Description
Yeah, this time I'm not just doing this to be lazy but I figure you guys wouldn't let me sit on my ass for days or even weeks waiting to break 100,000 Pageviews (I'm really close to breaking those numbers, I'd like to thank all my fans and everyone who got me to this point--I seriously can't thank you enough for getting me this far). Instead, just a bunch of quick reviews that I either don't have enough to say about for a full review or just can't piece together in any kind of satisfactory way; keep in mind, these are in no particular order. Let's go!6) The Mad Doctor (Vintage Cases): this is one of the reviews I had planned for October when I wanted to do a bunch of vintage animation reviews and stuff but its not hard to find footage this old, the template I ended up going with was a little too ambitious and it would've ended up being a bit annoying to write the entire review (usually I just use MS-Paint for this since it's not like I need anything fancy) and then throw a filter over it on Photoshop, and it would've been difficult to find too many candidates for this without just playing it safe and sticking to stuff from the 70's & 80's for reviews. Anyway, this cartoon is about Pluto getting kidnapped by the Mad Doctor (who I'm betting most of you only recognize as that guy who worked with the Phantom Blot in Epic Mickey) to be used in his evil experiments and the visuals used are surprisingly dark for a Disney cartoon, with Pluto about to be vivisected to have his head put on the body of a chicken and Mickey strapped to a table about to cut open with a buzzsaw like something out of a Saw film. Yeah...I can see why this would be kept buried.
5) Holly Hobbie & Friends (Thoughts): Yeah, I sorta did come around on this one. I don't hate it as much as my Advent Calendar review would lead you to believe, but it's just a nice, simple series. I understand this about in the same way I can understand why people would like Full House: there's not much here, but it's comforting and sometimes you just need a show that'll let you turn off your brain, not give you anything challenging to think about, and just give you some small moment of happiness. It's like a caramel, straight sugar that doesn't hurt anyone unless you have too much of it. I can't say much else about this one but it's kinda charming, has a very smooth, colorful artstyle, and just an innocent feel to it. I'd say it's better than Strawberry Shortcake or even Bratz but you're really just comparing apples to apples with this.
4) Neo Yokio (Anime Unknown/Animation Infamy): I've probably read the "plot" summary for this thing three different times and I STILL think that only Jayden Smith can tell you what it's even about. I'm gonna try anyway: so, this pink haired guy named Kazz is a super-famous eligible bachelor/demon hunter (because those two things go together, like a vampire hunter accountant or a dragon-slayer lawyer) who has a robot butler, and they live in a super-futuristic city...and that's all I got. I don't even know if this is Anime! Because I'm not even sure what this is! When this hit Netflix, everyone had two responses to it: either "What the fuck am I watching?!" or uncontrollable laughter. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a parody of anime or if this is what Jayden Smith thinks anime is; then again, this is the same kid who said stupid shit on Twitter like "You can learn all the secrets of the universe just by looking at your hands" and released a rap album, no really, where he compared himself to Maleficent and George Jefferson in the same sentence. Either way, it's...I can't.
3) Unikitty Cartoon (Thoughts): I did have plans to release a First Impressions or Thoughts card on this one, but I just kept putting it off and putting it off, but I feel I should give my piece here. If you've read my review of the special preview we got for the series, then you should know that I'm still very optimistic about this cartoon. It's fun, it's cute, and it can actually be pretty funny, and it might even be able to kill Teen Titans Go. I know that we've been hoping that about everything from OK KO to Infinity Train to Villainous, but the thing is, most of the crew from TTG actually jumped ship to work on this. Fingers crossed TTG goes up in smoke this year or next. Regardless, the show follows the adorable Princess Unikitty, her little brother Prince Puppycorn, and their friends Dr. Fox, Hawkodile, and Richard. Pretty basic stuff so far, but it really helps having a bouncy, upbeat main character who's just so delightful and happy. Surprisingly, the TTG style of wacky humor works a lot better here because it's not as jarring and they're working with brand new characters to play with rather than dragging pre-existing ones through the mud.
2) Black Clover (Anime Unknown): yeah I said that I wanted to START the year with this. Ultimately, though, I just don't think I have enough to say about it. I really wanted to get the haters to shut up about this series, saying it was the WORST anime to come out last year; yeah, in a year with Hand Shakers, SAO: Ordinal Scale, and Berserk 2016. Calm the fuck down, people. To describe this series, it's like a cross between My Hero Academia and Fairy Tail, with maybe a pinch of Naruto. The premise is that two brothers are sent to a church as babies, one grows up to be an incredibly powerful mage and the other dreams of being the Wizard King; the problem is the latter, our main hero Asta, has absolutely no magical ability in a world where EVERYONE has magic power of some kind. When his powerful brother Yuno receives the Four Leaf Clover spell tome (the same one used by the original Wizard King), Asta swears to become his rival and rise above him before gaining his own FIVE Leaf Clover spell tome with the power to cancel any magic thrown his way. Honestly, I never got the shit people threw at this series (the anime isn't a great adaptation, but the manga is actually outselling even MHA): it's too similar to the style of the Big Three? Yeah, what's wrong with that? Naruto had a strong start, and One Piece has managed to remain evergreen and original after over two decades. It's too cliche and stock for a shonen series? Guys, even your golden boy HeroAca has it's own share of shonen tropes; it's all about presentation. There's a flashback in Episode 2? ...So? Asta's Japanese VA is really annoying? That's why I watch the dub. Is this a GREAT series? Well, the anime is a bit shaky at first but I'd recommend it.
1) Jimmy Two-Shoes (Animation Unknown): I've been thinking of doing this one for a while now, but I don't know if I have enough to say about it. Both this and Kid vs. Kat are the first things I saw on Disney XD and really took me back to a more nostalgic time since they felt so familiar and just like the cartoons I had growing up as a kid. That's not a bad thing, in fact I sorta enjoy this show. The basic idea is that Jimmy is a boy who (somehow) ends up in the town of Miseryville, run by the evil Lucius Heinous, who seeks to make all the citizens in town as miserable as possible. Jimmy, however, befriends Lucius's idiot son Beezy and attracts the attention of Helouise, an extremely brilliant and evil scientist who works for Lucius at his company Misery Inc. Jimmy causes hijinks and spreads joy and optimism with his best friend Beezy, completely failing to notice Helouise's crush on him, you've seen this before. It doesn't feel cliche like Scaredy Squirrel, but it feels familiar like this is someone's version of a similar show like Camp Lazlo or Spongebob in the same way as Cuphead is a throwback to vintage cartoons of the 1930's or The Wedding Singer is an homage/satire of the 80's. That's just the way I see it, and I kinda think it's fun and enjoyable for what it is. Yeah, it's stupid but cartoons can just be cartoons and that's okay too. I'm happy that we can live in a world where story-driven series like Star vs. FoE and Steven Universe can co-exist with episodic stuff like Gumball and The Loud House.

Allow me to comparisonize #2 with Mysticons: People say that Mysticons was the worst cartoon of 2017 - Say the people who got hooked on Ninja Steel and yet believed Nickelodeon was decaying and this was a Canadian import. I say to them - shut up! Sure it has Miraculous-style masks, and yes, it even has magic upgrade elements like LoliRock, but I find Mysticons giving Miraculous a run for its money. It doesn't beat LoliRock, but it's still great.

Yeah, that’s true. I’ve never seen Mysticons but I’d be willing to give it a fair shot since I didn’t think Ever After High would be any good until I saw that.

I agree with Black Clover, I love that manga and I was happy to see it get an anime. I was pretty surprised to see all the negative comments on crunchyroll about it because they seem REALLY harsh on such a new series.

Right? I've never read the manga but I'm guessing this is one of those things like Percy Jackson where people hate the adaptation so much because of how good the original source is. I'm willing to bet that it only gets a season or two at most before vanishing while the manga keeps on trucking.

If you were going to boil it down to the most basic description you'd probably say "it's like Naruto, but with magic instead of ninjas." Though someone might cry Bleach comparison because of the grimoires being like Zanpakto in some ways. But the MC is unique enough (I'd kind of say he's more like Rock Lee) and even the rival guy has traits that differentiate him from being a full on Sasuke. It's familiar enough as a typical shonen anime but unique enough that I wouldn't call it a knock off of anything specific. Also I'm only a few episodes in but from what I've seen they're following the manga pretty faithfully, the extended flashback in the second episode which I think is the major source of fan rage is an anomaly that hasn't been repeated so far.

What are your thoughts on the 2nd season of Jimmy Two Shoes (it had a noticeable shift in animation quality and characters)?

These are my overall thoughts on (what I remember) about the series. I also have My Thoughts on The Replacements and Chalk Zone on my to do list but I eventually scrapped the Replacements one; if you want my thoughts there, I was not a fan of the art change.

Yeah, we didn't really need a Unikitty cartoon but it's not too bad so I'm okay with it. We also didn't need Total Drama Daycare and yet...
