Take one boy,
Brown eyes filled
with the curiosity
and wonder
of one less than
half his age.
Tall and slim,
so when her arms
wrap around him
she can almost do so
twice,
with her head resting
comfortably on
his chest.
Mind filled
to capacity
with melodies
and philosophies
and facts about
Native American plagues and
extended techniques,
yet longing for
more.
Add in a darkness
which lingers over
his heart,
shadowing his thoughts,
his feelings, his actions,
leaving those who care
about him
isolated, helpless,
alone.
And, on top of that,
Place a strong dislike
for good-byes,
running away
at an interaction's
end.
Take one girl,
Blue-eyed, finally
ready to look at
someone else.
She sees beauty
in everything,
Especially within
the brown-eyed boy.
In all his
substantial and minute
contradictions.
Even his darkness.
She only wishes
she could hold
him closely
enough,
Help him fight
the shadows.
Turn on the light.
But she senses
the way his eyes
look past her,
through her.
She is of no
consequence
to him.
It is not her light
he searches for.
And so she picks up
her heart,
(tossed away
in mild disinterest)
Dusts it off gently,
And calmly builds up
the walls
according to
an improved blueprint
of her own design.
