Description
Here is a drawing of the Projectionist from Bendy and the Ink Machine Chapter 3 that I have been working on for a while. Well at least around after Chapter 3 came out. I didn’t really get too involved in the fandom like my friends, but I am slightly more involved because of this specific character. In all honesty, I still don’t actually pay attention to it much. BUT I have been paying attention to the Projectionist. Majority of my attention is pointed towards Norman. I really love this character, I really love his design. The Game reminds me of Bioshock on so many levels now, and the Projectionist reminds me of a Big Daddy. A Bioshock 2 Rumbler to be specific. Just without the rockets, mini turrets, and little sister while sounding like Songbird with a lower pitch screech. Also not only that but I really love Object headed characters. So when my friend made me play chapter 3 on release day for them and I first saw this character when listening to Wally’s audio log, it piqued my interest. Also one of my responses is to it was “Do I have to fight that?!” like how I reacted to seeing a Big Daddy in Bioshock 1 for the first time when the game first came out. Then when it came down to it having to go to level 14 later on, I was able to take him down with a pipe the exact same way I would do in Bioshock 1 with only a wrench. Although when I did finally kill him and I got the achievement, I was not prepared to find out who he was. When I listened to his audio log on level 14, I didn’t think anything of it. So when I got the achievement, I was caught off guard. I was really sad afterwards and regretting my decision. So the 2nd time playing after my friend told me It was possible to get the tommy gun, when I did get the tommy gun, I could not bring myself to shoot Norman. I just couldn’t hurt him. I didn’t want to so I let him be. Anyways…
I spent lots of time on this drawing now that info up top is out of the way, time to explain what I did and stuff when drawing this picture:
I wanted to draw the Projectionist. I did go back to level 14 in game to see how he moved and to get a good picture on what he looks like. It was somewhat difficult because it was pretty dark and he wanders all over the place. At the time, there were no good references to look for. The pictures were too dark and I couldn’t use them and there weren’t any screenshots of him. I had to take matters in my own hands and replay the game a few times just to get a decent depiction. This also goes for the background and area as well.
The background was just as hard. The differences though was that there was absolutely no screenshots of level 14. Luckily when checking out the Projectionist, I also paid attention to the area and atmosphere. And some of the minor details.
I used 7 different kinds of black inks, 2 different kinds of sepia inks, 3 different kinds of white ink, 5 different packets of colored pencils, and 12 year aged paper from an old sketch book I found after losing it as a kid. I used fountain pens, dip pens, and brush pens instead of my normal pens. Despite not being too experienced with inks and differents pens and brushes. I also used my blacklight pen as well.
When I started sketching, I had a pose that I wanted in my head. I thought of the lighting and stuff and how I was to do it. Although when it came down to sketching his projector/head, the direction he was suppose to be looking at did not click with me and I ended up drawing him looking in the direction he is now in the picture. He was originally suppose to look off to the side and down but like I said, that did not click. I ended up sketching him looking at the viewer with his head turned slightly like he just decided to turn and look up just before he is about to Screech and pummel Henry at first sight. When I made this mistake, I was already outlining and coloring him with ink and colored pencil. At that point, I knew I couldn’t fix it especially with the fragile paper I was using. The paper was a bit of a sepia aged color so fixing it with white ink wasn’t gonna help. So I stuck with the position of his head/projector.
The lighting was actually a pain. I spent a little over a week using a piece of aged paper experimenting with the different inks and colored pencils just to get good lighting. Also because the paper is aged, it is very fragile and the dip pens I use are very fine, I had to be careful not to ruin the paper in any way. The day I did figure it out was when I was at my local anime store waiting to gamers night to start, and I was hanging out with some of the other people. I was busy experimenting with the inks and colored pencils, trying different techniques and whatnot. It took me 5 hours to finally figure it out. I was so happy, until I realized the background color. I paid attention to the background, but I had to experiment with the colored pencils next. That took some time figuring out the colors and what to use for the wall lighting to make it stand out and the shading. Also blending it altogether and making it look nice. Not to mention the shadow behind the projectionist.
Drawing the background was slightly challenging but I managed. Although the poster in the background, behind the Projectionist, I had issues with. I am going to put this out, I can draw pretty complicated things depending what it is BUT something as simple as that poster, It is actually really hard for me. I can’t really draw cartoon style. I have my own style to go by but when it comes to a drawing like this, I try making it as accurate or exact as possible. It was an actual challenge for me to be honest. But I guess it turned out pretty good. When it comes to drawing the background, I involve lots of math. I involve more math when putting a character in a spot as well. This includes small details in the background. Lots of measuring and calculating. Planning how I wanted it.
Coloring in the Projectionist wasn’t too hard. I just had to go over with ink and colored pencil. The only part I didn’t work on too much or right away was the head and arm. The lighting for that took time. Trying to figure out how I was going to color his projector head took time.
I was also careful not to mess it up or ruin it in any possible way. This also included limiting my breathing and wearing goggles. There were times where I couldn’t stop yawning and my eyes would tear and burn after staring for a while. To prevent tears from falling onto the paper, I wore my steampunk goggles, I took the blue lens out and put my clear lens in so I could see what colors I was looking at. I was being very careful with this drawing. I didn’t want to ruin it and every precaution I took was worth it.
Also if you notice that one hand he has all 5 fingers, and the other hand he has 4 fingers, Don’t worry, that is not a mistake, one of the fingers you just can’t see. It’s there but you can’t see it. Just a heads up if anyone wanted to question me about that.
Also like my other pictures I favor the most, this picture does light up to black light. It was required to light up from the start. I got a better blacklight so I might post a picture of it under blacklight later.
I just so glad I finished this drawing and it turned out a lot better than I expected.

Thanks!
I worked really hard on this drawing, I was also extremely careful with this drawing. Also still being very unexperienced with using ink and stuff. I put lots of time into making sure I didn't do anything wrong. I made sure I sure I got the lighting decent, and the background colors right. I am so glad I didn't make mistakes that would have ruined it.
To get the right atmosphere and depiction for this drawing I was willing to go back in the game to doing all of the errand garbage that Alice wanted me to do over and over just to get to level 14 to look at the area I was in and to look at Norman. Although with Norman, I was able glitch him out a few times. I got pretty good references from that... I also spent a little extra time admiring him as well.
Also there were posters, projectors, and corrupted toon corpses everywhere. I just had to find a good area for the background. When I did, I had to look at the poster over and over because I couldn't find the poster online. It was pretty dark so trying to look at it was annoying. Also the fact the poster looks so easy to draw, that gave me one hell of a time. I prefer complicated over easy and that was one of the disadvantages I had. But at least it came out to my likings...
