Description
The cold weather uniform is meant for sub-zero temperatures. The coat can be worn during even mildly chilly weather when there's not much to do, e.g. standing on guard. The coat and trousers have the same smartcloth technology as the BDUs, but the power supply is more limited, as the CWU doesn't have much contact with exposed skin, so only a select few patterns can be programmed, and the number of switches (changing from one pattern to another) is finite. The shimmering ability has been lost as well.
The fur cap shown on the mannequin is the prescribed cold weather cap. The cap has two sets of flaps used to cover the wearer's ears: the thick flaps secured on top of the cap, and a smaller set on the inside of the cap. The cap is called the Snoopy by the troops.
The pattern shown is the m/09 Cold Weather NCU.
Under the CWU is the synthetic wool cold weather undergarment. Or the Teddy. This can be worn under any uniform when the weather gets cold enough.
This uniform is not the warmest item yet. Even warmer clothes are considered specialized garments. Units serving in cold environments get arctic/alpine oriented equipment. (picture Hoth in SW:tESB) This uniform is the topmost garment in standard clothing layering that every Republic soldier comes standard with.
If the weather gets REALLY cold, the soldier has to wear his T-shirt & shorts, polo shirt & long johns, Teddy shirt and pants, NCU with CWU on top. And on his feet at least a cotton-wool-cotton-wool layering of socks, with either his standard boots or thick cold weather wellies.
Based on the Finnish Defense Force m/05 Cold Weather Uniform . The cap is also based on the FDF counterpart . The teddy is also based on the FDF Nalleasu (teddysuit).

They stop rain and meltwater. You can't take a swim in them, but they can handle any amount of snow and ice that might melt under the soldier.
The smarcloth the BDUs and NCUs are made out of are somewhat water-resistant: they're for all intents and purposes rainproof.

Looks pretty good, I was thinking about some cold weather clothes for me too. The only thing I'm not so sure about are the clips on the suspenders on trousers. When wearing combat gear (which you should draw some time) over the clothes it might be uncomfortable. Oh, and I like the cap, reminds me of the russian military winter hat.

The clips are to facilitate easier wear: you can put the trousers on or off much quicker (I know from experience). The clips are of a slim design, so they won't interfere with the soldier's movements.
The Ushanka ([link] ) is dumber (like the british bearskin hat raping a cap like this ([link] )). The finnish design is slimmer and rounder.

Well, just wanted to say that I kinda like the design. BTW I always wanted to buy such a Ushanka, a real sowjet, but never found a good one.

Since when did the soviets make ANY good consumer product? We have a saying: VenΓ€lΓ€iset tulitikut (russian matches), meaning that they can f*** up even the simplest of things. Lujaa venΓ€lΓ€istΓ€ laatua!
If you want to buy an ushanka, don't buy russian, don't buy fish fur. The hat may be of a good basic structure for winter, but the proportions of the different parts could make it unusable. I think you could find some at the army shop varusteleka: [link] GR&Y174=1706 It's in finnish, but it's pretty explicit. BTW, "osta" means "buy."

Well but at least the russian equipment is almost indestructable.
And I usually don't trust Internet-shops, especially if they are not even in my own language.^^
