Description So, I took the test ages ago, but I went to renew my license the other week and it was WAY less terrible than getting my license in the first place. I mean, I'll go have to watch a dumb video next week to actually GET my license, but yeah. The police were so polite and helpful.

The test is dumb as all get out. Seriously. You do not have to be a good driver to pass, you just have to do what the proctor considers right. And it's different for each. Not to mention the condescension and disinterest that they showed us. UGH. I still get angry about it. And yet, as soon as I passed, oh suddenly I wasn't invisible to them anymore! I was WORTHY.

So yes. Either be from a country like New Zealand, or get REALLY REALLY lucky to pass. I passed on the first go. There were other people I took the test with who were on their 20th go.

On Wednesday I will post "The Japanese Driving test: how to fail" from my husband's horrible experience ^_^;;;

Enjoy!

No really possible in the country, sadly, not if you want to get anywhere in a timely manner ahah ^_^;; Bikes are pretty common, but useless in Typhoon season.

I'm glad that I've already decided I could never drive on the left side of the road. If I move to Japan, I'm just gonna rollerblade. cant ride a bike

Yay you did it! I didn't think were actually going to put a comic of it up at least not this soon. I would not have guessed the way you dressed would have mattered that much but I guess it makes sense.

Hehe, well, it came up since I went to get my DL renewed and it brought it all floooding back. I actually address the dressing thing elsewhere in the comments, if you scroll through them ^_^

Which begs the question, is getting a Japanese drivers license really worth it?

Only if you live where you need a car. If you live in the city, there's really no point.

Note to self, ask for a job in the city.

And people wonder why Asians are considered horrible drivers! The driving schools don't teach them shit!

TriaElf9 In reply to FengFuXi26 [2013-01-07 01:18:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, this wasn't a driving school, this was the place where you take the test. They do actually have driving schools, with lots of road driving, etc, but it costs about 2,000 dollars, and no matter what, you always pass the test at the end. I can't speak for the rest of Asia, but there are some awful drivers on the roads in Japan. Not all are bad, just a few terrible ones, much like other places (I'm looking at you, Chicago)

Holy cow, I'm in the middle of my online Driver's Ed course so this was really well-timed. I can specifically remember being told to end in the same lane while navigating the intersection though. That must be really confusing for you.

I've heard before that the Japanese driver's license test is a little weird, yeah. Congrats on passing though! That means you don't have to go back another 20 times and pay fees for each new try...

Yeah, I went through the course twice, and did the same thing both times, but he marked me off for one of the times ^_^;;;;;

Ah driving, I love being young enough that such things don't really bother me yet, however, give it a few months and it will.

why #1? seems very sexist...

TriaElf9 In reply to iruka11 [2013-01-06 13:49:46 +0000 UTC]

It's one part sexist and one part cultural. Girls typically dress, well, "girly" in Japan, and the best way to suck up to your proctor is to be as Japanese as possible. So, for girls, wear a skirt, be polite and modest, etc etc. But who knows if it does anything, as it turns out you really need the proctor to just be nice ^_^;;;
