Template by KingZanderSanchez-iHey guys, it's Towers-of-Obscure, and welcome to Revisitedecember 4! This year... we're gonna start with something different. For the first two weeks, it's showcases of shows from BOTH Revisitedecember 1 and 2... before we move on to a "Twelve Days of Christmas" style countdown beginning on the 19th and ending on the day before New Years' Eve. So without further ado, it's time to remaster once again.
#6 - Z-Squad - Starting off, I want you to open up your Nelvana 101 textbooks. Okay... I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING! Yeah, it still sucks. Yeah, its voice acting can do better, all though the theme song is surprisingly rockin'. Yeah, it still needed development at the time given its wasted potential... but now it's become upgraded from "one of the worst things I've ever seen in my life" to a guilty pleasure, after Channeleven said I should be more cautious when trying not to vent all my anger out on a show. Besides, I can't stay upset at the legend that is Alyson Court for long, now can I? (Unless that show is Grojband.) Besides, there are worse Nelvana shows out there. Even if this 2006 mindtrip was imported from South Korea, where it was known as The Fairies of the Crystals: Z-Squad. But what's it about, you may ask? Well, it all starts when three girls - Chaney (Alyson Court), Haemi (Ashley Botting), and Jeanie (Sunday Muse), find a spellbook in Jeanie's grandfather's manor. Why were they looking for mystical powers? Simple - their reps were tarnished by the new students, the DDG3 (Zachary Bennett, Lyon Smith, Tyrone Savage). Not only are they new students with incredible athletic and academic abilities, they also got huge egos and a belief that "boys are good at everything and girls are only good at admiring boys"! Seriously, is that sexist or what?! Anyways, while flipping through the spellbook, Jeanie finds a spell that will give her and her friends the greatest power in the universe. After reciting an incantation and signing a contract a la Puella Magi Madoka Magica, the next thing that happened is a strange star shower... and then three belt buckles appeared, complete with little friends (named Zora, Zeff, and Zuma). And that's when the three girls met the wise Woolaf (Dwayne Hill). He told the girls that once they signed the contract, they accidentally stripped Prince Aramis (Noah Cappe) of his power, allowing the wicked lord Bakoo (Martin Roach) to conquer the interdimensional planet of Z-Nation. The crystals inside the mega belt of the unconcious Aramis have spread free into the girls' world, lying dormant until its wicked Zoot is awakened, courtesy of Bakoo's scheming moll, Grindel (Melissa Altro). Harnessing their courage, love, and hope (as well as a bit of age progression) when the Zoots rise and freeze time within, the girls become the Z-Squad and must triumph in the battle where Aramis has fallen, in their quest to reclaim the crystals. And believe me - they're gonna need all the strength they got, if they haven't misused it pre-battle during their rivalry with the DDG3! The dub's episodes are a bit all over the place, almost nigh irregular like the 4Kids Tokyo Mew Mew dub. But like I said, there are worse shows out there, even though it was just a Korean duplicate attempt of another forgotten magical girl saga at the time, Powerpuff Girls Z. It's on Tubi, but you can also check it out on the YouTube channel TVShoaz, or if you just want a Korean raw (like you would ever need it), its episodes are split into two parts on the channel known as "SpaceCops", as recommended by my friend Pluszaczek .
#5 - Egyxos - Okay, moving on from a show that I now considered a guilty pleasure to... one that I don't. Say hello once again to Egyxos - an Italian cartoon made in 2015 that tried to make anachronisms with ancient Egypt, but failed in the process. Here's how it goes: Leo Walker is a 9th grader who wants to be a hotshot basketball player and is always a constant bully victim. One day, while visiting a museum, he finds a strange artifact called Ra's Bracelet, and soon, he is attacked by a servant of the wicked Anubis. However, the bracelet somehow knew to defend him, and know he's wound up an alternate dimension called Egyxos to manifest and strengthen his powers as "the Last Pharaoh". Leo is trained by Kefer to become a warrior of Egyxos, and is sworn to stop Anubis, and Kefer's malevolent brother, Exoton. Personally, translation and writing was lackluster and is mediocre at best. You're better off watching Mummies Alive, Tutenstein, or any other cartoon that uses Egyptian anachronisms than this. But at least you have to give it credit sometimes because it actually handled Egyptian mythology better than Gods of Egypt, and they kept the residents of Egyxos as POC. Other than that... best skip this venture with a bland protagonist.
#4 - Zak Storm - Alright, we're all familiar with this show called Miraculous Ladybug, now aren't we? Although it has a lot of great support for six years and counting, I myself find it overrated and bad. Simply because of basic suit designs, predictable villain setups (that Code Lyoko executed better), and a nonsensical two-person love square. Other than that, you should know that the ZAG franchise is more than just that (which in my opinion, are all better than Miraculous Ladybug). There's also Power Players, GhostForce, and this sunken treasure from the depths of 2017. Alternatively known as Zak Storm: Super Pirate, the titular character of this series is a pre-teen surfer and wannabe internet superstar. One fateful day, after 'borrowing' his father's necklace, a strange portal from the water arises, and Zak is transported to the Bermuda Triangle. He then arrives on a hi-tech pirate ship called the Chaos, and befriends a technical not ghost named Clovis. After being attacked by Golden Bones, the right-hand skeleton of Lord Skullivor, Zak finds Calabrass, a talking sword who was formerly human, and is supposed to be the Great Key of the Bermuda Triangle. In order to return home, Zak must find individual locks and keys within the Triangle's Seven Seas. Although Skullivor claims himself to rule the Seven Seas, no one truly rules them, and perhaps Zak But Zak cannot do this alone. He is also partnered up with Carumba, an alien engineer who is adjusting to the human language, and Cece (full name: Crysta Coralyne LeJune), an Atlantean princess who is accompanied by her Viking bodyguard, Crogar. How many episodes do you get with those scenarios? 39 exactly, my friend! All the better to cross the Seven Seas with!
#3 - Tommy & Oscar - Psst! Can I let you in a little secret? Did you know that Rainbow executive producer Iginio Straffi created a cartoon even when Winx Club was still in its early drafts? It's actually true with this 1999 obscurity. The story begins when a kid named Tommy, who lives with his genius professor uncle Leonard, finds a pink space alien who crashed his ship in his backyard. The alien's name is revealed to be Oscar, and oddly enough, Oscar eats exactly what any unlikely alien like him would eat - music! Only in cartoons. The two go on bizarre adventures, alongside Peter, a music shop owner, and Yukari, Tommy's classmate and friend who is a self-trained martial artist. Occasionally, on those adventures, they encounter Caesar, a corrupt bigwig businessman with his two imbicile-like gorilla henchmen, Ork and Dork. Also, if you haven't seen those antagonists, you might think it could've caused controversy with Caesar and his gorillas having unlit cigars in their mouths. But does that really matter? Overall, this is a very comical show if you can get the handle of it the right way, despite having an almost similar animation style to late 90s monarchs Humongous Entertainment. Not all the episodes are present on KimCartoon, and the show's not even on WatchCartoonOnline either. However, if you do have Tubi on your Roku, it's right there, complete with all 52 revised episodes that really give a whole new meaning to "space jam"!
#2 - Time Warp Trio - As I said before, Egyxos doesn't stand a chance to other Egyptian mythology based cartoons such as Tutenstein. Speaking of Tutenstein, ask anyone about the Discovery Kids cartoons and they'll tell you that they were awesome too! ( pharrel3009 in particular.) Prior to Tutenstein, its animation arsenal consisted of Kenny the Shark, Grossology, Growing Up Creepie, The Future is Wild... and the best one of them all made in 2005, based off of the books by Jon Sciezska and Lane Smith! Here's how it goes: On his 11th birthday, a kid named Joe (Mark Rendall) recieves a present from his eccentric magician Uncle Joe. It came with a note that read "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it." The present was a strange book pathetically titled "The Book". His friends, Sam (Darren Frost) and Fred (Scott McCord), decided to check it out with him. All of a sudden, a strange green mist begins to emit from the book, allowing the boys to travel to any point in history without rewriting history itself! Along the way, they sometimes run into their genderbent counterparts - Jodie, Samantha, and Freddie (Sarah Gadon, Laurie Elliot, Sunday Muse) from the year 2105 on their adventures. This changed a lot from the book series, but also kept some core themes to it as well, like the lesser known parts history. For instance, the Vikings never had Thursday in their calendars, Native Americans such as Sacajawea used bear spit as hair gel, and members of Genghis Khan's horde often sniffed each other as a greeting. Long story short, this series is the definition of historical anachronisms! (Well, second best... may I remind you Legends of the Hidden Temple still reigns supreme.) If you haven't checked out any of the Discovery Kids cartoons, you should. Even though you might have to go to YouTube to watch this fully, I recommend this above all as one time trippin' ride you won't forget!
#1 - Magic Knight Rayearth - Is this deja vu or what? The first time I reviewed Time Warp Trio was in a showcase, and this show came after that. Then in the first Revisitedecember, this show was the final show whereas Time Warp Trio was released on day 12. I love both of these series equally, and it is definitely an honor to review them once again! Even though this anime outshined it once again... nevertheless, this anime saga was made by the legendary CLAMP in 1994, about a few years before they put out one of my all time favorite anime, Cardcaptor Sakura, and was also released during the time Sailor Moon was becoming a phenomenon with the Dic dub still taking off. As the story goes... three 8th grade girls: Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, are transported to a magical world called Cephiro during a field trip to Tokyo Tower. They are soon greeted by Master Mage Clef, who explains to them that they have been summoned to become the Legendary Magic Knights and save Cephiro. The girls are less than enthusiastic about this idea, and only want to return home. Well, Umi specifically and only. The reason why Cephiro is in danger is because the High Priest Zagato has imprisoned the hope of Cephiro, Princess Emeraude, and her prayers brought our three heroines to the situation they're currently in. After bestowing unique armor and magical powers to them, Clef tells them that in order to truly become the Magic Knights, they must revive the Rune Gods. If these girls ever want to get back home, this is the only road that they'll follow, meeting new allies along the way. And eventually in the second season, they return to Cephiro to face a new foe that not only threatens Cephiro, but their world as well! But no matter how hard their worlds crumble, they'll rely on friendship and loyalty to keep the magic alive! Overall, it's a good Shoujo anime that eventually, like Street Sharks, started a long trend of similarites from its base concept. Some weren't good, though (cough Wedding Peach cough), but if you haven't checked a Shoujo out but aren't ready to dive into the length of Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure, this is a very excellent start. CLAMP are true anime queens, and I respect them with all my heart!
