I couldnt do backgrounds either. But like everything else hun, you gotta bite the bullet and just do it.
My problem with backgrounds before was wanting too much. Simplicity is the key here

Stars are EASY!
new layer. Set to Lum on Sai or screen everywhere else.
and loads of dots, with different sizes. small dots should be LOTS and light, big dots should be few.
