Description

Hello , here's a new race I managed to come up with before finals for my Nexus project.  Copyright, by me.

The universe can be a very harsh place for biological lifeforms.  Even though Cosmic Civilization has enabled psellular power to help biological life cope, spread, and even flourish, it has always been mechanical forms which have proven to be most adept at living throughout the universe.  Indeed, purely biological sophonts are relatively rare.  Most sophont groups today are supported by android bodies, cybernetics, machine bodies, or autokinetic psellular energies.  It is very rare, however, for a mechanical lifeform to evolve naturally.  There have been numerous world-seeding operations giving rise to otherwise naturally evolving machine biospheres, and it is not unusual for these places to eventually produce sophont machine races.  The Akeil are just such a race.

Originating from the machine-seeded world of Dallyuuei, in the outer rim of the giant quasar, Singing Wind, the Akeil evolved in competition and coexistence with all other machine life on their small world.  Dallyuuei has become totally integrated with the life it supports, just as any biological life-supporting world does.  The nabots (nanobots) were the first type of machine life to be introduced to the world, and they continue to flourish just as bacteria do in a biological system.  They have also given rise to complex machine life that now roams the planet, including the spacefaring Akeil.

The Akeil body is a living machine, different in its flaws and functions, but in all the complexity and ingenuity of any biological life.  In profile, many humans would note the similar upright stance Akeil share.  This is pretty much the only physiological feature the two species have in common.  Akeil evolved from six-limbed arboreal ancestors which, before that, were aerial.  Akeil retain feather-like panels on their arms used in complex body language rituals.  They are supported by an iron alloy skeleton, housing nanomagnet matrixes and chargeable electromagnets.  These electromagnets are most apparent in the claws on their hands and feet, which can grip to magnetic surfaces and produce electrical charges.

Their nervous system is an incredibly complex radial-circuit nanomachine complex, insulated in protective layers of plastic.  Their muscular system is a series of nanotube fibro-optic cables and coils intertwined in a healing memory-metal matrix.  These underlying systems are protected by a fibroplastic skin, coated in insulating nanotube filaments.  Most bodily fluids are based on mercury, and are transported with the help a gold-based circulatory systems.

Akeil metabolisms are regulated by the core reactor, protected in the upper torsos by assimilative metallic carapaces.  These carapaces can indicate where an Akeil grew up based on what materials they have assimilated into themselves.  Their torsos are connected to their abdomens by a ball-socket joint that doubles as a back-up battery, which stores static electricity.  Akeil must eat to gain new materials for growth and repair.  Their jaws are suited to a wide range of metallic foods, which are heated to a chewable level by a super-thermal-conducting pallet.  Materials are digested by a stomach of sulfuric acid.

Akeil detect visible and ultraviolet light with rows of eyes along each side of their heads.  These are protected by a retractable shield panel, and insulated from intense light with a shade membrane.  The three spikes on the snout detect radiation, similar to smell in biological creatures.  At either side of the head are radio wave detectors.  These are equivalent to ears, and Akiel communicate through these waves to each other.

There are three “genders” with which Akeil breed.  These are the builders, the makers, and the teachers.  Builders are non-intelligent forms which are capable of asexual autonomous reproduction.  However, these are only exact replicas.  A new Akeil individual is conceived by a maker and a teacher.  The maker already possesses unique programmed blueprints, which are provided with learning programs by the teacher.  The new hybrid code is sent to the builder, which crafts the new Akeil child.  Makers are strongly protective of their children, and very conscious of individual specifications.  Teachers are able to guide their child by use of their halo-like radio array.  This array is possessed only by teachers, allowing them natural long-distance communication and control over technology with their minds.  Makers are able to do this through artificial methods.

Akiel are psychologically similar to Humans in many ways.  Akeil, due to their natural powers of communication and family orientation, have produced much more stable societies over the years.  They have been instrumental in aiding some of the most far-reaching colonies of Earth origins.

Were the nabots designed to improve on their own design when they self replicate, or do they just evolve naturally?

So, what was the original function of the arm plates? They seem to have been refunctioned(repurposed?)

what at the weather on their planet like?

Seriously, I thought I was the first one to come up with a natural mechanical lifeform. Oh well, great job with both the design and the description I never would have been able to come up with all the specs of my race. What you did is impressive.

If I had to be beaten to the punch by anybody I'm glad it was someone who is an amazing creator of aliens.

Wow, thank you.  I've always had in mind that machine life and races should be fairly widespread in at least a semi-realistic sci-fi space project setting.  Yet it seems I have given the concept relatively little attention compared to all the biological species I've done.  I naturally assume that even these races would eventually be more machine than biological, but I wanted to show what a natural machine race would be like at last.  Such ideas are pretty cool, huh?

The idea is very cool.

I forget, do the Akeil have cells, like nanobots.

Your Akeil and my aliens came about very differently. Mine are naturally machine, but at the same time artificial.

Indeed, Akeil do possess nanotech cellular structures, but as they grow many parts can become singular pieces, like the facial/torso/abdominal carapaces.  I would imagine that, if left to evolve on their own, machine life would utilize nanotech very much and would end up seeming much more like soft/fleshy biological life than large-scale modular mechanics.

My Akeil are not quite "natural" either actually.  I state that they evolved in a natural sort of way, but the machine life of their homeworld was seeded artificially, something like a nanotech panspermia.  Then again, that method may be so fundamental that they could still be regarded as naturally evolved beings.

What are your machine lifeforms like?

Ok so here I go. I decided to go ahead and rewrite the whole thing.

In the far future lots of technology and records have been lost over time due to several super wars that have ended in galactic dark ages, resulting in some races not knowing where they are from; one of these races is humans.  But the truth is the mechanical planet is earth.   It all started with a drug that would replace wounded tissue with mechanical tissue using nanobots.  These nanobots where able to reproduce and create any cell needed. In the early experiments using lab rats the scientists found out that the nanobots would not stop with just repairing the damaged cells with artificial ones but started to eat the good cells and replace them with a artificial copy, they did this until the rat was totally transformed into a living, breathing, eating, pooping, reproducing artificial replica. At first the scientist was thrilled, since they could apply it to anything from creating more intelligent droids to self-healing armor.  But when the nanobot s were finished with the rat they started looking for another lifeform to convert. They did this like a virus, with a ferocity unparalleled in nature, eating through almost every material know to man, making quarantine near impossible, the only thing that keep them in check was a synthetic diamond container.

And of course another nation got wind of the invention and thought they could weaponize it.   So they sent a strike team to collect it. But because they were unaware of the nanobots ability to eat through almost anything the strike team dumped all the nanobots into a glass vial.  They were the first causalities. They nanobots spread like wildfire with very few of the conversions being successful with a hundred dying for every one that survived.   When all attempts at quarantine failed, the nations of Earth had no choice but to quarantine the entire planet. The only remnants of humanity lie in their many colonies which eventually bosomed into empires.

But back on Earth the nanobots continued to convert and change their hosts, converting both plants and animal to an ecosystem or entirely make of metal.  Over time this planet was forgotten about and the stories of a planet with an entire metal ecosystem were passed off as myths.

After the ecosystem was perfectly balanced, the nanobots became dormant and the planet started to thrive  animals living on the planet are in many ways just like normal animals; they need to eat, sleep, rid themselves of excrement, they reproduce and even have DNA; they are alive in every way. But they are different in that all their cells are nanobots. Another difference is that they have an energy reactor powering the animal. Most animals have both an exoskeleton in addition to an inner skeleton.

The sapient life of the planet, (which I have not come up with a name for as of yet) look like humans with some differences; they, like many animals of the planet, have an exoskeleton in addition to their inner skeleton, they have a pouch similar to that of marsupials and their reactor is in the center of their chest.   They are bioluminescent and though their reactor is too far deep under the skin for its light to be seen all the time.

Their  energy also acts as adrenalin, when they are active, light emits from in between their exoskeleton giving them a “charged up” look. The more adrenalin they use the brighter they get. When they are using lots of energy the light from their reactor is also visible.

Technologically they are very primitive despite their bodies being made up of entirely of technology. This is mainly due to the fact that they don’t really need really advanced tools.  They don’t need to make vehicles for faster travel; most of the beast they ride are just as fast as most cars or speeders.  They don’t need to make weapons of war because blades will work just fine since they are immune to most blasters and there are creatures that are bigger, stronger, faster, and has more firepower than most tanks. They don’t need to make farms, their world is so fertile that they’ve never needed to grow crops, though they do herd come animals. Their planet is so perfectly suited to their needs that they have never needed to advance.  They have stayed the same for thousands of years and the galactic community has just started to find out about them.

Sorry for that wall of text, I kind of told you everything.  There is actually a folder in my gallery with all the stuff associated with it .  It’s not really filled out at the moment and actually I need to redesign some of the stuff in there.

I still haven’t come up with a name for the people or the planet, at the moment I’m just calling the planet “the Mechanical Planet”. Hope you liked it and sorry for not replying earlier.

Well I just spent about an hour composing a really well written reply and for some reason the entire page crashes and I loose all of it.

I'll have to give you a condensed form of it cause I cant do it all over again.

Stand by.

Thank you.    I had been wanting to do something featuring machine life, since it's something that's very widespread in my Nexus project.
