Description
For a long time, the only thing I knew about Johnny Test was that it featured, for a scant few seconds, a really cool TFTG design. After watching it to get some ‘research’ in for this strip, I wish that was still all I knew about it.
Heh, I jest - It was good enough for a kid show. A bit cheap and kinda ugly, but sometimes imaginative and... good enough. This strip kind of breaks canon in some respects, with the few episodes I watched, but I hope no one minds.

Hoo boy is gender bending a recurring theme! Like...there's an episode where Johnny dresses as a girl scout, Gil hits on him, and Johnny says something along the lines of "Gil, it's me, Johnny" and his response was "I know :3" if I recall correctly. There was also him cross dressing for Bring Your Daughter to Work Day. In the DS game Johnny has to rescue "Princess Gil", the sisters turn themselves into boys once in the sleep walking episode, Johnny switches places with a Princess that looks identical to him...
...honestly it's the only reason I watched the show!

I find it strange how much people disliked this show. It was perfectly fine for what it was. Plus, the show was very much an driving force as to why I started looking into the Tg and Tf side of fandoms. Was it always good? No, but I really don’t think it deserves all of the flack that it gets.

Some people admit Season 1 was okay. I was surprised how much backlash it got but I guess the quality did go down hill over time.

He's done it before. Remember "Bring Your Johnny to Work Day" where he cross dresses? "Johnny Scouts" where he dresses as a girlscout? He used the Mega Hotty Body Flakes at the end of Episode 1 to intentional turn into a girl hulk thing. There was also that time he and Dukey got turned into Roller Derby girls but I dunno whose idea THAT was!

And crossdressing for infiltrating a girlscout group is much different to just fully changing your gender. XD

I think this show biggest crime is that it went for 6 seasons and almost 10 years, while much better shows died sooner. I mean, at least Simpsons and Spongebob started as Really Good, before going Mediocre or worse. Test started 7/10 at best.

The show had its moments, and the characters all had points where they were pretty likable. But even as a kid who would watch anything as long as it could hold my attention, I thought it had problems. It was mostly the problems I had with many other shows that introduced unique concepts for one-off episodes, the "why didn't you make a show or arc about this instead of just dropping it after this episode." critique. Nowadays all I remember is the characters, Blast Ketchup, The Game cone 5, and the "Phat vs Fat" running gag. And since two of those four are things I thought were kinda dumb, I'm going to assume that the critiques most people have aren't all that off the mark.

The show definitely had that Kid Show mentality to its ideas and characters, with its episodic format and its adherence to the status quo. Maybe if they pulled off a Hollywood reboot, they could age it up a bit and plan out character arcs, more purposeful and even slighly more realistic uses for Mary and Susan's insane technology, and at least a whole season where Johnny is stuck like this or something. Heh, kinda weird to hope for a return of Johnny Test.

Yeah. I found it unremarkable, but inoffensive. I remember thinking that the sisters looked remarkably like girl clones of Dexter, though.

It is a little odd and fun to think of the show as a Rule 63 Dexter's Lab, with Johnny as the male Deedee. It doesn't completely fit, but there's juuust enough there to make one ponder.

The whipcracks happened so often I just tuned them out. But then I got bothered by the same guitar riff they kept using on scene transitions. The sound design was... different

Never been much of a fan of the show, but loved the TG transformation, sadly it was way too brief.
Also I always had a feeling they would be a great couple, even though they faked it. Just hope/wish Johnny would accept Gil's feelings for her...

Yeah it was odd they teased the female transformation in the opening credits but did not do one till years later and then only for a couple of seconds.
When the show looked like it was cancelled after the first season there were all ready listed episode titles for season 2, there was one called "Johnny's Miss Teen" that sounded very promising.

Actually the TF in the intro sequence was in Episode 1. There's actually a LOT of cross dressing in the show but it's scattered about. "Bring Your Johnny to Work Day" and "Join the Johnny Scouts" were two episodes with cross dressing and there's an entire Rule 63 universe in the episode "Johnny Alternative".
I do clearly remember that episode name, Johnny's Miss Teen, because I was SO hoping for the return of THIS Johnny.

Yeah, I've seen the cross dress episodes, some were a lot of fun like the Princess Johnny one.
The Johnny's Miss Teen title does have such fun possibilities, imagine it's plot being Johnny's sisters getting him mad as they prepare to compete in a Miss Teen contest to try to attract Gil. So he decides to show them up by winning the contest himself. Ah the fun of Johnny dealing with fancy dresses and heels & such, but also having to fend off unwanted admirers. And Gil of course.

I remember seeing that TF in the commercial and being intrigued, the fact it lasted just a few seconds when most of the experiments they actually do in the show's other episode can last minutes before things goes awry rather disappointed me back in the day. I gave it a fair chance, but in the end I thought it was basically a less good Dexter's Lab.
As always Ian, you're comics are a riot. Loved the full thing, down to end pay off. And you can bet the sisters won't be helping anytime soon since she's stolen Gil. Bwahaha!

Well, it seems that this was well-written as a whole and I rather enjoyed it. You'd think that Susan and Mary would have the formula written down for the final product and then just take it and get in a hot body competition with Johnny over Gil.

And fun idea - It kind of would harken back to the old status quo, with the girls trying too hard and Johnny not trying at all - and they wouldn't be complete rivals, because Johnny would probably still be trying to help them get with Gil, if only to get him off his back, romantically! Quite the complicated little triangle/rectangle they'd have going.

At this point I'd say it's a romantic pentagon if you count Susan and Mary as separate people, since only ONE of them can reasonably get Gil... or if you count Eugine/Bling Bling Boy aiming for Susan. If you still count Susan and Mary as separate and then add Eugine, then you get a hexagon...
