Description
Always kinda wondered what life was like on Doom’s Hell. They must’ve been doing stuff before the invasions. Do they have their own culture that we don’t really get to see? Who creates stuff like Cyberdemon augments and Spiderdemon mechanical legs? Do imps go to school to become demon scientists and engineers? Do Revenants and Arch-Viles have an Evil Hogwarts to learn their necromantic trade? Are there baby Cacodemons? The answer to all these is probably Pure Evil Magic Darkness Death Grrr, but, ya never know.Related content

According to DOOM 2016 lore, the Cyberdemon is the result of an experiment modifying one of a race of big-ass demons with UAC technology. That piece of lore specifically mentioned it was just one that was modified, so I'm guessing in DOOM: Eternal there'll be more where this big guy came from. I'm hoping that I'm right and I'm hoping that I'm wrong at the same time, because that's the same treatment the Cyberdemon got going from the 1993 DOOM to DOOM II, which I like for nostalgia, but I'm scared of what abilities will be carried over from the boss in 2016.

I'm pretty sure all the questions will be answered in Doom eternal, and possible extra lore they'll have outside the game through different sources.
Which I can agree that doom 2016 is a BADASS game!

I know it goes agianst the spirit of doom but it's nice to humanize easily the worst, most hated demon in the game.
do demons have a culture? Well if Doom 2016 is anything to go by, where Hell has an organized religion, buildings, structures, yeah I'd say they do have a culture.
They probably don't comprehend good and evil like life in non-hellscape does, but they are at least sentient.

Well in the Doom novelization from the nineties, the protagonist at least tries talking to the demons. i give him points for trying to make peaceful contact with an imp

The Doom comic, on the other hand...
"You are huge! That means you have huge guts! RIP AND TEAR!"
...well. I guess technically he talked to the demons

Well, I never read the novels but I've wondered about that for a long time and I think my ideas about the demons and how every piece come together is kind of interesting.
So, despite me being probably wrong, I gonna share it here.
Firstly I believe some of the demons didn't existed prior the invasion. These were basically all the humans(Zombie guy , the Heavy Weapon Dude, etc) and the Revanent (he is pretty much a reanimated dead guy with cannons on his shoulders), I like to think the Specters also didn't existed but more on that later. Also I don't think all the other demons(the native demons) had any sort of mechanical enhancement prior the invasion.
About their lives on Hell, I think there is two main types of societies:
- The first would be like an Medieval society, where Imps and Mancubus were the main labour force, growing crops(there is trees in Doom so probably something grow there) and doing artesian stuff(the pentagrams won't paint itself right?). Hell-Knights and Barons were the well like knights and barons, the guys who protect everybody and finally Arch-Viles would be like shamans or priests since they have reanimating/healing powers.
Demons and Cacos/Pains would be like beasts of burder or rides for the other demons(they look like semi-sapient species to me, I dunno why), used for food, riding and moving stuff.
- The second type would be some sort of tribe. A tribe who rely on pillage and robbery for survival
Since Hell/Mars is mostly a giant desert, there is trees but not so much, food should be a problem for them, and it isn't hard to imagine some tougher demons deciding to gather his friends and family in a nomad life of robbery. As they often would engage in combat with other demons, natural born warriors like Hell Knights and Barons would probably be the ones in these tribes.
Now the top guys, since Spiders are probably the smartest demons(they have a huge brain) other demons would seek their advices, for that reason they would be like Royalty, always on top of the hierarchy of tribes and villages. At last there is the Mother Demon and The Icon of Sin, these two would be worshiped as gods by the other demons, but usually won't do anything of relevance.
That summarize how I picture Hell/Mars before the invasion, or how I like to imagine 'The Contact'.
After the personel of UAC discover the portals and the demons who lay beyond. I imagine they try to colonize Hell/Mars and slave the demons who inhabit it, using them as lab rats to unveil the reasons behind their powers and create new weapons. They even gone so far to actually trap the Icon of Sin and dessicate it. However the demons ward of the marines and eventually start an invasion on UAC bases.
The demons used the gear of fallen marines and abandoned equipment from UAC left on Hell/Mars to reverse engineer the technology and 'upgrade' their troops, since most of Hells warriors(Hell Knight and Barons) died or were captured.
From UAC experiments two new demons were born, the Specter(the marine can become invisible so UAC developed invisibility and the Specter may be the test subject for it) and the Cyberdemon(who I believed was formerly a Baron).
The reason why I believe Cyberdemon was the only human mechanized demon, was firstly because he run on steam(that is pretty cool!) and Mars don't have liquid water. And second because he has exposed wires all over his body, this suggest he wasn't a finished yet so why he was actived? The demons have no reason to send an unfinished project if they were gaining ground and overrunning the UAC. To me, it makes more sense if he was rescued from UAC by the demons.
So that is my crazy ideas about the demons of Doom, if you made it this far. I hope you saw any sense of logic on this

They tried to explain Cyberdemon's origins in Wolfenstien RPG. Don't if that's canon or not though.

The Disgaea series plays with a lot of those ideas, actually. That Hell is a place, demons have lives/culture and... uh, believe it or not, cybernetics and science divisions (the CyberDemon even makes a lawyer-friendly cameo of sorts, long story). The third game was even pretty much about an (adorably) evil Hogwarts for young demons as well.
EDIT: Should also mention the series is really TG friendly too. Easy to do to your generic units, though without fanfare, and a major TG plot in Dimension 2 including a cute "trapped as a girl" bad end.

Sounds nice! I always enjoyed the look of the Disgaea games, but never had a chance to play em. Definitely would like to give em a shot in the future!

There is actually more going on then you might think they were planning. Their commander keen series of games actually ties into doom, and there is a fan theory that the doom protagonist is commander's keen descendant. Specifically, the Cyber demon shown here, is actually one of the final bosses from commander keen. Why? because he loses his leg and arm. dun dun DUUUN.

Doomguy is a zombie who can run 60 miles per how and take a demon's head clean off with a chainsaw.
Of course he is.
