

Well I mean, anatomical correctness and personal preference are two very different things. I can't cater to everyone's likes, unfortunately, but I can try and make a creature as functional as I can using a combination of real life reference and some guesstimating. Sure, a lot of dragons in fiction have a sleeker build/weird humanoid chests, but they'd never realistically be able to fly, which is my prime concern when drawing these guys Β
Even birds of prey have large pectorals/keels, they just seem smaller due to bird's longer legs/large feet, making the whole bird look a little more proportional thank your average pigeon or chicken.Β

The only exception to this rule are grounded birds, such as ostrich, emu, cassowary and so on, who lack keels entirely, and even those have weird dino-like barrel chests.

" anatomical correctness and personal preference are two very different things" that's true after all, this is fiction. if you wanna abide by the laws of biology then that's your choice. some others prefer doing things their way without worrying about reality and that's very normal and okay too. just like the dragon you saw
and yes, some people may like it and some may not. no artist on this earth would be able to create something that everyone likes. the most important thing, however, is that you do what you want sometimes art is more about satisfying yourself than the people.
i guess the shape of pecs depend on a bird's ability to fly, i suppose.
