Chapter 3: Calm before the storm
The walls within my office bring some peace with the recent events. It may have been the place where I was scared both physically and mentally but at least I know this place. I know the ring collection standing in the west side of the office, the library on the east side and my perfectly rectangular desk at the end facing the door. At least I know this place unlike my own family.
So much seemed to have happened since this morning and its just 10:20 am. And I still don’t know anything. I have I file that I can’t open, I have discover that my brother was a monster in with possibility of my entire family as well, and this morning heist was conducted by some monster in which my brother was also one. It’s simply unbelievable how much I first though I knew has now change.
I could try to ask Ronald about this but now I’m starting to believe the suspicion of John. Why Ronald would hid something from me? He’s been so nice to me, so thoughtful over the years. Why would he hid something so large like from me? But I guess the better question is he even hiding everything from me? Did he even know about this? So many questions and not a single answer in sight.
And while they calm everyone down, I’m here looking at my ring. It is such a beautiful ring but with everything, I don’t feel the satisfaction of holding it. Maybe under other condition it would be… wait a minute, I didn’t know there was writing on the ring. It looks to be German form what I can see. It’s a sham father never taught us German when we were little. Thankfully, I learn a bit while in college.
Let me see what it says. Gott mitt uns, interesting. A rough translation would be God with us, but that’s odd. I never heard my father say that phase, nor have I ever seen him go to a church. If it wouldn’t be for his Protestant funeral I could of assuming he was agnostic. But maybe there relevance to this phase. I wonder if it would work on the file. It’s not like I’m doing anything else important right now. Relocating the Pokéuman file and has it give me the pop-up for the password, I input the German phase.
To my surprise, my computer crash. The screen went black and nothing seem to working. Damn this dinosaur. I would hit my computer but I’m afraid to break it even farther. I leave my chair and relive a bit of stress by walking around until my computer comes back online. Quickly checking, it seemed to have bypass the regular windows system and open a new operating system, one named pokéuman operating system. Well I’ll be damn, it work. I explore the file noticing it only has an exe file on it. Against my better judgment, I open the programme.
The programme loaded a lot faster than I ever expected it. It was as if my computer magically became more powerful, which is something considering I haven’t change my computer ever since my brother was in charge. Soon after, a notification of the last time it was use, being September 2002. That was the last month my brother was, well fired to put it nicely. He did know what this was about then. Maybe I don’t give him enough credit; just maybe.
The programme open up with multiple different section that can be operated. All of them having no relation to this being a bank what so ever. First that caught my attention is the Factory Protocol, followed by Defence System, Intelligence Gathering, Save Data and HDF. What do they all stand for? This doesn’t make any sense. I try to search more but it force me into the Defence System section. The programme then proceed with a message notifying me that it is scanning the user for DNA. What the literal hell. Is my computer actually scanning me? Well it looks like it did giving me information of myself and confirming that I have access to this programme. This day is just getting weirder and weirder.
It continues to scan but this time it looks more similar to an anti-virus programme. Interestingly, instead of scan for virus it says scan for pokéxtinction. Pokéxtinction, the same name my brother said before dying. The program works like an anti-virus has it scans, but it gives me a virtual map of the bank has it seems to scan it. I’m not sure if I should be surprise or scared. Maybe just stopping to ask question on this stuff and accept that is exist would be an easier option.
A few minutes later it give me a notification that the bank been scan and that it found five pokéxtinction. What the hell is a pokéxtinction? I know that they may be dangerous but outside of my brother last words, I have no information on them. They do sound somewhat familiar but I cannot recall where I would have hear such a name. Maybe a similar name they I’ve heard before? Possible, but all I know is that they are important.
But what to do now? I hold this information but I do not know what to do now. Are the pokéxtinction to be trusted? Clearly the programme consider them dangerous but would that mean they are the creature like my brother; like Hypno? Where they the ones that attack me this morning? That would explain why my bank has a defence system against them. Then why would the pokéxtinction be consider treat by the machine if my family is part of them? Could it be that my family been fighting them instead of working for them?
I hate not having all the necessary information. There are two sides and I have no idea who’s the good guys. And of course this is assuming that it’s a simple good vs evil war, which it never is. I better call Ronald on this, and hope to God he knows something. I know he may be no help what so ever, but I can’t this up by myself. I need someone else to help me here.
I grab my phone laying on my desk and rapidly contact Ronald and it starts to make electric noise again. My phone does dial in but instead there seems to have mechanical movement within my desk. And all of the sudden, my desk pops out a small iPad like device directly from the frame. I would question why there was a high-tech gadget in my desk but I do not have the time or the sanity to question it. The whole pokéuman/pokéxtinction is already enough for me, never mind everything else surrounding them.
Quickly, the iPad indicating that it is calling Ronald. Surpriingly it seems to act like a hybrid of my phone and computer. It’s even connected to the mainframe. Ronald still answers without losing a second.
“Victor? What’s seems to be the matter?” answer Ronald a bit shaking. It looks like he’s having a tough day too.
“I need to talk to you. It seems there more then I first though and I…” I say very quickly. My heart beat rise to extreme levels forcing me to stop my sentence. The amount of stress is making hard to just pronounce words.
“It’s alright Victor. I’ve seen the scan report form the defence system and I’ve send Steven and the boys to come and pick you up. We need you at a better location if you understand.” He does know about this whole event. Thank God. At least I can trust him. Or I hope I can trust him.
“Alright, but then will you tell me everything.”
“Of course, I’m just sorry to have to be this way.”
“It’s alright, this mustn’t have been easier for you then for me.”
“Everything will be fine, don’t worry.” He hangs up the phone leaving an uncomfortable silence. A short silence in which footsteps could be heard from the other side of my door. The doors open reviling Emily with six other police officers. Oh no, they’re not supposed to be here.
“Victor, I need to talk to you.” Said Emily has she stormed in my office with a very unpleasant tone.
“What is it?” I quickly check my computer reviling that all five of the pokéxtinction are here. This isn’t going well at all. But there’s six of them, and only five pokéxtinction. It’s not telling me which one specifically are one of them. Could it be that it’s too late and Emily was one of them, and now can securely get whatever they want? They may be here to capture me then. Got to act innocent now, at least until my security arrive. If just one of them is not a extinction, then
“Your security is interfering with our investigation. They took the body of your brother and refuse anyone else to check it.” Continues Emily as all six of them slow makes there way closer to my desk, almost to the point of surrounding me.
“We’ll I’m sure Ronald has he’s reason for this. It’s not like him to interfere with police investigations anyway.” I say to them reaming calm, at least externally.
“Victor, something’s going on and we want to come at the bottom of this.” Replied Emily leaning on my desk.
“And we think you’re hiding something form us.” Started one of the man, a relatively large man. Overweight to the point if you ask me.
“I’m not sure what you’re talking about officer.”
“We all know your brother was not human, and you claim to be attack by a non-human has well. Sounds suspicious doesn’t it?” Great, they are playing with me now. One wrong move and it’s over for me.
“I was has surprise then anyone else. I had no idea what my brother truly was.”
“You expect us to believe that Mr. Victor?”
“My brother was off to a private school at a very young age. Only time I would ever see him would be during Christmas. If anything I knew him less than you would expect too.”
“I see. And do you know where he went for his education?”
“My father never told me. I ask him on multiple occasion but like always he never give me an answer. I bit unfair if you ask me.”
“Isn’t that convenient that you father been keeping you and your brother away from each other.” Where is my security?
“My family problems is none of your business officer.” Just does simply words seem to have put Emily unease again? Just like before when I talk about my family. I’m getting somewhere now. Maybe Emily isn’t one of them. In that case I still have a chance.
“Oh yes it is Mr. Victor.” “Considering your bank was family owned since the beginning of the 20th century and we have seen what you brother truly look like, we have to assume you are not telling us the whole story.”
“Alright then. Come into my office accusing me of hiding whatever the hell I could be hiding while I was attack by one of those very same monster this morning in this very same office because he also wanted to find out something I did not know.” They all remain quite while a take a pause to my rambling.
“If I could have the luxury of not being assume guilty that would be appreciated.” A moment of silence filled the room. It was as if my own comment cause it but we all knew the fact that we could hear footsteps heading this direction. Here they are, finely. Has my security arrive they look in shock of the policeman within the room. Most notably is Peter, my newest security guard, looks at the situation with total fear. Not a pleasant sight to be seen from my own rescuers.
“Sirs, we are having a police investigation here. We ask all of you to leave.” Say the larger police officer.
“That won’t be necessary officer. We’re just here to pick up Victor.”
“And what for?”
“Well…” Started Steven has he falls flat on words. “For his usual lunch time.”
“And all of you decided to come fetch him?” Awkward silence filled the room waiting for an answer.
“He had a hard day. Though it would be nice be treat him.”
“You’re his security, not his god damn babysitter.” Replied the extinction ruder then before.
“Believe me when I tell you this, we all take care of each other. We’re practully a big family here.”
“Yes, yes we are.” The officer didn’t seem to like my respond. Instead he give me this look of seer frustration at me. He clearly wants something from me and he does like that I’m not telling. If only I did know what he wanted so I could have the upper hand.
“Victor, you are under arrest of interring in a police investigation.” No, he can’t be pulling that card already. This isn’t going to end well.
“What?!” I yell raising from my chair. Two of the police officer come around my desk surrounding me before I could move more.
“With what evidence?” Yell Emily with all of her lungs. She has no idea what’s going on. She’s not one of them.
“He is clearly not telling us the whole story and we will bring him to the HQ.” That respond did not satisfy Emily.
“Even if he was interfering with us, we still couldn’t arrest him like this.” Yelled Emily in pure rage.
“I’m sorry Emily, I truly am.” Two of the officers take out their tasers and stun Emily to the ground. Not wasting a moment, the fake officers tie me up using their handcuffs and force me up has they push me head first on my desk. Has the events unfold, my security begins to fight the police in a brawl. My office becomes a fighting ring has both sides not only throwing punches at each other but using my furniture has weapons.
Chairs goes flying into all direction and destroying my timeless collection. One of them even hit my art gallery causing the rings to have well fly all over the place. It even cause the rings to becoming rolling stones and causing one of the pokéxtinction agent and Peter to fall over in agony.
Steven using this chance to catch up to I and gives a right cross to one of the man holding me in cuffs. The shire force allow me to escape his grasped but the fat officer quickly grabs me again this time holding me with a headlock.
“One more move and he gets it.” He pulls his gun to my forehead and start to use me has a human shield. I could feel the sweat drops dripping down and around the cold metal barrel. At any time, a bullet could fire at my head ending my life, right in the safety of my very own bank. At the very same place Hypno came to torture me I am now being hold at gunpoint. Why did I do to deserve this?
“Now back off unless you want to see a bullet inside Victor’s head!” Order the large pokéxtinction holding his gun at ever more frightening. Everyone stand still and start to give each other sides space to breath. Soon my office because a divided zone with the pokéxtinction and me on one side, and my security on the other. Some of my security even got hold of Emily during the fighting and have brought her half- conscience body to their side. Now I’m just left with those crazy terrorist on this side now pointing their guns at my friends and rescuers.
“Call in for a teleportation extraction. I don’t want to be seen looking like this.” Order the larger one to the rest of his man, still holding me hostage. None of my security dare to attempt anything. They are just waiting until something’s happened. The only person doing anything is one of the smaller officer’s texting on his phone. Either he’s an idiot or he’s contacting the teleportation team. And if they can get me out of here without the need to pass my front door, then I’m surely done for.
“I can’t even believe you could so such a thing. I trusted you all.” murmured Emily still recovering. But slowly she gets herself up staring at her former partners.
“We do this for the best of humanity. Our world is much better off without the monster like Victor’s brother.” Replied the fat man has we continue to wait.
“I do not care what Greg was, that does not justify your action.” Scream Emily in pure anger at her so called co-workers.
“I would explain why it matter what we do but I really couldn’t care less of what you think of us. It won’t matter for much longer anyway.” What does he mean by that? Not something good I can granted that. We wait for a moment until we hear more footsteps coming closer and closer at running speed. Who else could be coming here?
To my surprise, Leonard alongside other police officer arrive bursting the door and witnessing the display that is my battlefield of an officer.
“What is the meaning of this?” Yell Leonard has he pulls out his gun at the pokéxtinctionist with the rest of his force. Without hesitation my security pull out there guns and line up with Leonard turning the advantage around. The corrupted cops are now completely surrounded.
“I can explain sir.” Saying the fat officer in a fear filed voice still holding me at gunpoint like a ragdoll.
“You are holding Victor hostage with a gun to his head. What excuse could you possibly have?” The hostage-taker do not give him a respond. It remaind total silence with both sides ready to fire at each other. One wrong move from both side and it could be the end for me. Already put in a life or death situation for the day.
“I cannot even express the pure shock I am witnessing.” Continue Leonard in a disappointed voice breaking the silence.
“Well, you see sir… screw this.” The agents turns around to the rest of the pokéxtinction while still holding me. “Where the hell is that extraction team.”
He’s not looking at me. Now’s the time to act. I bite his hand with full force. His deadening scream echoed in the room has he lets go of me. Without resisting, I drop on the floor making me out of the line of fire. My rescues took the opportunity and started to fire at the extinxtionist with the rest of their man following shortly. The pokéxtinctionist had no time to react and fall to their demise has my back wall collect more bullets. The blazing sound of gun soon come to a stop.
Steven, Leonard and Emily alongside two others help me up and un-cuff me. I couldn’t help by look at the terrified seine. Blood spilled all over my back walls, dead bodies slowly filling the floor with their inside. Something where I’m willing to vomit at. Although some of the real cops and my security seem to have no problems checking the area for me.
“One of them is still alive sir.” Said one of the cops has he grabs a corrupt officer from behind my desk. Unlike his friends, he doesn’t have any bullet wounds and seem perfectly unharmed, other than a few blood spatter on him. Leonard walks up to him right before spiting on his face.
“There is nothing I hate more than a corrupt cop working for their own personal gain.”
“You have no idea the sacrifice we do Leonard.” He tries to put of a fight against him but Leonard want’s none of it.
“I don’t want to hear it. Steven, take him to your cell. We’ll deal with him personally later.” Say the chief to the extinction has he is being taken away.
“I’m terribly sorry Victor. I would never suspect my man to do such a thing.”
“That’s the problem; they weren’t your man.” Starts Steven.
“What do you mean?”
“They are part of an organization call Pokéxtinction. A terrorist group if you will.”
“Wait, you know about, whatever they are? Then why the hell didn’t you tell us and why have I never heard of them?” I’ve never seen Leonard this angry before. His voice makes him sound irritated at best, and full out furious at worse.
“That’s because they are good at staying under the radar. But what is important is that we capture them.” Continue Steven. “Now we can stabilize the situation.”
“Well not quite. They did contact there headquarter right?” Mention Peter cutting within the conversation.
“Shit.” Within a matter of seconds, Steven runs off in a full sprint. Not unlike him to cut off a conversation like this. He’s always in his own world I swear. It didn’t take long for Leonard to break the silence.
“Will someone tell me what’s going on?” Yelled Leonard has his face becomes more and more red.
“I don’t know that much either.” I know my respond isn’t much but it’s all I got.
“But how the hell couldn’t you notice that you brother wasn’t even human.” Really, he’s really going there now.
“Don’t you go starting on that Leonard!” We both start a staring directly in the eyes waiting for the next to make his move. Thankfully Emily comes in between before anything happened.
“Can we not, please?” We both stand down has Leonard still unhappy with the situation.
“Isn’t is peachy. The god damn Al-Qaeda have control of members within my own police force and have some kind of creatures in there control.”
“Pokémon, they are called Pokémon.” Said Peter quietly. We all just stare at him a bit shock with the word Pokémon. A word we sadly recognize.
“Excuse me? Pokémon? The same creatures form that cartoon that my son used to watch?” Reply Leonard with what everyone was thinking. Where fighting creatures from a kids show. I would try to question why it was the cast but my sanity needs a break form question what’s going on.
“Correct. I recognize Victor’s brother has a Sableye. My younger brother is really into these things and I sometime play with him. I couldn’t believe it myself but when I saw your brother Victor, I don’t even understand myself but…” Peter simply stop finding it too difficult to continue his argument. All that case is Leonard turning in a circle with his face becoming redder. He looks like a balloon ready to explode.
“Look I know it’s hard to understand but we are saying the truth.” My words to not calm him down.
“This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in my life. I hope you realise that.” He continues throw his arms around has if he lost all control of them.
“Yes, but you saw Greg. We all know that Pokémon exist now.” Continue Peter more certain than ever.
“Alright.” Shouted Chief Leonard. “I think I need some time to reflex on my life decision. I will be somewhere if you need me.” He quickly walks away ignoring any attempt to stop him. Emily looks at me terrified.
“Well then. It looks like we have a lot to worry about.” She says quietly.
“Ok, so we may have a problem, and… where’s Leonard?”
“This is becoming too much for him.” Replied Emily calming herself down.
“I can’t blame him. It is crazy to think about.”
“So what’s the problem Steven?” I ask him trying to get to the point before he drifts off again.
“Right. The pokéxtinctionist were capable to send a distress signal at the rest of their man and they are most likely coming for us.”
“What do you mean by coming for us?” Continue Emily.
“Well you see, those man of your aren’t alone. If anything there most likely a God damn army coming on our doorstep at any rate now.”
“How is that even possible? Wouldn’t we know about a terrorist group that powerful?”
“Like I said, they are good at staying under the radar. Consider them to be the Illuminati. Actually now that I think about it it’s a really good description for them.”
Steven takes a moment to pounder on what he just said instead of continuing to explain.
“Are you for real.” Replies Emily in complete disbelief.
“What, you’re telling us that those cute little Pokémon are coming for us?” Continue Peter with his hopeful tune of voice.
“Peter, I wish you were right when you say that.” Says Steven.
“To be fair you seem to be the only one that knows anything about this Steven.” I answer to Steven still leaving us in the dark.
“Fair enough, but I honestly don’t think we have time to talk about it anymore. At any moment the pokéxtinction may be here. We do need to focus on creating as defensive line if we are to survive.”
“So we have a way to fight off an army then? Is that what you’re telling me Steven?”
“Tactically yes. We do have a plan for a scenario like this.”
“Why am I not even surprise to hear this.”
“The plan was to hold out until an extraction team and arrive and take us out of here while we blow up the bank erasing all trace of our involvement with the pokéumans.” Lose my bank, lose everything I’ve ever fought for.
“Well… that doesn’t sound too bad. At least we can get out of here.” I try to keep a strong face but failed horribly. I care for this bank deeply, almost has if it was my own son. But i also care for Ronald, Steven and everyone else. I can't let my emotions get the better of me.
“It would be if it wasn’t the fact that we we’ll never get an extraction team.”
“What!”
“When you came in charge, our contracts with the pokéuman were terminated, has well has our communication with them.”
“You have to be kidding me.” I said has I walk around Steven to calm myself down. “Can’t we call the army? The National Guard?”
“They would take too long. That and they could have pokéxtinction members within their ranks making it more of a problem then a solution.”
“So were already dead then.”
“Not necessary. We still have a chance to fight long enough so the pokéumans can hopeful help us but the odds aren’t in our favor that’s for sure.” Never fought I would die here; until today at least. Maybe God is testing my will to live at this point. But then again, I’m not going down without a fight. I didn’t get this bank for sitting on my back and having everything done for me.
“Alright, let’s still try to fight them off. I know our chance aren’t high but we may has well try.”
“Understood. I’ll open the armory.” Say Steven already taking out his keys.
“Make sure everyone gets a gun. Security and police alike. The rest well be move to the basement where we should be better protected.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
“I don’t want anyone entering or exiting the building without us knowing.” I order Emily still standing next to me.
“Yes Victor.” She replies sounding a bit more confident.
“Alright, now if you excuse me I have to meet up with Ronald.”
“Probably for the best, he knows about his then anyone else. Your father was the one to originally tell us but Ronald was always his right hand man in this.” So Ronald have been hiding something from me. I guess John wasn’t too superstition after all. But it’s not like him to hid things from me, especially not something that big. Guess he never wanted me to know.
I leave my office has everyone else even more confuse then I was this morning.

This is going really interestingly. Good job! The only thing I'd advise - do a quick proof-read for spelling and grammar errors. Yeah, I know, complaining about grammar on the Internet, but it does stick out and it makes it much more readable. Apart from that, good work!

Damn, and i though my hours proof-reading would of at least taking care of the obvious grammar and spelling errors. Guess there's still a lot of work to do on that.

Yeah... Sorry! If you're typing on a mobile device, that will probably increase it.

That's where the problem is. I don't use a mobile device to write my stories. I have a laptop with Microsoft Word and tend to reread my work over and over again correcting mistakes has i go. If anything i refuse to post any from of writing unless i have rereading it several times and found words or sentence that doesn't make sense.
Never though it would be this difficult to correct my writing.

Practice, that's pretty much all it is. Weirdly, I didn't notice that many errors at all in Chapters 1 and 2. It just seems to be this one. Maybe you're not as bad as you think.
