Description
Small 4-4-0s are not very powerful...this one can only haul 60 tons on a 3% grade, or about 200 tons on the level, at about a running pace.Related content

Y'know something I have been thinking about and you could probably answer this given your research into the Baldwin 8-22Cs, but how powerful were they compared to other 4-4-0s? Like the classic 8-18-C (I think that's the right classification) such as the Eureka & Palisade #4.

Well, I don't recall the power ratings on flat ground, but on a 3% gradient, an 8-18C is rated for 48 tons and an 8-22C for 60.

Hmmm, seems like a marginal difference. But technically it is still more powerful... I guess?
In any case I just really like these locomotives' proportions. There's something about them and those sunflower stacks that I find really appealing! That's why I can't wait to see them released and try them out myself.

Yeah, have fun overrunning most stations due to no air brakes! I still haven't much gotten over the slow brake action, but it's a decent little runner.
And keep in mind that the twelve tons is an extra car - not much but it's still a difference. Not to mention that the difference is more or less proportional, so that if you have double-headers and/or shallower gradients, it's a more considerable change.

Excellent shot! Is this the WP&Y route everybody is working on? I looks like it to me.
Though the engine looks great! Have you released it yet?

Yes, it's the WP&Y.
And no, the 8-22Cs are not out yet. I'm going to get the whistle recordings this Saturday.

She's only doing about 8mph there, but yes, it's going just fine. Can't really make it up past Clifton, however.

That's when you cheat by getting a Beyer Garratt off the DLS and charge the hill.

3-foot-gauge Beyer Garratts are hard to find. I've used an Atlas 0-6-6-0 for that purpose in the past, though.

South Africa had meter gauge ones, they're about as close as you can get.
