Description

THE AUTOBOT HIERARCHY
As of December 14, 2021

This is my idea of a military-style explanatory organizational Autobot chart. It includes every Autobot that made an appearance in the G1 cartoon series and I've done my best to find a logical spot for everyone. It's quite comprehensive, as the sheer number of extant Autobot characters would properly seem to demand. Most recently, my inter-character scaling finally seems to be falling into place, which needed to be reflected here as well. I'm also starting to understand better how light would affect these avatars if they were three-dimensional and have started to apply that insight to the shading. Some of the characters have been updated as such and more is to come.

ORGANIZATION

I've arranged characters within each division according to the general area of expertise they bring to the fold. The TACTICAL DIVISION subtitle, for example, hints at the sequence of abilities I like to sort them by. However, the need to fit everyone and keep certain sub-groupings natural does make for the odd exception.

CLARIFICATIONS

I've received some surprisingly critical remarks about the piece, so I want to enlighten visitors about the conditions I apply to my choice of arrangement and labeling. The primary condition: My work in general is based on the U.S. G1 continuity as shown in the original 1980s TV series. I usually consider any retroactive references added to later franchises, such as BEAST MACHINES and ROBOTS IN DISGUISE, beyond the purview of my output and consequently beside the point. If a BEAST MACHINES toy tech spec suggests the purpose of an obscure one-off G1 character was such and such, I disregard it because the original episode(s) didn't mention or display it. If an episode of ROBOTS IN DISGUISE says DION became ULTRA MAGNUS (a confirmed nod to a favourite fan theory incorporated into translated dialogue for an imported Japanese TV series, no less), I discount it because the original WAR DAWN episode ultimately left his fate unknown.

I've made a single exception to the rule, but I'll get to that a bit later.

Now, in rendering these avatars, I've relied upon the following three sources:

VISUAL REPRESENTATION: THE U.S. G1 TV SERIES (and a little bit of the comic book)

The TV series represents 95% of my visual references. In the few cases where a character's cartoon series representation is too limited to be used, I've drawn on THE TRANSFORMERS: UNIVERSE or appearances from the original comic book. I would've preferred all of my references to be intrinsic to the TV show, but I've accepted this source as the finalized character models were used for all of the G1 media permutations.

FUNCTIONS AND TITLES: THE TRANSFORMERS: UNIVERSE

THE TRANSFORMERS: UNIVERSE forms the basis of both the original comic book and TV series characters and the latter medium, though it tends to be less concretely stated, follows the functions and titles in the former. That's how I'm able to determine, for example, that TAILGATE is a scout and TANTRUM is a fueler.

FUNCTIONS AND TITLES: TOY TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

A time or two, a character was on the show but received no TRANSFORMERS: UNIVERSE profile. For their functions, I consulted their toy tech specs. That way, to name one, I could tell SWERVE was a metallurgist.

SINGULAR SERIES-ONLY CHARACTERS

So what of one-off characters that were neither made into toys nor featured in contemporaneous media?

Sometimes all there is to base functions on is the dialogue and action taking place in a character's episode. In some cases, obscure characters are mentioned and even enlarged upon in official latter-day media, but given my isolated frame of reference, I almost always ignore those backdated depictions, which are often made simply to appeal to fans with whom they originate. To reiterate my earlier point: If an IDW comic book were to claim that DEVCON used to be a Cybertronian mailman, it has no bearing on the way I choose to present the character, simply because it never came up in THE GAMBLER. But I've made one concession:

Because I like their look, I wanted to include the unnamed female Autobots from THE SEARCH FOR ALPHA TRION, but I hesitated because I didn't particularly want to use the names Jesse Wittenrich gave them for the 2010 FLAMES OF YESTERDAY online exclusive comic book. They're not bad, even if I don't see the "Auto-significance" of LANCER, but I was long adamant that I would only accept names made up by Beth Bornstein or others who worked on the original show. In the end, I decided to relent with these two and these two alone. I also accepted their functions as scientists, as they looked analytically involved with their Cybertron base. I did adjust one of their purposes to avoid duplication, but kept it in the realm of science.

Speaking of duplication: Some have also commented on the existence of both ARIEL and ELITA ONE in the chart, or both ORION PAX and OPTIMUS PRIME, to name a couple (or actually two couples). "Why are they both in there? They're the same character." I understand the question. But: They were very different types from one form to another and their old lives were "astro-years" apart from what they became. They were inconsequential entities with greatness in their futures. And it would be a waste not to show their designs!

Finally, the overview includes two "cheats" on my part. I've always felt the lack of robot modes for HAULER and SLAMMER. It just looks too odd having vehicular-mode avatars next to everyone else's proper face. So I decided to design heads for each of them and put them in there instead of their respective crane and tank modes.

I welcome anyone to disagree with my structuring and classification of the characters, but again, within the confines of the original 1980s U.S. G1 universe, this is as true an illustration as I can -- and will -- ever make.

That is all -- thank you!

Hi, kutekeg!

So glad you enjoy it -- both visually and intellectually.

There will be a new version of this sometime in the future, when all of these faces have once again been revamped (a work currently -- and seemingly forever! -- in progress), so I trust your enjoyment will not diminish as time goes by.

Thank you for taking the time to bring a smile to my face.

I would need to acquaint myself thoroughly with those series to do avatars of the characters, and even then, I would most likely do a separate piece.

It might sound a bit lazy, but I have a hard time getting into characters when I can't understand what they're saying, and that also affects my desire to recreate them in avatar form.

Definitely an interesting piece. There is two other characters you've got mislabeled though. Firestar's function is not "Transport". As with Inferno, her primary function is Search and Rescue. Also, Beta wasn't just a rebel warrior, she, along with Alpha Trion, was Leader of the rebellion against the Quints. She was equal to Alpha Trion.

Trecathlus In reply to Tramp-Graphics [2011-02-13 17:02:42 +0000 UTC]

Tramp-Graphics: Thanks for the input. In response, I thought of FIRESTAR's function as it related to the events of the one episode in which she appeared. However, there is the small exchange between her and INFERNO where he says he misses their common rescue missions, so I'll grant you that.

BETA is a different story, though. You say she's equal to A3, but FOREVER IS A LONG TIME COMING contains nothing to confirm that claim. It might be inferred, but inference is by definition interpretational. The only facts I can find in the episode are, for one, her reference to him as "our leader" -- and for another, strong female that she certainly is, when he finally returns from the future, she is clearly shown as a follower rather than in a shared role of leadership. Besides, if she were his equal, why would they so desperately need him?

Therefore, I feel I have not mislabeled BETA. But I will do something about FIRESTAR in a future revision of this poster.

Read Beta's TFWiki page: [link] as well as Beast Machines Deployer Rav's toy bio, which specifically makes reference to Beta:
A crafty and agile winged warrior who usually keeps to himself. When in battle, the small airborne spy packs a big time punch! He converts into an energon crossblow, whose power was given to him by an ancient female Autobot resistance leader for courage in battle. Rav can "fry" the main circuitry of an enemy's data bank with a blast of arrows while in energon crowssbow mode. When he's not scouring Cybertron for Vehicons, Rav enjoys "talking" with Nightscream via a complex series of musical tones.— [link]

It isn't speculation that Beta was a resistance leader. IT's canon. She was equal to Alpha Trion. She lead the combat forces into battle. We see her commanding the troops in the episode. She wasn't just a soldier, she was a commander, a leader. Thus you do have her mislabeled.

Trecathlus In reply to Tramp-Graphics [2011-02-14 10:35:35 +0000 UTC]

That is essentially a retcon, however "official" it might be.

As evidenced by my other works on dA, I base them solely on the G1 cartoon series. BETA cannot be positively confirmed as equal to A3 based on the original G1 output -- only in the (re)writings of a decade and a half hence for a different franchise. What a non-series BEAST MACHINES toy bio, which does not even mention BETA by name, says is of little consequence to me.

By the way, the TRANSFORMERS Wiki is maintained by fans, and the description "standing beside her partner A3 she would be a leader in the rebellion that freed Cybertron from its Quintesson masters" is fanciful conjecture -- probably informed by the toy bio.

Within the confines of the 1984-1987 series (specifically FOREVER IS A LONG TIME COMING), which, again, is the only source I use (possibly excepting the various late 1980s Japanese series, which also adhere to G1), she is not mislabeled.

I am not saying she was not a leader TYPE -- I think she was -- but without someone actually stating she was "co-leader" with A3, this status (apparently much desired for her among fans) cannot be claimed as factual. Like I said, I could buy her as a sub-commander, the one to turn to in lieu of their primary leader, but that is as far as the episode realistically allows interpretation without resorting to pure guesswork.

Therefore, prosaically and pragmatically, "Rebel Fighter" or "Resistance Fighter" is the only label she can receive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tramp-Graphics In reply to Trecathlus [2011-02-14 17:19:19 +0000 UTC]

It's not a retcon. The episode shows her as a leader. In fact, it was Beta who was leading the assault on the Quints. She was the one giving the orders. Alpha Trion was the "political" head and the "brains", coming up with the tech, and advising Beta. He's not a warrior chief, he's not a general. He's a thinker, not a fighter. It was Beta who was the military head leading the troops into battle. and the passage stating that she was "standing beside her partner, A3, she would be leader of the rebellion that freed Cybertron from it Quintesson masters" is not fanciful conjecture. It's canon fact established by the show and the script. Do you see any of the other "rebel fighters" snuggling up with A3 or standing beside him as an apparent equal in that episode? No. Only Beta does. She stands with him arm in arm. All of the other resistance fighters stand at a distance behind them, and take orders from them. You don't see any of the other rebels giving orders or coordinating troop movements. You do see Beta doing all of that and more. It doesn't need to be spelled out in words, "Beta is co-leader with A3". It's evident by her actions and her role in the events of the story. She wasn't just a warrior, she led the rebel armies on the front lines much like Optimus Prime does in modern times. That is not fanciful conjecture. It's fact.

To use an analogy from US Civil War history, A3 is akin to Abraham Lincoln, Beta is akin to his top general Ulysses S. Grant.

BM Rav's toy bio is based upon that episode and by Beta. It didn't need to mention her by name since anyone who knows G1 would catch the reference. IF Alpha Trion was the only "leader" in the rebellion against the Quints, then the copywriter wouldn't have been able to make that reference to Beta. The other thing that firmly establishes a connection to Beta is the fact that Rav turns into a crossbow, Beta's signature weapon. And, for the record, BW and BM are a direct continuation of G1. She is indeed mislabeled.

Hi, SorenTheRosengale--

He certainly did appear to have that function on the TV series, but his TRANSFORMERS: UNIVERSE profile, which I follow, states otherwise. I guess he's one of those soldiers with alternate skills, like SWINDLE, who was apparently able to effect repairs on GALVATRON in WEBWORLD.

I did mistakenly apply the "warrior" label to SWERVE, however, who is a metallurgist. That will be corrected when I update the poster with better versions of their faces.

Fair enough. It wouldn't be the first time 'bots have demonstrated conflicts between there their toy bios and their on screen appearences, or demonstrated secondary abilities, such as Sideswipe performing demolition duties with his pile drivers.

Oh, I don't mind your opinion.

I had the same debate with myself when I put this together, but decided on two things: 1) I thought I should denote the different functions they had filled and 2) I find their personalities to be rather disparate from who they became. Also, their designs are so vastly divergent I thought it a shame to leave them out. So there you have it.

Anyway, thanks -- glad you liked it!
