Description Have you ever looked at the airbrushed perfection of the models, and lifestyle we are told to aspire to have in advertising posters. And then looked at the reality of the struggle around us.

The poster is for Peter Mark an expensive and posh chain of hair salons in Ireland.

I was walking down this street, when the man in the wheelchair came rolling up beside me. I kept walking beside him, until I saw the men at the bus stop. I stayed in the spot waited for him to go between the men and advert, raised the camera focused then shot. And put it away before anyone noticed me.

My aperture was set to 5.6 (DOF), and the film in it was Ilford hp5 400ISO, for good speed of moving shots.

This photo was taken on Georges street Dublin, in the last week of September.

Scanned from print 8x12.

Camera: Nikon EM
Film: Ilford hp5 400iso
Lens: 50mm, nikon series E.
Shutter speed: 250/1

Thanks a lot, although I think there were better ones in the contest. I'm proud of this as it was the third shot I ever took with B&W film.

There's a few places I do my printing, one is the Dublin camera club, also a friend of mine built a darkroom in his garden shed. Plus my dad has a Durst enlarger.

There nice small discreet cameras, I've covered it in black tape to blend in more to the crowd. Glad you like the shot.

covered in black tape? why? they're all standard black aren't they?

Treamus In reply to Kathumane [2006-10-19 15:56:20 +0000 UTC]

I cover the Nikon logo and any bits of white, to really make it look non descript. It looks really cheap and nasty with the tape. Actually alot street photographers cover there black rangfinders in tape just for that bit of extra invisiblity.

The man in the camera shop had some out of date Ilford hp5 400iso films lying around and he loaded it in the camera as a test roll. Although it was out of date by a year, the quality's still fine. I just passed by this same spot today it's funny it's only about four shops down from where I bought the camera.

Awesome shot. I've often seen things like this, and thought about the exact same thing, but never had the conditions right.

The three guys round the shot are perfect for this.

Also, if I tried to shoot this in Glasgow I'd probably be lynched.

You just reminded me of the elements that make for street photography: chance, spontaneity, perspective and a quick thinking and quick moving photographer.
