Description
The Fairy Spell is definitely an amazing spell for speedruns, but it has its limits.

the fact she can move it at all is F'ing amazing,
she should be proud, give up on it,
go learn all the fairy magics... she should have unlimited mana now so win that way

except only the Master Sword and Light Arrows can defeat Gannon, unless there is divine intervention involved...

Yep, and you used it to pass tall cliffs and bottomless pits, and you have to leave the current screen in order to change back.

Β When I was a kid I was kind of irritated that the game didn't do anything interesting with the fairy spell in Zelda II. Instead of turning into a fairy just to fly a few pixels up to an otherwise inaccessible area and then turning back, picture wee fairy girl Link having to fight her way through a couple of actual levels populated by now-gigantic versions of the small enemies in the game and having to avoid being stomped to death by moblins.
Β Admittedly, it would have been tricky to implement on the NES's hardware, but I still think it would have been a neat addition.

We got something sort of like this in Minish Cap! Sadly, not fairy-related.

Oh, dear...Link should be more careful about flying in that pose! That's an awfully short skirt on the dress.

Wow, now THAT is a short dress. I would ask why the spell didn't give her a dress that fit, but I have found it is better not to question such things.

Β Link was a female fairy in The Adventure of Link because they couldn't be bothered to give the spell a unique sprite, though you wouldn't think that it would take much effort to do something as simple as recolor the fairy from pink to green and give it a jaunty hat . Part of the reason most people forget about the spell is that while it has some utility in flying through locked doors and skipping some difficult enemies or platforming sections, it costs a lot to use and only lasts for one screen, meaning it's something that most players wouldn't be using for very long or terribly often.
Β As for "boy fairies" there weren't any in the games at that time, though they did appear at least once in the American The Legend of Zelda cartoon that accompanied the Super Mario Bros. Super Show (consequently, they might also have been in the Valiant Comics series that followed the cartoon's lead, but I don't recall any specifically). I actually haven't ever played a Zelda game with male fairies, so I suppose that they must only show up in the more recent* entries.
Β * "More recent" meaning anything after the SNES or Game Boy Color games, because I am ancient.

In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, the player could turn into a fairy. Not sure about any other games though.

In one of the oldest Zelda games you had a spell that turned you into a fairy.
