That's easier said than done. Avoiding sight and sound of the opposite gender would rely heavily on luck, and if, but chance, Comet did catch sight or sound of a girl, then Maria would have a lot of trouble getting him back on track.
Also, remember the events of the episode, Star locked herself in a locker specifically to avoid physical contact. Even if Maria wanted to get Comet home, who's to say that Comet would trust himself enough to open the locker.
Lastly, let's not forget that Maria herself is a girl. So avoiding sight or sound of a girl would be literally impossible.
