I suppose the downside would be if you can't find anything for the shield to eat for to long then he will turn on you.

My DM would make it so if I didn't remember to feed the shield every hour while having it equipped, it would eat me.

One I thought about making character of mage who breeds and sells mimics as anti-burglar system, but then I did read in D&D manual that they have minimum weight (*somewhere) over 100kg... and my idea for purse-mimic faded away...

Yeah I think they made that weight minimum rule so DMs wouldn't pull things like (the teacup is a mimic, the gold coins are all a swarm of mimics, that small rock you picked up is a mimic).
-but then they went and made minor animators defeating the whole point.

One of the unwritten rules of GMing: if a minor point in the Rulez over-rules a great bit, then there's an 'exception'
