BEGINNINGS 1999 - 2002
FREEWAY is another character whose first-icon I first committed to Microangelo™ entirely from memory during a lunch break at work. The result was questionable, though I did at least get some of the basics down. Shortly after, with slightly better references, I had him redone and I felt he turned out all right. The side panels of his helmet were a bit iffy, but overall, it was a painless job. Later, in 2002, I also improved on his expression by moving his mouth up a touch and adding a "chin dimple." I always thought I should one day extend the top of his helmet, though, as it still looked somewhat stunted compared to the lower half of his head.
SECOND WIND 2008 - 2009
The first attention to that detail came in 2008. There was very little TV series reference material of him in robot mode -- only a brief scene in THE REBIRTH showed him in some detail -- so I resorted to scanning a number of pages from the original comic book to provide visual aid. I began to like the avatar quite a bit when I went for him again in 2009, his hues far subtler and proportions much more representative than before. In the end, I feel I have given him enough of a TOEI-style appearance that he can probably stand as he now is.
