Description
Winter may be officially over but Torqual Fashion Week is NOT! I would have finished by now if it hadn't been for that pesky LED monitor and the two weeks of headaches it brought. I am just about re-accustomed to my small old monitor again and that means I can continue doing art and enjoying it. I am really glad I managed to get this pic completed as I really like how Nicole looks post some new morphs and eye enhancements. This isn't abandoning her original design - she's probably 95% the same - but each time I work on a character it gets her closer to how I envisage them.I have been very sketchy about Nicole's background as she was a character born of 3D and a little by accident, meaning I don't have any writings or pre-3D art of her. I did imagine her as a darker and grittier character than my others, being the only one who actually commits real violence. I originally saw her as an assassin; but for a while I've wanted to broaden her to be someone who works freelance, using her military/intelligence experience, for money. This might mean she is an assassin, bodyguard, courier, part of a team or working alone. She may be employed by governments or private organisations. But WHY does she do it, and WHAT or WHO does she need the money for? These are still the questions: maybe we will find out eventually.
Nicole's entry into TFW evokes the time she spent in the Middle East as a mercenary (or 'Private Military Contractor' as they are known these days). With dust rather than cold being the main hazard, her outfit includes a keffiyeh as well as wraparound shades and a long leather coat (inspired not a little by The Matrix). Her gun is a silenced Steyr TMP.
I worked with monsieurpaul on the concept for this outfit and he encouraged me down more creative and time-consuming avenues. But I like what resulted!
The scarf is made by a combo of two models with a custom texture - and the t-shirt/vest is customized likewise. Overall the outfit uses items from 8 different Daz and Renderosity products, hopefully showing what is possible with ideas, Photoshop and a little hard work. I hope that TFW encourages a few more of my esteemed fellow 3D artists, as it has PoserGirlsInTrouble to make and customize original outfits.
...come on guys, get creative!
And be sure to check out the other entries so far into Torqual Fashion Week:

Gorgeously done!
My only real critique: Her shirt's collar looks a little flat, and could use the same sort of seam rounding you've given her jeans and coat.
The softer knit fabric, of course, won't have as thick and lumpy a seam as the heavier denim and leather; just narrow and slightly-raised ridges in three places: the outer edge next to the skin, and the areas just above above and below the seam where the collaring joins the main shirt fabric.
If you want to be thorough, you could also add a little more highlight and texture to her boots, as you did to her coat, but that's a minor detail.
Overall, well-done; her clothes add up to a particular style and persona and make her stand out.

Thanks for this very detailed critique. It's great to know that anyone is looking as closely as me. Glad you liked it.

She looks so cool! Like a militant rebel. I don;t think anybody would ever be able to put this girl out.
But, you know what they say: When in doubt, shoot a dart.

Just checked that out - you're right! Violette looks a lot like Nicole. pixhost.me/avaxhome/39/a8/0024…
I can honestly say though that I wasn't influenced as I never played the game. Nicole is a little influenced by Cate Archer though (if you know who she is).

She's a lovely girl, but I've always found women a bit intimidating when they have firearms and can blow my head off.

Torqual I'm just repeating myself but every time I do its true, awesome job sir!
Nicole still looks lovely but you can tell that messing with her is not a good idea. The leather long coat is a great accessory, I dig long coats on characters and Nicole rocks it. Like the digital cammo plus jeans. Its a great addition to the TFW cast with Nicole being the most casual and job focused of the looks so far.
Thanks for all the hard work on the pic Torqual

Like all soldiers of fortune, Nicole finds the danger thrilling. Her demeanor implies she is currently on a mission, wary of lurking danger.

YAY!!! Nicky again! Well done Torq! Always a pleasure to see my favourite Torqual gal Extremely pleasing to see a fine looking female with an edge. Keep it up pal. I know I'm totally unqualified to give you artistic critiques, but do you want some "technical" advice on her gear?

Torqual3D In reply to grimweird [2014-03-25 02:09:06 +0000 UTC]
You're more than welcome to, although remember that this combo of gear is stylized and not totally realistic....or at all. It incorporates a range of influences from the Hurt Locker, Far Cry 2, the Matrix, and Ripley in Aliens... so go figure. It does it's job as long as it makes you think "Counter Terrorists Win!" or something similar...

grimweird In reply to Torqual3D [2014-03-25 20:12:27 +0000 UTC]
Umm... Nothing much really... Just that there are technical issues which an "operator" would be aware of. Since your goal here is to create visually appealing art, my criticisms would simply be counter-productive. But if you still want it though, I'll gladly give you some. It won't make for a very sexy picture though
Well, an outfit like that on a woman would likely stick out like a sore thumb in the conservative, Muslim middle-east unless she's operating outta Dubai maybe. In addition, the heat would make leather kinda impractical. Wearing MARPAT camo would be more effective on outer clothing and again depending on the exact mission may attract unwanted attention.
Unless she's using it only for carrying extra magazines or maybe a backup handgun in that shoulder rig AND is left handed, there's no need for it In any case I'm kinda unaware of a holster for the TMP. And about the TMP itself: "trigger discipline" man
Still on the weapon, if she's going into a warzone, a 9mm SMG isn't really gonna get her very far. Perhaps something compact; like a HK416 or G36C would be a better choice.
As I said, most of these suggestions would make Nicole distinctly un-sexy. So while practical, they may not be aesthetically pleasing if you know what I mean Hope this helps dude!

By the way, did you ever play Syndicate ? Because this outfit looks like she stepped right out of that game.
Maybe the stylistic contradication was to mix in the Middle-Eastern influences at all, but it was monsieurpaul who sent me off down that route and I don't regret it. Nicole will definitely have spent some time there. Anyone with active front line service in a major military over the past ten years can scarcely have avoided it.

Yeah, we're both suckers for "technical details" I guess, probably why we enjoy writing about this stuff. We're GEEKS. So... Err... I'm gonna take another stab at this
Sorry man, I missed The Hurt Locker. But I get what you mean Also I know nothing much happens in Dubai by way of violence and mass destruction
I was using it as an example where something like what Nicky's wearing would not attract too much attention. I would assume with an "ensemble" like that, the point would be inconspicuousness, otherwise your male PMC outfit example would be pretty standard, if bland, gear.
As far as the keffiyeh, while it IS useful for keeping out the dust, most of Nicky's crowd would use it to simply blend in or conceal their identities... Umm... Leather jackets while great for innocuousness aren't really in vogue in that part of the world, regardless of the weather/temperature. As I recall, it's some sort of Islamic thing... Touching dead, unconsecrated animals or something like that IIRC.
If she's a PMC in that T.O, naturally, she wouldn't wear standard military camo fatigues, instead, I'd have gone for a "foreign journalist" look for clandestine work; baggy clothing and vests with lots of pouches, strangely shaped bags and all. But again... not very sexy.
The shoulder rig appears to be for a right shoulder/side carry, pulling a handgun from such a holster would be possible for a right-hander, but very awkward, especially with intervening clothing. As far as weapon concealability is concerned perhaps you would consider these harnesses as well: www.machinegundealer.com/ With a jacket, coat OR a burqa, these COULD work with an assault carbine.
I've always believed that the nastiest wars in the world are those which are not as well covered by western media. Conflicts in Africa, the Philippines and the former Soviet states for example as well as the ongoing drug fueled unpleasantness in central / south America and S.E Asia can turn awfully bloody and no one ever hears a thing. Syndicate? Yep... Well, except for the Fedora, those 'borgs carry miniguns and missile launchers in their trenchcoats man. Freakin' awesome
Lastly... And only because I suspect you haven't watched 'em yet: www.animeplus.tv/anime/search?… Here's an appetizer for the series: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQIqgx… You wanted "The Matrix" right? I present you it's inspiration.

Torqual3D In reply to grimweird [2014-03-26 02:02:10 +0000 UTC]
Oh I agree wholeheartedly that something like this would be a lot more appropriate and, as you say, a bit less sexy. However, if Nicole was working for Blackwater or any other PMC then she would not be able to wear anything resembling a uniform. Take a look at the PMC's who appear halfway through The Hurt Locker (Ralph Fiennes and his crew). They are going after guys from the deck of cards. They are wearing basically T-Shirts, cargo pants, boots and cloaks, but most importantly headscarves and shades. The key is protection from the sun and dust. Nicole's outfit would give her full head covering and if the coat is done up, head-to-toe covering of skin meaning that she wouldn't stick out at all. You wouldn't even know she was a woman at first glance. And the coat is a great place to conceal a weapon the size of a TMP if you were (for example) walking through a crowded souk.
Here's an interesting (male) outfit I found for a PMC.
If anything, the impractical part of the outfit is the heeled boots and also the skinny jeans, which are of course inappropriate. But the boots went with the matrix-style coat and the jeans were just to show that she's a civilian. The shoulder holster is actually a twin one from a Lara Croft set and therefore works with either hand and, yes, there's a backup pistol in there.
I lived in Dubai for 4 years and didn't see any military folk there at all - it's a very peaceful place (apart from the motorways) - and in the right places you can see women walking down the street in bikini tops. But yes, I agree, not in Iraq. The heat is excessive for 6 months a year but I reckon Nicole could easily wear a coat like this between December and February without getting fried.
Now what I have written above is clearly a nonsensical exercise in post-justification and mainly absurd but it was fun to write. I like to think of Nicole either working as a bodyguard or hunting down wanted guys and she has every right to to look hawt while doing so. In summary though, do imagine the outfit with the scarf and glasses on - in the winter - and it's not so absurd. And I could have held off the Matrix overtones but it was just too tempting!
Appreciate the feedback!
