Description
"To the trained eye, there is as much difference between the black ash of a Trichinopoly and the white fluff of bird's-eye, as there is between a cabbage and a potato..."As my characters evolve, oftentimes, the smaller details would change — perhaps only slightly, most times — among these are the eyes. Things, as small as a wrinkle or an eyelash, can make or break a character. Eyes must be the most important part of the character. Because if you ruin the eyes, one can ruin the entire emotion of character and their personality and, as a result, ruin the entire piece itself. We instinctively look into people's eyes to seek the truth inside others and ourselves. A character may smile and laugh, but the eyes betray their the heart breaking inside.
Because these are such minor trifles, how unimportant they may seem, I created an "eye chart" to keep track of my characters' allegorical "windows into the soul."

Not at all. Eyes are windows to the soul of characters. It was necessary to make a chart, to remember the details of how the eyebrows and eyes relate, etc.

Brilliant and true words regarding the importance of eyes. I'm only just starting to define styles between my characters now, so just getting to see how others make there own is a great study tool. You've got some beautiful words and wonderful eyes here.

Thank you. Your comment made me re-read my deviation and I re-wrote my explanation, but I'm glad you liked it; I hope it helps.
Check out the rest of my gallery. I'd love to hear any critiques.

Now to work on the hair.... I'm trying to learn how to draw Disneyish. A lot harder then I thought.

The Disney style is harder than it looks. But I think adapting any style that isn't your own is difficult. It just takes a lot of practice, lots of trial and error.

you're exactly right. the eyes are everything. if i had gotten the eyes right in the sketch i uploaded last week, i might be happy with it. but i didn't get them, and the entire character is lost.
eyes are a window to the soul, and they say more about a character than any other aspect of a drawing.
a few weeks ago, a friend showed me sketches from an orignal series she is going to write, and i tried to deduce things about the characters from the sketches. i was right every time, except in the pictures where the eyes were closed.

Nice concept!
I think I might do the same. I should anyway as sometimes I lose track of how I change little details on my characters as well.

You're welcome.
BTW, I started doing an eye model chart for my bat characters, just to see how different they are. Then while I was doing it, I decided that I should do an "ear model" instead, since I there's more differentiation among the characters' ears than there are the eyes. The thing with the eyes is some of them look alike (and part of that was intentional as some of the characters are Fidget's blood relatives) and I'm afraid that someone on the outside might think, "Well, they all look the same to me."
Anyway, you ought to check out my Scrap Gallery. I have 42 images in my Scrap collection, and I look for advanced critique on those as much as I do my finished deviations.
