BEGINNINGS 1999 - 2001
WIDELOAD originally seemed a rendering challenge second only to ROLLBAR, but his fairly clear comic renditions and even a somewhat serviceable cartoon screen image -- even though I wish it had been animated by TOEI -- mean he has actually been the one least in need of updates. In the beginning, however, there were so many attempts I never even bothered to save that I have lost count. It took some skimping of details to complete the first version in 1999, but it was not completely terrible. Every detail has been present in subsequent attempts.
SECOND WIND 2008 - 2009
During this time, I started to move toward defeating the garishness of his colour scheme and see if I could make the combination of orange and red somehow look attractively distinct from each other. By 2009, I seemed to be making that work, but colouring could not quite carry him to satisfaction. WIDELOAD has been one of the toughest faces to feel like tackling over again, but if for no other reason, I had to do it to preserve his proper place in the overall Transfaormer scale. When I finally did go for what I believe will be the last time, I enjoyed trying to make him as handsome as possible without cheating his details. For a guy with a plated face and colours like these, I find him fairly worthy of the gallery now.
