I enjoy the concept of Trott being more like a Selkie.
So I have a head canon that his character lived in an Artic/High Northen tribe of folk called the Rostungur that had a group totem of the walrus, thus granting them the power to turn into one.
Trott of course, was brilliant, and claimed his independence at a young age. Becoming an explorer for his tribe, he headed east. But when he went to go for a swim in his walrus form, he was attacked by human hunters. He managed to retreat to shore, only to find that he could be attacked again by a savage little human boy who was raised by wolves. He turned back into his humanoid form before the savage could do anything and tried to explain to the wolf boy that they were both the same.
The wolf child introduced himself as "Roff" or... that's all he could seem to say, so Trott just called him Ross.
They became great friends and traveled together. Trott taught Ross the tongue of Rostungur and it would be a year of traveling south before they met Smiffy.
