Sloane was undoubtedly Cassius' mother, that much was obvious. They shared the same creams in their coats, her scent filled his being with calm in moments of distress, she weaned him. So why was it that she seemed no more than a stranger as she stood there telling him that in the morn he would belong to the Kindergarten? A part of him wished that she would weep over losing him, that she would - for the first time- profess her maternal love for the pup. There were no tears in her eyes, and Cassius could swear he felt the chill of the stone hardening her heart. At that moment he knew, he would never be more than a pound of flesh to surrender to the gods.
In the morning he would enroll in the Kindergarten. There he would learn his duty, fulfill his purpose as the deities command. There he hoped he would discover his true kin.
