Description "The fact is that I am a little upset, and you must put it all down to that..."

Lillian Bai-He Silverson is the beloved daughter of the "Master Blackmailer" Julius Augustus Silverson and his late wife, Lady Silverson. As youth would have it, the two-year-old Lillian may be a prodigy but she cannot escape some same basic childish illogics and imaginative fantasies. What's wrong with cure world hunger with mud pies? Or to overstuff the fireplace with wood, grass, and sticks to make smoke signals to Father Christmas? Feed a blanket cookies? ...And when all else fails, blame the dog!

Lily is very much me when I was her age. I believed I could solve world hungry by making mudpies, with real mud, and dirtied the entire oven. Precocious little child that I was. So I'm glad you like this.

Basil had for a pet? Beeeesss! Why? Because Holmes, when he retires to Sussex, took up apiculture (bee-keeping). In my pastiches, I do have a particular honeybee, names Beatrice, latch on to him during his retirement. She loves sitting on his shoulder and strawberry jam.

Not at all! I have an affinity for insects for pets because I used to have them for pets myself. It was logical for mice to have pets being insects and the occasional invertebrate, like spiders and maybe even snails, one of my most recent favourite pet to date -- I currently own two freshwater apple snails, Slimer (gold shell, white body) and Zuul (blackish blue shell, black body).

i used to catch snakes and keep them. i'd feed them frogs from the front yard. now all i have are cats, dogs, doves, and chickens. but the chickens get eaten....

Apple snails (Pomacea bridgesii specifically) are subtropical, fully-aquatic freshwater snails from Central and South America; they're one of the largest freshwater snails -- usually a little larger than golf ball. They're great aquarium pets, assuming that it's with peaceful fish -- and oftentimes a peaceful (or should I say "tolernate") betta. My snails, particularly Slimer (my oldest snail), have very noticeable personalities and show signs of child-like humour and intelligence. Slimer loves to play with bubbles! He travel 360 degrees around the tank, climb down the heater, then leap into stream of bubble (via a bubble wand and/or airstone), and he will FLYYYY for awhile, then (of course) sink to the bottom of the tank, then he'll repeat this all over again -- and continue to do this for HOURS on end! I haven't quite figured out WHY he does it, but I suppose he just finds it FUN! They're also very curious and seem to enjoy exploring; they also have a habit of not sharing food (or at least Slimer does!). I just got a new tank today and I want to give him a (new) bubble wand just to amuse him. I love my snails (and my frogs) more than my fish; they're more amusing!

I used to have a big frog as a pet, named him Gromit! He was so clever! He knew he was feeding time when you whistled. Today, I just have fish, snails, and aquatic frogs (African Dwarf Frogs).

that's so cool! i wish i could have apple snails now...

when i kept snakes, they had distinct habits too. the big snake would curl up in the water and only move if a frog came within striking distance, and then he wouldn't let the little snake in the water. so the little snake would be constantly on the move, trying to stay cool. it got into the habit of climbing up the side of the terrarium as if it could get out, and it did this every day.

gromit! lol, cute have you ever kept firebelly toads? i love those

tranimation-art In reply to bcbdrums [2008-07-03 07:09:55 +0000 UTC]

You can get apple snails, marble-size, at Petco for about $2, labelled at a "mystery snail" (which is Pomacea bridgesii, specifically). They're blue, black, white (ivory), gold, brown, striped, non-striped, and combinations of these. You can see them here: [link] They're the cutest little things on earth. Unlike most snails, they're not heremaphorites, so (if you have just one) babies won't overrun your aquarium.

I haven't owned firebelly toads, no. But they are cute! I've own a toad, one mentioned before, Gromit; I rescued from a friend's pool fliter.

i rescued a toad from one of my dogs a few years back. dog was randomly digging in the middle of the yard and dug up this odd looking toad. i think it was hibernating because it didn't move as my dog pawed at it. so i snatched it up and put it in the pond. i don't know what happened to it, but i assume it woke up in the cold water...

I just introduced Zuul (the new little blue snail) to Slimer (the older, bigger gold snail) in the established tank... I just noticed Slimer "hugging" Zuul...I'm either going to have babies or a shell without a snail; I'm not sure which. Slimer doesn't seem to be hurting Zuul, Zuul is just shuts himself up in his shell. Maybe Slimer's testing if Zuul's a prospective mate...although, I could have sworn they're the same sex -- chose Zuul specifically for that reason, but it's difficult to sex them! We'll just see if one of them has an egg sack.

When I woke up Gromit through hibernation, he got REALLY GRUMPY but went back to sleep later! I'm sure the toad woke up in a shock and made a new place to hiberate in.

i'm trying to picture hugging snails....somehow i can't seem to...lol

lol...i bet some animals only ever sleep, and then get grumpy every time they are woken.

what is your opinion of spiders as pets?

tranimation-art In reply to bcbdrums [2008-07-06 06:32:42 +0000 UTC]

I had a pet tarantula named Ensyford. He was formerly abused. Someone apparently cracked a pen and poured ink on him, burning his hairs and paralising two of his legs. Poor baby. He died two weeks later. Tarantulas are senstive to moving to new environments; though, I tried my best to make him comfortable to the new place. Guess he was just at the end of his rope; he was rather old. Poor Ensyford. I miss him.

Smiler likes to hug Zuul (whose half his size). He climbs on him and his body curles around Zuul's shell, which looks like a hug. I suppose this is a way to entice mating. This morning I saw Zuul open up and they were struggled, that means an egg sac -- or they're gay, LOL!

Spiders are BRILLIANT escape artists, as are scorpions, turtles, lizards, snakes, and oddly enough crabs! Jumping spiders here are strange looking. They're all black with white spots and florscent green fangs! It's odd!

So far no egg sac, looks like males! Slimer tried it one more time with Zuul, nothing. He seems crushed. Oh well.

green fangs??? THAT must be a fascinating creature.

lol...you said slimer is old? maybe he's forgotten how to tell the difference between males and females, or is just delusional from his years of being without a female snail...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tranimation-art In reply to bcbdrums [2008-07-11 00:30:59 +0000 UTC]

Slimer is certainly OLDER. He is about a year older than Zuul. Of course, it helped Slimer's growth, when he ate two dead fish and a few frogs -- all that protein! That might me it. Or it's good old fashion trial and error.

Yep, GREEN FANGS! And they have a habit of STAAAAARRING at you. I always wonder what they're thinking when they stare at you like that.

Turtles are MASTER escape artists! How big was the bow compared to the turtle? A painted turtle I had was able to escape a high-wall bathtub in half and hour. If you don't have a fastner for the tank lid, they can easily push up the lid and escape too.

your snail ate fish and frogs??? that is rather....

staring spiders...hmm, i think there are some spiders i'm grateful not to see the eyes of. i had to kill a black widow recently and that spider simply would not die, no matter how many times i sprayed it. if it had looked at me, i am sure it would have been looking something like

the box was about as tall as the arm of a couch, and it happened to be a painted turtle. i don't have any idea how it escaped a box with nothing for it to grip.

i caught a baby bunny once that jumped out of a garbage can. that was amazing too.

oh, did you get the poster?

tranimation-art In reply to bcbdrums [2008-07-11 07:40:22 +0000 UTC]

Slimer is my clean-up crew. Snails will eat all kinds of algae, sometimes even hair algae, uneaten fish food, dead plant matter, and, yes, even dead animals -- they just don't eat poo! Who needs suckerfish when you have a snail?! Two of my fish died and sank to the bottom and Slimer took advantage of that and ate them. One he left the bones for me -- thanks, Slimer, yuck! -- and the other he ate bones and all! Frogs are often difficult to get to eat at first with a lot of fish around them; some frogs look great for a month then die for no reason. And Slimer makes sure the tank is clean! However, I don't like it when he eats dead fish (or frogs) because I don't know what they died of -- you don't know if it was a natural death or unnatural one! But he has a stomach of steel, I tell you!

I tried to kill a black widow with Raid and it didn't work. Smashing her with a heavy box did! I had to burn her eggs with a lighter guns. Do you have black/brown recluses? Those things are nasty! Not as in dirty, but aggressive as hell! You walk in a room and it rears up, wiggling long four legs in the air and bears its fangs. It doesn't matter if you're 10,000 times its size, it will attack you! Nasty little things!

Painted turtles are fun! As are bunnies that jump out of garbage cans. I have wild cottontails that come in and out of my yard. They love our fruit trees.

Oh, yes, the poster. Uh... (runs downstairs and rummages through the pile of mail) HERE IT IS! (opens it up) Awwwwwwwwwww.....look at Tholos, he's adorable! Thank you so much! I love it! Even though Archer takes up most of the room, lol. (looks around her room) ...don't know where to put it.

oh wow. that's incredible....but disgusting. my cats are similar--they bring home something, eat most of it and then leave a disgusting gift to let me know they accomplished something. either gizzards or feathers or bits of bone...not pleasant to clean up but they keep the pests down.

i don't have the courage to smash things. i either spray them if they are dangerous, or if not i catch them and set them free.
recluses don't live in this part of the state, but we get very large wolf spiders. if they're defending eggs they will not back down for anything! it's absolutely frightening, trying to get around them. and in winter, they all decide to come in the house where it's warm (the black widows come in during the summer to get cool). it's very, very upsetting to find poisonous spiders in one's home

there are cottontails here too, and jackrabbits. the ones with the black-tipped ears? i've never seen an animal so small move so fast.

glad you like the poster! lol, i finally have some wall-space now that i've taken it down. i'm hoping for another shran pic to put up, or maybe some nice vulcans. i like vulcans too =/\=

The fish I had to clean up had the oddest expression on its face; it looked utterly SHOCKED that when he died that he'd be eaten by a giant snail! Slimer got so big after those fish and frogs! The next week he grew a new coil. I grabbed him out of the tank and went "LOOK HOW BIG YOU ARE!!!" He came out of his shell and made a happy face, making kissing noise. "Awww, I love you, too, Slimer..."

I think smashing spiders are more humane. Oftentimes, spraying them doesn't kill them instantly. My first option if always to let them go. If it's poisonious, like black recluses and black widows, I smash them as quickly as possible before they attack. Ants...especially a swarm of them eating my dog's food and biting his paws, that's a job for Raid -- and a long bath!

Cottontails here are everywhere. I don't know where they are in the day, but they're hoppin' around my neighorhood in at night. Once in a while, a dead one on the street -- which gets devoured by the giant ravens and the occasional turkey/black vulture. You usually see the vultures soaring in the sky, but once every couple of blue moons, you can see one close-up, wings out, sunning itself while sitting on the power-line -- which look like they would snap soon because of their weight.

Shran...or Vulcans. Hard choice. Any Vulcan in particular?

bcbdrums In reply to tranimation-art [2008-07-12 09:44:35 +0000 UTC]

aww, how sweet~ i love seeing my cats accomplish new things, like actually catching something (they're lazy). whenever they get gophers, they get a lot of praise

i just don't have the stomach to smash anything, though i agree it's more humane. when there's smashing to be done i call in the men

ants are a serious problem here. one year we had red ones tunnel into the well, so there would be ants coming out of the shower and the black ants live so far under the house we can't eliminate them. they always find some way back to the kitchen

i find the vultures fascinating~ we get turkey vultures here, with the bare red heads. their wingspan can be longer than i am tall, which amazes me because they don't look nearly that big when they are in flight. it's absolutely creepy to see a bunch of them roosting on an old dead tree though, like something out of a movie.

ah...i think shran wins over any particular vulcan, but as a race i find there isn't enough canon about andorians to satisfy my curiosity. but if i had to pick a vulcan it would be sarek. he has a lot of unexplored depth

lol, i'm wondering how my question of what basil would keep as a pet turned into this long and random conversation

tranimation-art In reply to bcbdrums [2008-07-13 21:33:13 +0000 UTC]

You have gophers? I never seen a wild gopher. How big are they compared to your cats?

Zuul is very lazy, it seems. He loves to stick on a glass, or a plant, sometimes upside down, and sleep motionless for hours to days on end. Slimer is far more active. He finally finished a big slice of zuccichi -- took him three days -- right on schedule.

Ewwww, red ants in the shower. That must have been painful, so sorry about that. I think the black ants are living in my kitchen wall. The red ants...they're such a problem. They multiply like crazy! Although I rather have black ants than red ones. Red ants love Texas weather. I've seen these GIANT, GIANT red ants devour the tobacco and paper from a cigarette!

Vultures are fascinating to watch. A dead dog was on the road one day and it would eat it on the street, when a car was driving down, it would walk, in that little wobble of theirs, to the curb, wait for the car to pass, and walk back to gorge on the body. I parked the car and sat for an hour watching him. He must have been well over two tall, with a wingspan...yes, as long as me; I think it was a black vulture. And, no, they don't look that big when they're flying. Of course, I'm never too sure how high they are in the air. I never seem them perched on trees, but I've seen a big group of them devouring a dead dear before; those were turkey vultures -- they were HUUUUGGE! Those guys have a wingspan longer than my car! Vultures here don't just eat carrion; I've seen them take down live chickens, or pigeons in an air, even seen them take down a sheep that got seperated from the flock. That was insane!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bcbdrums In reply to tranimation-art [2008-07-14 18:29:08 +0000 UTC]

[link] for you~

lol, a gopher is pretty small. about the size of your fist. but it's a nightmare, trying to get rid of them. the best bet is to try to flood them out, but it only works if you can get their burrow waterlogged enough to collapse.

we have more black ants than red, i think. at least, we see more black than red, since they invade the house so well. the red always seem to pop up in the worst places. the shower, the rose garden...wherever we happen to be walking with bare feet, it seems.

that's pretty scary though, ants devouring a cigarette? yikes...

and vultures taking sheep? now that is scary. the turkey vultures here have a wingspan of about six feet i think. longer than i am tall. but we have hawks mostly. red-tailed hawks are my favorite. i found a skeleton of one of those once. i also found a skeleton of a heron. that was pretty interesting...

oh, i just bought 'the good that men do.' i'm so excited! thanks for the recommendation
