Description oOOOOO ITS A NEW BUGGO!! Its been awhile hasn't it? Anyway, this guy was one of the first Hexians that I came up with! I had found and caught a deer fly (thought it was a moth at first) and studied it for a bit before drawing a really old sketch of it as a Hexian. And this was before Antlion even had a design, so it looked pretty bad! >u<

Anyway, here's a more refined design of the guy.

K SO IF YOU'D LIKE I'M LOOKING FOR A GOOD COLOUR SCHEME FOR SKIPPER??? And I'd really appreciate if you tried your own take on the layout of his colours! All I'm looking for is a flat layout that has some good contrast and colours pertaining to the real insect. If you'd like to give it a go you can use the transparent here: sta.sh/08qlaecxq4p
I'm not saying I'll choose any volunteered schemes and the final one, but I'm hoping to get some input from other ideas and mash the best parts together!!

 I'D APPRECIATE IT SO MUCH!!

What would be the areas you want to draw attention to in the design?

Well, some of the most important features include the eyes, wings, Hex Symbol, and antenne.

Angsty lone rouge with a loreful backstory and an integral part in explaining the corruption of his homeworld, if I had to put it in a nutshell

Do you mind telling me where the Hex symbol is?  I cant seem to find it.
[Edit: Never mind, I read the response to Chocolatefun449's comment, and I found it through that.]

oOO I LOVE HIS DESIGN!!! OUO
I especially love the fact that you put in the missing leg into his design. It's little things like that that go a long way towards an incredible design. ^V^
It will be quite the interesting thing to see how this character will be involved in the story. 'U'

Aaa you noticed the missing arm!! It was really symbolical, since he is yet another Hexian who left Harvada- I don't know how yet- and has been through some really tough events.
The hair covering up his Hex Symbol partially also nods to the lack of loyalty and the three arms. You'll notice that his wings aren't laser wings either; he's part of a group of Hexians who actually grow natural wings!

WHOA that's a lot of information to take in! OO
... I like the idea. 'V'
And I'm glad that you made a lot of conscious decisions on what exactly should go into the design, instead of randomly putting in ideas all at once into it and seeing what sticks. It makes the entire design a lot more polished, while also giving it that sense of character outside of the character's actions.
You know a design was truly done masterfully when you can tell what kind of person they are, their personality, their background history, their life decisions, everything about them, just by looking at the character alone. That's what goes into amazing character design, and you almost pulled it off completely perfectly!! 'U'
...
You know, I've kinda yearned for the day that I would be able to create completely unique and incredible designs for characters. I mean, sure, my characters now are fantastic but... it all came out of the fact that I just slammed random ideas together into a single point, and it all just so happened to fit. However, for the most part, it is almost never my intent. What I want is to make designs with meaning, with a purpose behind it. To have the character make sense in their surrounding, and to create designs based off of those characteristics I listed earlier. To create a design that works in accordance with the current plot point in a story. So seeing this character now, after you've explained the design choices... that... actually really inspired me...
... it... it hit me deep...
... and- GOSH DARN I'M TEARING UP HOW DO YOU KEEP INSPIRING ME LIKE THIS KAYLEN?!?! ;U;

Aaa awesome, I'm glad you see into all the little things I put into his design!! It was more or less trial and error; since the original design I had to go off of, the actual insect, and the character traits were really the only things I had to go off of. You can see in the earlier sketches (closest to the top left) that I was experimenting with the nose and possible armor.

At first glance designs can just work the first time you draw them- if your lucky- but really every character makes slight changes each time you draw them. Thats why you gotta keep drawing your OCs; evolving them to keep only the best traits and simplify themselves! Heck, Psaw especially has changed since his first design (Psaw OC Concept ). Slowly I drew him more thicker, squatter, and rounded; all things that better suit his character and personality. In fact, I have no doubt that Skipper will evolve in the same way!

I really think you should keep this in consideration when you redesign your SB characters, actually. Just go crazy with it until you find yourself focusing on key parts and go from there! I think that all of your characters would have a similar improvement, even if you just drew them a few times each week. Wait, and that's exactly what happened with the Ronomei squad isn't it?? So yea!

Aaaaaa ///uwu/// I'm glad I could inspire ya!

Yeah, and generally, that's what a design is in the end. A final product, a culmination of the multiple variations drawn before it. Eventually, as you keep redesigning a character and learn their basic characteristics, the design becomes more polished, and therefore, much better. ^^
And that's... something I have been neglecting to do for the SB guys. ^^'

The Adventures In Ronomei (AIR) characters was the very first time where I actually felt that I was improving TONS as an artist. And slowly, as I drew them like you said, they became more refined in the process. ^^
... However, the only exception that I can find with that... is Harven. He's been the one that gave me the most troubles in designing. And it's not because he is a T-Rex... it's because I had a VERY specific reason for why I included him in the first place. He plays a very special role in the story, and because of that, the design needs specifics about it that none of the other characters, besides Worm, have. And because of that, I've been stuck on designing him to this day... just like I have been with Boss from SB as well.
So for me, there IS a limit for what I can do... and it's a plot limit. Meaning that I can't break it unless I want to rewrite the entire story in my head.
... Other than that though, your design philosophy works great! 'U'

Inspiration.
Truly the most marvelous thing to feel, and even more spectacular to give. ^V^

I don't personally believe that there is a final product for a design. You can always land on perfect traits for one, but as the story progresses, of course, the character will develop and age. And thus more changing! Right until you stop using them- and I couldn't imagine suddenly stopping with Psaw (even after a series). I don't know how valid all this is, but its what I think personally.

I think that you could squeeze any little resemblance to your original character in and still fit the story! If he has to do something specific then so be it, just work around it to make the best design possible. Whatever integral part to the story any of your characters have, use it to your advantage! Make it special by using special features that these characters would uniquely have!

Yeah, I see your point. A design isn't quite final until the story is actually done. The design can always be revamped, changed up, etc. to fit into the current plot point, so it never technically IS final. However... there is always a point where the need to stop is necessary. Like with Spongebob... it's been run down to death by the Pres. of Nickelodeon, and look what good that did that.
The original creator of Spongebob left so long ago because of the fact that the show and its characters were being pushed to their absolute limit in the worst ways possible. And when you run out of all the possible things to do with a single character... do you continue to produce it and potentially make it worse, or do you allow it to die?
It is a very real question that I am sure a lot of show creators and artists had to ask themselves. Cause nothing can last forever, without it ever continuing to be as great.
...
...
... And I may have interpreted your reply wrong. ^^'
But I'll keep it in. 'v'

Well, I mean, I understand, and I'm not gonna be getting rid of the way they look per say... but rather the kinds of things that they wear, their hairstyles, personalities, facial features, movement, and a whole bunch of other things that actually make sense with their own physical, and psychological problems. The main problem I'm having with my characters is that they're supposed to act a certain way, however, the way they look doesn't specifically reflect that... again, except for Peck. ^^
Candace is generally more outgoing, so loose clothing would make more sense to her than skin tight clothing.
Peck is shy but strong, so that means clothes that cover up his body would fit more perfectly... which is why I say that Peck is the exception. 'U' ... However, there is another part of Peck that SEVERELY affects his everyday life, so there is an extra bit of clothing that he has to wear on top of all of that. I'll go into more detail about that after I finally get to Peck's redesign. ^v^
And then for Boss... ... he's the hardest one. He's meant to be extremely random, meaning his style is always constantly shifting between tons of different styles.
Mardel is a leader of a "terrorist" organization... obviously, his clothing should have at least something to deal with the idea that he is a leader.
Prana... really needs clothes badly.
Etc., etc. BASICALLY... none of their clothing works for the kind of jobs duties, and personalities of the characters at hand. And that's why I feel the need to redesign them...
...
But yeah, I'll try my best to make sure that these designs are the best I can muster. It doesn't matter how much time until then... as long as I continue to try. ^u^
