I suppose the downside would be if you can't find anything for the shield to eat for to long then he will turn on you.

Ohh! You could also throw the mimic and it can be kind of like a familiar or just a chomping weapon on the enemy.

normal shields already are weapons, this one in the other hand appears to be a fighting companion in its own

I have a feeling that mimic is going to severely obese real soon.

Interesting use of a mimic, not sure it the best plan as it will try and eat you in your sleep.

My DM would make it so if I didn't remember to feed the shield every hour while having it equipped, it would eat me.

One I thought about making character of mage who breeds and sells mimics as anti-burglar system, but then I did read in D&D manual that they have minimum weight (*somewhere) over 100kg... and my idea for purse-mimic faded away...

Yeah I think they made that weight minimum rule so DMs wouldn't pull things like (the teacup is a mimic, the gold coins are all a swarm of mimics, that small rock you picked up is a mimic).
-but then they went and made minor animators defeating the whole point.

I think it's a good thought. And animated objects still are good for this But having few trained mimics in house is still good idea. Especially if a mimic acts as a slightly opened safe with shiny stuff inside, accidentally in view from the front door.

One of the unwritten rules of GMing: if a minor point in the Rulez over-rules a great bit, then there's an 'exception'

Note to self: remember that when you'll start to learn being GM.
For now, just a starting player.
