Description
This is a piece of environment art for my project the String people.I wanted to paint where the seamstress lived and where people who couldn't wake up from dreaming might find themselves trapped and turned into string.

nice. wondering how that blue/red color scheme from the thumbnail would have turned out

Yeah I was really gonna go with that and maybe I still should have. But I wanted to practice believable light. I wan't to make impossible structures seem alive and real. Hmm I need to still use that colour scheme some time.

This is rad as shit. I love the intricate details of the intertwining parts! Did you use a 3D model to help out with that?

I made a 3D structure to add to my painting indeed! Its a work flow that really saves time and adds a clean professional look to structures.

Is this location partially destroyed, or being built, or is it meant to look sort of unfinished?

amazing, those "retroskycrapers" look like traps full of evil.
I also like how the structures dissolve under the force of something
very mysterious, very interesting!

Impressive and flawless !
If you don't mind...how many time for this artwork ?
Your other "quick doodles" on Artstation are really nice too !

Thanks!
I'd tell you the exact time but the timer got a bit mixed up. I think I did this over the duration of 14 hours I think?
That being said...I think I can do this a bit faster now that I am getting the hang of the work flow and there was also the fact I was taking my sweet time on this guy here since its personal work.

Welcome welcome ^^
I probably could not even go that far in the double time haha (but yeah my work is far from realism or semi realism).
But welp backgrounds/architecture have always been my (strong) weakness.
To be honest I'd never really practice on it...or years ago...
And I totally understand we can stay a little more time when a piece is close to our heart/feelings.
I try my best to not cross the 8 hours line on an artwork, but man this is very hard (especially when you have many characters...).
Usually need between 10 to 20 hours to do something looking (about) good...sure still very far from your awesome stuffs (or tons of other artists) haha

You know though I encourage you spending a long time on a piece to try and get it to the same level as some of the artists we all admire. My reasoning behind this is if you spend that time and achieve something close then you will have learned so much more than pushing yourself to go as fast as you can and stop when the time is up. Often for me to get a new technique i need to do it over and over in different ways to get the hang of it and rushing often leads to cracks in my understanding on how to do it.
I.E. it used to take me months to make a full 3D character or animate a short sequence in 3D But already I have gotten faster at it. Just from knowing the steps and after doing all that experimenting and failing back when i started I have learned so much more.
Keep working hard and study some light theory i think that will really bring your work to the next level. My fav book :colour and light by James gurney

Oh sure I hear you there...
There is also "contests" that can push you through your limits and usually things you'd never try or even think about doing.
On my 7 last contests, I've won 3 of them. Not all in 1st place sure, and only little contests but it was interesting and fun.
What's is more funny (or not) is that when I take too long doing a time consuming artwork...I have the feeling that much time I spend on it...more it feels "stiff".
(Sorry if I really can't say anything about 3D...I've tried for few weeks/months; but well nope).
Don't worry I always work hard...though more I work more sometimes I feel despair...
Thing is I really don't have much time for study anymore...
Anyways I already saw Jmaes Gurney books and will probably take some one day or another.
Thanks for the advices Travis-Anderson !

Does she live in that 'lantern' suite hanging precariously over the pit? Nice fantastical world to suite your characters~
