HALO THREE CHRONICALS

-Before the storm -

Re-enforced, ammo topped up and ready a hell for the next round you drove the Chopper in front of the LVR Warthog that Chief was riding in. The atmosphere was heavy as we drove through the tunnel, but that can easily be said when you are apart of a convoy of warthogs and soldiers armed to the teeth. You could see the tunnels opening closing in and on que Commander Keyes radios in with the mission. "Chief, the Prophet of Truth has found the Ark. Our only chance of stopping him is a surprise aerial assault. Clear this sector of Covenant anti-air defences. Make a hole for the Admiral’s ships. Good hunting. Keyes out."  She instructed quickly before signing off.

“Always strait to the point.” You say softly as the two warthogs ahead moved to the left and they started to climb off and move towards the door. The soldiers signalled you to park and do the same, groaning you park and leave the chopper.

“Just so you know, we can hear you cadet.” Keyes voice called over the radio.

“C-crap... I-I didn’t mean any offence ma’am.” You reply jumping slightly. A heavy hand clasped your right shoulder and pushed you to the remaining warthog. Climbing up into the passengers seat you looked over your shoulder to see Chief moving to take point. Honestly, was Chief purposely trying to protect you… or seriously trying to hog all the fun and piss you off? At least you got some of the fun as the team slowly moved through the halls. The driver next to you had a big smile on his face and chuckled whenever he mowed down a grunt.

"Kilo 23, this is UNSC Forward Unto Dawn. I need a sit-rep, Commander." Lord Hood checked in as we moved outside Chief was already down on the river bed taking out the wraiths that were there.

"Atmospheric disturbances is intensifying above The Artefact, Admiral." Keyes answered

"And Sierra-117?" Lord hood asked

"Moving as fast as he can, sir. I know he’ll get it done." Keyes replied just as Chief demolished the second wraith. Johnson radioed in telling us to keep moving forward and as usual chief was already up there taking of the newly dropped Wrath. The driver of the warthog had decided to try to drive up the ramp and fly over just like Chief did, although it didn’t go according to plan. So as we headed into the next area, we left a warthog parked it the perfectly fitted gap. Walking into the next area you catch a glimpse of a plasma grenade exploding, running up the stairs and catching up with Chief you see a few Marines left.

“We’re down to our last mags, sir. Thought those last ones had us.” A woman spoke as we passed her. Taking a deep breath you reloaded the last clip of your ammo into your Magnum, hopefully you’d be able to reach the ammo stash soon.

"We've got a Phantom, overhead!" A marine yelled, moving quickly you all entered the next area just in time for the Buggy Drones to smash through the glass and start to swarm all over the place. You felt your eyebrow twitch as you struggled to take them out, Chief (as per usual) had no trouble wiping out the horde and quickly ushered everyone to continue on. Chief slowed down for a few seconds before resuming. Finding a weapon rack to quickly stock up on ammo and also stuff your bag with plenty of spare clips.

“Mount up, Rockets in back!” The same Marine from earlier stated as they started climbing up onto the Mongooses that were waiting there. The space behind chief was empty so you climbed up, sliding the Magnum into the bag you see chief’s helmet ‘looking’ in your direction. Turning to look behind you to see no one you failed to realise Chief quickly reach forward to give you a little ‘nudge’ and taking hold of the accelerator he speed off. Muttering a string of curses under your breath you sit up slowly just in time to hear the laughter of the marines as they quickly followed the Chiefs lead. Looking around you see three soldiers jog there way over to you, the first was quick to offer a hand to help you up. Taking his offer you were haled to your feet, they waisted no time pushing you out the door and along the outside of the battle grounds where you could see Chief with a soldier holding a rocket launcher working on taking out the Second Anti-air Wraith. You could feel their hands on your back as they continued to lead you where the Missile Pods were set up. Hearing an explosion you caught a glimpse of a blue explosion down in the lakebed.

“Orders are for you to stay here!” You hear one of your escorts shout over the blasts of the Missile pods nearby as they pushed you to stand next to one of the elevators before running off to join the fight. The coms flared up with Johnsons voice as another loud explosion visible from your position,

“Bot AA Wraiths have been neutralized… Standby. Something big, closing in on your location.” Johnsons voice called over the radio right on que, the missile pods became silent as the fight seemed to have been over but you knew better. The grinding of metal told you all you needed to know long before Johnson had even spoken over the radio.

“What’s that sound?” You hear the Marine stationed across from you ask as his focus was out in the field where only a few warthogs remained in tacked. A long shiver ran up your spine as an idea crossed your mind.

“Scarab! Find some cover. Now!” with the new threat drawing closer to your location, what was left of the current human forces scrambled to the nearest Missile pods or hid behind what little cover they could find just as the Scarab lumbers drown from the roof of the factory onto the lakebed destroying one of the few warthogs with its legs.

“We’ll try and draw its fire. Use rockets! Target its joints!” The marine shouted order but as you lifted your hand you could no longer see it.

“WHERE THE HELL IS THE KID?!” you hear a soldier shout as he dives for cover just as the Scarab blasts to your left.

“It’s armour is to thick!” One of the troopers yelled just as their warthog was about to be destroyed.

“He was here a second ago!” Another replied firing at the Scarab. Moving backwards slowly you press the button for the lift, rushing in you quickly rose to the top to move forward and crouch. Moving forward with caution, you made to the edge of the crane. The scarab had moved to just below you, taking a deep breath you prepare to jump. For the few moments you were air born there was nothing, but reality is a real piece of ass and as you neared the scarabs upper body you rolled just as you collided with its upper body.

“There! The Kid’s on the Scarab!” You could hear a collective ‘what!’ called over the Coms. Moving as quickly as possible you manage to take out the Grunts along the side but there just had to be a chief Brute waiting for you as you reached the power core.

“Fresh meat.” He growled swinging his Gravity hammer at you. Jumping back you manage to evade the Brute’s first few strikes and as he raised the hammer to strike you down, you quickly roll aside as the hammer crashes through the protective shield. The alarm started blearing off, you quickly jump off as the scarab lowers itself and shakes uncontrollably.

“Get clear!” you yell as the charge sounds off and even though you were clear of the blast range, the small shockwave knocked you off balance. The slight ringing in your ears was unpleasant as you rose to your feet slowly, looking over your shoulder you could see what was left of the scarab after the explosion. There was two mongooses left after the explosion, Chief was clearly driving one as the made their way over to you. The words ‘ I’m in deep trouble ’ ran through your mind as they got closer.

“Well done, Chief! I’m sending in a few pelicans.” Keyes radioed in and for once you decided to keep your mouth shut as Chief pulled up beside you. Not even waiting for you to sit properly, Chief speeds back to the ramp just as a set of re-enforcements pull in, including the Arbiter.

"One more target, Chief. There’s a Covenant AA gun in the next area. Take it down and Lord Hood can start his attack run." Sergeant Johnson radioed in and just like that we all walked down the pathway and headed through the large steal doors. The door locked firmly behind us as we all made our way through the factory.

"We've got this area locked down, sir. Follow us, we’ll get you through." A marine stated as she led the way through the dirty walled section, the sound of the marines and civilians as they were tending to the wounded.

"Ahh! Somebody, get me some morphine!" One of the wounded yelled as he clutched his ribs, his eyes were closed as the pain flared through him. Those not tending to those in pain were setting up more sandbag walls or operating the only UNSC field radio that they had.

"All Brute cruisers are pulling back to Truth’s ship. Winds inside the storm just hit 200 kilometres per hour. Energy cascades all over the artefact!" The news blasted through the radio as chief signalled for you to hurry up. As you reached Chief the communications blared up with chatter.

"Admiral, a single Covenant ship has slipped in-system!" Keyes spoke.

"Just one? What's its range and disposition?" Lord Hood replied

"Above the artefact, inside the orbital line. Seems to be holding steady." Keyes informed Lord hood.

"The attack proceeds as planned, Commander. We’re not going to get another shot at Truth." Lord Hood ordered.

"Sir. Yes, sir." Keyes ended the radio chat. The Arbiter and Chief moved onward

Moving through the factory and into the warehouse, you were immediately shoved back as brutes laid heavy fire heavy fire at the trio of marines that were pinned behind a stack of sandbags as spiker bullets fly through the air. After you were down, Chief ran towards the gunfire leaving you well protected behind the sandbag wall. Growling you position yourself  so you could just see over the top of the sandbag wall. Chief and Arbiter were both engaged in battle with the brutes further ahead and up on a steel bridge, two Marines were firing the machine gun franticly as they were gaining the upper hand in this fight. Moving forward not that the brutes were taken care of you make your way over to chief just as a second wave of brutes charge forward to the machine gun.

“We’ve got company!” a marine yelled as a small force of brutes charges from the next station. Slowly closing in on the bridge the machine gun starts firing again making quick work of them.

Moving forward chief took the lead where the Arbiter stayed close to you, turning a corner you see Chief quickly charge forward to save a construction worker at the mercy of a Brute as three other workers armed with Pistols flee from the Brute to the safety of the marines.

“Kill them for honour!” The brutes yells before throwing the construction worker away just in time for chief to land a head shot on him. You quickly help the construction worker to his feet and guided him to his co-workers, “GO! Get to safety!” you yell pointing in the direction that you came from, you could only hope that they made it out before… shaking your head you quickly moved onward to see chief slowly moving around the corpses that lied on the factories floor the few that were still alive were quickly lead off by one of the marines. Walking behind chief you could just see the door that leads to outside but as the pain in the ass thing called fate would have it, massive beams of green energy fly inside and blow up the fusion coils nearby. Chief shoves you back as he quickly goes off to handle the situation and taking a little more time than usual chief once again saves the day.

Running past the hunter corpses and through the opened door you see several low-roofed building and a nice little welcoming party, taking up arms you and the rest of the group quickly open fire on the unknowing Covernant forces making quick work of them. And just after the Prophet of Truth sends another message through the pedestal in front of you.

"Darkened skies and lashing fire are all that remains for them when we, the worthy, have passed beyond." The Prophet says only for the Arbiter to reply in outrage, claming that he would never fall for their tricks again.

Just a little bit further and you could see it, the massive anti-aircraft gun stood tall up…. Up the damn hill… sighing you reload your just in time to take out the grunts that started running down the slope. Midway up the slope was the plasma cannon turret guarded by a war Chieftain brute. And just as chief takes them both out a UNSC ship is destroyed, it catches on fire as it falls down to the cliffs below.

"Chief! Hood's ships are closing fast! Destroy that gun; we’re out of time." Keyes radioed in just as the last few of the hostiles were being dealt with.

"Chief, that gun’s been firing non-stop: it’s gotta be running hot! It’s gonna be opening up its access panel!" Sergeant Johnson radioed as Chief shot the last one. Now standing below the lower section of the Anti-aircraft you could see the lower section open up to reveal the white sphere and with no hesitation you open fire, several other people join in and together the sphere is destroyed. You watched as the upper section fall down the cliff and chief stands next to you. You watch the UNSC aircrafts fly overhead followed closely by the three UNSC frigates, one of which is Forward Unto Dawn herself.

“All ships fire at will!” Lord Hood commands and they all oblige to his order, the blasts from the cannons eco through the vally but it makes little impact against the dreadnought's surface, the forerunner structure begins to open as the dreadnought lowers onto the structure and the energy beam begins to focus on it which only glows bigger and expands. A shockwave was sent from the tower sending everyone flying back, you are lucky to be only thrown back by the force, chief on the other hand flies back against the rocks behind you. Shaking it off you rise to your feet to see the portal sphere swirling in the sky above the artefact and both the UNSC and the Covernant ships drifting in the sky as the artefact rises to the portal so do the Covernant ships as they correct themselves.

"(coughs) What did Truth just do? (coughs) Did he activate the rings?" Lord hood called over the radio as the ships slowly started correcting themselves

"No, sir. But he certainly did something..." Commander Keyes answered, The Arbiter roared angerly as the Covenant fleet flies through the sphere.

"Evac wounded and regroup. Wherever Truth went-" Lord Hood started but another voice cut him off stating that a new ship was approaching. A shiver travelled down your spine as you turned to see the rancid ship flew overhead to crash somewhere behind you out of your sight. Everything was silent  as a flash of light followed by a deep rumbling sound.

"What is it? More Brutes?" Arbiter asked approaching the two of you

"Worse." Chief answered reloading his gun.
