Template by KingZanderSanchez-iHere ye, here ye! This be doth YDKJGuy-Towers bringingeth thou this morrow's Thursday Showcase! Come, my noble countrymen - as this showcase takes us back before the United Kingdom founded its Thirteen Colonies!
#6 - Tigtone - Okay, now here we have one of Adult Swim's newest series created by the aficionados at Titmouse (famous for Metalocalypse and Superjail). This series originally started out as a pilot under the title "The Begun of Tigtone". Essentially, this may seem like poor-midtermed Annoying Orange style of animation, and of course it is, but better. It starts interesting with a Heavy Metal style of artwork, but then the plot gives you a guessing motion and then goes full Looney Tunes on you. It's barely animated, but from what I've heard, some people despise the Annoying Orange, yet they're cool with this. My advice? Why not see for yourself? Whether you like it or not, it's different strokes for different folks. (No surprise I chose this over Lazor Wulf...)
#5 - Mad Jack the Pirate - (Note: I know, the age of pirates is after the Renaissance/Medieval age, but bear with me.) Pluszaczek sure knows how to find some classics, doesn't he? Starting off, if you think the now dead company known as Saban is solely famous for making Power Rangers and Digimon, think again! They've also made some really obscure cartoons, such as this one. The concept is of the adventures of the rather unsuccessful and cowardly Pirate Jack who despite his failures never doubts his own excellence and his dim-witted anthropomorphic rat sidekick Snuk as they sail the seas on their ship the Sea Chicken. Overall, a good series for a delectable 23 eps, but it has some flaws to it. So, off topic... why did Kyle A. Carozza adapt Mighty Magiswords as a full time series and not his original work, MooBeard the Pirate? Now, that would've been interesting since it was one of the most underrated pilots ever. (And why does the animation for this series look similar to Wunschpunsch?)
#4 - Tenko and the Guardians of Magic - Goin' two for two on the Saban animations, are we? Here's a series that expresses medieval myths (magic), but doesn't accurately put them to use. Here's what you're dealing with (and oh boy, it's a long one): A young female magician, already an experienced performer, is chosen by an old man named Tenko to come to his school for magicians and learn real magic. At the school, the young magician befriends a number of other magicians already attending the school and learning magic from Tenko. The new magician begins her training and quickly becomes the best magician at the school.
Impressed by her abilities, the master names the young magician “Princess Tenko” in recognition as his successor as the next Tenko and the Master Guardian of the Tenko Box, a magical wardrobe that contains many magic gems known as the Starfire Gems. Two of the most senior students, the twins Jana and Jason watch on. Jana become jealous of the newcomer when she is chosen to become Tenko’s successor and conspires for rebellion. Jason tries to talk some sense stating that unlike Jana who had slacked off during training, Mariko is more responsible and therefore Tenko could trust her. She convinces him to help her and succeed at stealing two of the Starfire Gems for their own use.
When Jana and Jason are discovered, Master Tenko is overcome by their magic. In the scuffle, the Tenko Box is damaged, and the remaining Starfire gems are scattered all over the world and some through time. The twins escape as the new Tenko arrives in an attempt to stop them. Pleased with the young magician’s abilities, Master Tenko entrusts Princess Tenko and his remaining students with Starfire Gems he had hidden away and the duty of recovering and protecting the other Starfire Gems from the forces of evil.Overall, 13 episodes isn't filling and two of its episodes are missing, despite the star power and live action magic tricks at the end of each episode. You're better off watching any other Shoujo than this. At least JCFanfics made it memorable, but you know me and shows that don't have fewer than 25 episodes...
#3 - Blazing Dragons - Well now noblemen, if you think those last two didn't have enough Middle Ages elements, haveth I got good news for thou! This here's a series made by Nelvana in 1997 (Fun Fact: One of the executive producers for this series was Terry Jones of Monty Python fame! ...I think.) that is both underrated AND could've done better. Why's that you ask? You'll find out after this synopsis: In the kingdom of Camelhot, King Allfire and the Knights of the Square Table go on quests and protect their castle from danger. It’s mainly based around Flicker, a bright young dragon who hopes to become a knight one day. He serves as a squire to one of Camelhot's noble knights, Sir Loungelot. His name speaks for himself, and is in love with the beautiful young Princess Flame (who loves him in return.) And it’s just a bunch of fun filled adventures of the dragons from Camelhot, as well as Flicker and Loungelot (alongside fellow dragon knights Sir Burnavere the Overly Educated and Sir Blaze the Smartly Dressed) trying to defend Camelhot from the infamous Count Geoffrey, his associate Merle the wizard, and his evil knights 1, 2, and 3. That's the gist of it!
Now, to why this is both underrated AND why it could've done better. In Season 1, it followed simplistics and had its creativity being traditional with similar animation style to Flying Rhino Junior High. But when Season 2 came around... it got screwed! For one, they changed the animation style (but kept the original style for the intro), and two, they demoted the 24-minute length to two separate 12-minute episodes. That eventually came back to haunt them before imploding, but not before achieving the watchability status of 26 full episodes total, not counting the 12-minute ones, which were a part of it, and got smushed into individual episodes as part of the show's run. Also, you might be wondering... why are the dragons anthro? Well, it's because of a simple copyright claim that Nelvana and Ellipse got into, where they worked at the same time for the series, but never together. Still, it's a truly underrated series!
#2 - Redwall - So nice, we're doin' it twice, here's another Nelvana collaboration between Canada and France. Oh, and Great Britain and Germany. This series, based off of the young adult novels by Brian Jacques, this takes place in a medieval world where everyone is some sort of mammal or other woodland creature. Primarily, rodents. This series has three seasons, telling a saga of a noble hero of Redwall. But, I'm gonna tell you Season 1's plot behind its tale. First off, it's about a 13-year-old mouse named Matthias. A decade ago, he lost his family when Cluny the Scourge and his gang of marauding rats burned their village and killed his family. Matthias managed to escape in fear before passing out in the cold. He was then brought to a place called Redwall Abbey thanks to a badger named Constance. During Matthias's life, he made friends in Redwall such as Cornflower, Brother Alf, and Father Abbot. But what intruiged Matthias most of all was the recent voice he's been hearing of a legendary warrior named Martin. Since Father Abbot disapproved of violence, he taught Matthias to be a good boy. One night however, Cluny returned in the flesh and infiltrated Redwall as an innocent. During the situation, Matthias could take no longer and said the words that Martin the Warrior told him as the noble code: "I am that is!" (Factoid: The code "I am that is" is an anagram of Matthias. Clever, right?) And thus, Matthias now has a burden to bear where he will now follow Martin's footsteps as the new hero. And as Children of Bodom would say "If you want peace, prepare for war." In case you're wondering, Season 2 follows a tale of Matthias's son, Mattimeo, while Season 3 follows the story of Martin the Warrior. All in all, this is a masterpiece, but with one major setback - even though this is a very dark series, the battles didn't have enough realism. I would/wouldn't consider it a dumbdown or a nerf, but they had to make it for young audiences somehow. But despite that, it's a truly amazing adventure!
#1 - Radiant - "People are not born human. They become human."
So... I've always been interested in this anime and to see if it's interesting or not. Trust me, from what I've gathered, it's got plenty of elements inspired by Hunter X Hunter and Black Clover. Even though this is technically an anime, the manga was actually created by Tony Valente, a Frenchman! (Lots of partially French works this showcase...) Hey, the Japanese will just let any nationality make a manga these days... Anyway, the synopsis: Seth is an aspiring sorcerer from the Pompo Hills area. Like all wizards, he is an “infected,” one of the few living beings who survived the contact of the Nemesis—creatures fallen from the sky that contaminate and decimate all those they touch. Being immune to them, Seth wants to become a Hunter and fight the Nemesis. But more than that, Seth wants to engage in a quest that goes beyond the simple hunt for monsters. He wants to find the Radiant, their presumed cradle. Aided by a faction of fellow sorcerers, he travels the world in search of the Radiant, under the harsh scrutiny of the Inquisition. Overall, a pretty good series! But be warned - like D. Gray-man and Soul Eater, it tends to lose taste in plot later on. There is a Funimation dub for it, and for those who like Hunter X Hunter and Black Clover, or like neither but still want elements from those two series, Radiant might be your ticket! Also, the awesome intro is abound: [Utopia]
