On he far side of the small town where I grew up, there used to be a Nike site.
Until the base was decommissioned I worried every night, but to this day I wonder if the Russians got the memo.

while researching the nike battery in rockaway (where i grew up) i made the acquaintance of a career soldier who served there in the late 1950s.Β we became good friends and i always enjoyed his stories about nyc, the army and ufos.Β he was a real character.Β sadly, he passed away last year.

That's why I like hearing old war stories, so I can keep them from fading away.

I grew up during the worst days of the Cold War.Β At around midnight, on TV, there'd be these gov't sponsored defense films, showing how America was being defended.Β The Nike Zeus was featured prominently, shooting down a target drone.Β

I had a model of this one years ago. The first Ajax battery was on Hart Island in the Bronx.
