Description I had a few requests for a drawing tutorial for Lackadaisy so I figured, hey! Let's draw some stupid, whynot?
Originally, it had a painting tutorial included, but it was getting to be too long, so I truncated it. That part might make it onto lackadaisycats.com when I hoist up there, though.

One should always know how to remove a problematic city block with a grilled cheese sandwich...

It makes you look so cute and innocent. Like Freckle up until you hand him a gun.

Very helpful. But how can a grillcheese sandwitch be a weapon again?

That's the process, all right! The solid underlying substructure makes a huge difference in the depth of the illustration.

I tend to do the early stages in red pencil, because I can then strip them out from beneath the graphite that I use to draw in the defining lines which make up the final. This makes cleanup a lot easier, in that my drawings tend to look very unruly as well, but the red is easily isolated and then removed in Photoshop.

Well what do you know. A tutorial that is actually FUN to read, and even better, actually useful. Most tutorials I've seen sort of go along the lines of:

"First, pick up a pencil."

"Draw it like this"

[insert highly complicated, no mercy drawing where all has been cleaned but the final lines.]

"Hope I've been some help!"

Bleh. Thank you for being so helpful.

Hmm. It doesn't seem very helpful. But... I like it. Though, you did a very nice example of foreshortening... and drawing pinstripes.

And yes, down with 2-d loser shapes!

"For more lies and misinformation, read on to Part Two."

You have the greatest sense of humor. Add your talent to that sense of humor, and you have one AMAZING comic artist. I'm soo excited about this comic, and I'm not much of a comic reader normally.

Keep it up.

Hi there. I was just curious, what materials do you use for your drawings? Like, any specific kind of pencil, etc.

Great work by the way.

tracyjb In reply to renton1313 [2006-06-20 23:24:54 +0000 UTC]

Nothing special -- just a #2 mechanical pencil and standard printer paper or bristol board.

This is neat! Not only you kept things simple and helpful, but the tutorial was overall very humorous and relaxed as well! You are really talented and professional, but unlike some "holier than thou"-sort of artists, you seem easy to approach. I like that. Oh, and of course I also love Lackadaisy cats.

Thanks -- I'm glad you liked it. It's good to hear I seem easy to approach too. I like to think I'm more of a dirty heathen than a holier-than-thou sort.

That's cool, I think I learned some things for cartooning. I don't like cats, but as long as they destroy the idiots and old people, they're fine with me. And I like the closing line, good touch.

From now on, I'll guess I'll try using basic shapes and thumbnails drawings to improve my compositions.
