                                                                                            "So Maybe it Wasn't an Asteroid"

                                                                                                Extinction of the Dinosaurs

    The extinction of the dinosaurs was brought about by over-hunting of the multiple species by big game hunters and poachers alike.  Up to 1957, the giant lizards were freely walking the land and swimming the seas in concert with their human (and other mammalian) counterparts.  In 1957, naturalists advised that hunting and poaching had reduced the world dinosaur conservation status to "endangered."  In 1982, U.S. President Ronald Reagan announced the official opening of three American Dinosaur Conservancy Parks (or DCPs), spread across the country in an effort to provide a proper environmental habitat for as many species as possible.

    Other First World nations followed the path set by the United States.  However, many of those countries did not have the geographic range or environmental diversity to care for dinosaurs in situ.  Many species found state-sponsored conservancy homes in Africa.  Although strictly monitored by the World Wildlife Fund and international agencies, illegal poaching for skins, bones and teeth (believed to have mystic powers by many from Southeast Asia to Korea), quickly dropped dinosaur populations to "critically endangered" levels.

    In 1986, with the Cold War approaching a final phase of massive global government spending on military research, design, procurement and deployment, DCPs around the globe -- including those in America -- were opened to legalized, managed hunting for increased income as East and West faced off.  Sudden climate catastrophes in parts of the globe reduced human populations to starvation levels, seeing the vast dinosaur parks as ready sources of food.  Soon, the American DCPs and one European DCP outside of Paris were all that remained, the hundreds of extant dinosaur species reduced to a few dozen.

    The military spending of the U.S. Government led almost directly to the downfall of the dinosaurs.  The three parks in North America continued to be open to legalized hunting, but in an effort for peak efficiency, the Department of the Interior authorized a program that unfortunately led to massive over-harvesting.  Big game hunters from around the world came to the United States for the increasingly narrow opportunity to take a terrible lizard as a trophy.  Dave Grumman (of Northrop-Grumman) was one of the most prolific of international hunters, scoring more than three dozen kills over the course of two years.  He donated most of his trophies (generally harvested with a CZ 550 Safari Magnum bolt-action rifle chambered for the massive .505 Gibbs cartridge) to institutions like the Smithsonian.  Keeping only his favorite, most meaningful trophies, he is considered the harvester of the very last dinosaur, a brontosaurus nicknamed "Tammy," in the Georgia  DCP.

    Today, Dave travels the world giving public addresses and doing motivational speaking.  He continues his passion of hunting endangered wildlife.

                                                                                                            =======

    In other news, a science unit led by the father and son team of Luis and Walter Alvarez have discovered a global sediment layer rich in iridium, an element that only rarely occurs on Earth, but is frequently found in asteroids.  By back-tracing sediment layer thickness and iridium concentration, the Alvarez team has suggested that a six-mile-wide asteroid struck the northern Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

    This theory has been dismissed in most scientific circles along the lines that nobody really cares.

                                                                                                          -=-=-=--=--=-
