I bet the gophers shout "Whee!" each time they are swung around and if it's not mentioned with every swing, a gopher has flown off. There was a DM who required we mention our pet all the time unless we specifically left it somewhere in a statement. It was so players wouldn't get pets unless they were prepared, and so the pets were treated as a member of the party.
