Description
The cold weather uniform is meant for sub-zero temperatures. The coat can be worn during even mildly chilly weather when there's not much to do, e.g. standing on guard.
The coat and trousers have the same smartcloth technology as the BDUs, but the power supply is more limited, as the CWU doesn't have much contact with exposed skin, so only a select few patterns can be programmed, and the number of switches (changing from one pattern to another) is finite. The shimmering ability has been lost as well.
The fur cap shown on the mannequin is the prescribed cold weather cap. The cap has two sets of flaps used to cover the wearer's ears: the thick flaps secured on top of the cap, and a smaller set on the inside of the cap. The cap is called the Snoopy by the troops.
The pattern shown is the m/09 Cold Weather NCU.
Under the CWU is the synthetic wool cold weather undergarment. Or the Teddy. This can be worn under any uniform when the weather gets cold enough.
This uniform is not the warmest item yet. Even warmer clothes are considered specialized garments. Units serving in cold environments get arctic/alpine oriented equipment. (picture Hoth in SW:tESB) This uniform is the topmost garment in standard clothing layering that every Republic soldier comes standard with.

If the weather gets REALLY cold, the soldier has to wear his T-shirt & shorts, polo shirt & long johns, Teddy shirt and pants, NCU with CWU on top. And on his feet at least a cotton-wool-cotton-wool layering of socks, with either his standard boots or thick cold weather wellies.
